The quality of the onsen and the atmosphere of the large bath are flawless. Located at a high altitude in Hakone, Ashinoyu is a wonderfully cool, quiet, and peaceful spot. However, as the staff members are mostly young, their finer movements lacked refinement—particularly walking heavily on the wooden floors. It felt Japanese on the surface, but lacked the true traditional spirit. On a positive note, having a chair provided near the room's window was very helpful.

This was our second 3-night stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the high-quality onsen in both the private and large baths.

Since the dining area was so close to our room, we could relax, read, and nap right up until mealtime. The food was excellent, especially the dried horse mackerel—I rediscovered how delicious it truly is. The staff, including the international team, were all very friendly and made us feel welcome.

This will definitely be our regular ryokan. Since we are away during the autumn and winter, we look forward to returning next April.

It is sad to see that the pricing and other aspects have changed to cater to foreign tourists.
Since I wanted to stay as affordably as possible, I waited for this plan to book.
It is my once-a-year reward trip.
I was able to reset in a clean, extraordinary space.

Since I did not encounter other guests in the large bath, I don't think it is necessary to go out of the way to choose a room with an onsen bath.

What impressed me the most at dinner this time was the Kamo eggplant dengaku.
It was delicious, and I ate it all, even the skin.
I hope to encounter this menu again someday.

It was nice that the room was different from last time and had a slightly different atmosphere.

I was able to enjoy the onsen by taking a private open-air onsen before dinner, the large onsen after dinner, and a private open-air onsen before breakfast.
The retro atmosphere of the large bath was wonderful.

As for the meals, you accommodated my dietary preferences, and I was able to eat delicious food until I was full. Thank you very much.

As this is a historic old ryokan, I was a bit skeptical about the facilities and such, but it had been renovated and exceeded my expectations.

Although my room only had a shower, I was lucky enough to have the large bath all to myself. There were many foreign guests, so perhaps some avoided the large bath due to differences in customs...

Right after returning home, I immediately made a repeat booking for September.

I booked a non-refundable reservation before realizing I was pregnant, and ended up being 5 months pregnant by the time of our stay.
Since it was my first time traveling while pregnant, I was a little anxious, but the staff welcomed us so warmly, and I am truly grateful!

Thank you so much for your extremely attentive hospitality, such as preparing a body pillow in our room, modifying my meals, and switching my tea to barley tea.
Upon check-out, we were even given an amulet for safe childbirth from Hakone Shrine, which left me deeply moved.

I travel to onsen all over Japan and stay about 40 nights a year, but even in comparison, the service and hospitality here were wonderful.
Alcohol was free in the lounge, but as someone who doesn't drink, it was a bit disappointing. Since the only cold non-alcoholic drinks were sweet juices, I ended up drinking water or putting ice in black tea to cool it down myself.
The onsen water is mildly alkaline, and I think it is one of the best onsen qualities in Hakone.

This is my second visit to this ryokan. My first visit was in February of this year, when I came with my older sister for the very first time. The hospitality, room, bath, and meals were all a perfect score in my book. In particular, the hot spring here is exceptional, filled with plenty of yunohana (mineral bath flowers). I truly think it is rare to find a hot spring of this high quality anywhere else. Because it was so wonderful, I returned this time to make sure my husband could experience it as well.

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by the same service staff member from our last visit. I was incredibly impressed that they remembered my previous stay with my sister, which gave a wonderful impression. The training of the employees is truly magnificent.

Although our room did not have a private hot spring this time, I personally prefer larger baths, so it was not a problem at all. It takes a short walk to get to the large public bath, but even that felt nice as it allowed us to fully savor the traditional atmosphere of Matsuzakaya Honten. The room and the entire facility were thoroughly cleaned down to every corner, allowing us to spend a highly pleasant time.

I was also completely satisfied with the meals and have nothing but praise, but what left a particularly strong impression on me was the opened and dried horse mackerel (Aji no Hiraki) served at breakfast. While it is a staple of a traditional Japanese ryokan breakfast, the one served here is uniquely different and exceptionally delicious. It is a wonderful thing that even a simple, non-flashy breakfast side dish is crafted so beautifully, making Matsuzakaya Honten an inn that truly makes me want to visit again.

Despite the heavy rain, the staff came out to welcome us. They even walked all the way to the parking lot and said, "Please use our umbrella." They were so kind and I was deeply moved.
Also, the check-in process in the lobby was wonderful. The welcome Japanese sweets and green tea were excellent.
The guidance to our room was also full of thoughtfulness, as they carried our suitcases and showed exceptional kindness at every single turn.
When we entered the room, we turned right down the hallway and found a tatami Japanese-style room. It was a bright room with large windows. While I was thinking to myself that this must be where they lay out the futons, they opened the sliding doors in the back. A bed appeared with a big impact. A candle art made of towels to celebrate the birthday was sparkling beautifully. I couldn't help but scream with joy. I was way too happy.
Furthermore, the dinner course meal was so voluminous that we could barely finish it. To my surprise, they made the leftover sea bream rice into rice balls and offered them to us, saying, "Please enjoy this as a midnight snack." I was astonished and so delighted.
From beginning to end, their thoughtfulness was truly wonderful.
The fact that we could utilize five different private rental onsen completely free of charge was also an incredibly generous and pleasant service. The quality was so exceptionally high that I even wondered if they were doing okay offering such premium service.
I have visited many hot spring resorts in Atami and Hakone before, but this inn has suddenly jumped to the absolute number one spot by a landslide. It is a warm, comforting inn that makes me feel like I absolutely want to visit again.

I was able to experience an extraordinary getaway in this historic building. The quality of the onsen was excellent; it relieved my stiffness and allowed me to sleep soundly. After staying for the first time last year, I was captivated by the hot springs with plenty of "yunohana" (mineral flowers), so I returned again this year. The hot springs are wonderful. However, it was a bit disappointing to find that the selection of drinks in the lounge and during dinner had decreased compared to last year, though I suppose it is unavoidable in this day and age. My friend and I agree this is peak luxury when it comes to Ryokans and vacations in general. Our stay was amazing from start to finish with the highest level of customer care and attention. From the onset we were greeted warmly with tea and selected our Yukata's. The facility is sprawling but not overwhelming with relaxing free spaces to read, relax, and enjoy plentiful drinks (alcoholic and non) as well as snacks. But you may not need any snacks as breakfast and dinner are incredibly filling and plentiful! Each meal is made and served with such care and beauty- everything was almost to pretty to eat! They were sensitive to any dietary restrictions and had options for adding on where needed. The Onsens (private and public) were so well maintained and so incredibly relaxing. The location is further from the touristy area so you're truly away from the fray to relax in a quiet environment. That being said, bus access was very easy and nearby are a few beautiful hikes. My only regret was not staying another night to get another dip in the Onsen and experience another incredible meal. Thank you to Matsuzakaya Honten for one of the best getaways I've ever had!

Just before my pregnancy, I was thinking it would be nice to take a trip as a couple for one last special memory, when I happened to see this ryokan on TV and immediately made a reservation online.
I had informed them about my pregnancy due to dietary considerations, and they kindly prepared a body pillow in the bedroom and cushions for seating at meals, which was very helpful and thoughtful.

Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious, featuring locally sourced ingredients and carefully designed with health in mind. The seasoning was kept minimal, allowing us to truly savor the natural flavors of each ingredient.

The onsen was, needless to say, exceptional. The temperature was perfect, and it felt so blissful that I used both the large public onsen and the private open-air onsen twice. It was also very convenient that bath towels were provided, so there was no need to bring them each time.

The building preserved its traditional charm while being beautifully maintained, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The greenery throughout the property was also a pleasant visual touch.

The staff provided wonderful service, making our stay very pleasant. The complimentary drinks were also excellent, and I was especially impressed by the milk served in the morning.

It was truly a memorable stay that made me want to return with my family once things settle down. Thank you very much for everything.

We visited during the cold season, and a warm kotatsu was prepared in the room, which was very appreciated. The room had a living area and a bedroom with twin beds, which were very large and comfortable. The refrigerator had several complimentary drinks, and there was a coffee maker, so simply spending time in the room was enjoyable.

The meals combined taste and elegance, and the dishes were carefully selected. We were satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. Inclusive drinks were also available, and juices were provided after using the onsen.

We also used the private onsen, and the large onsen was spacious, allowing us to spend a relaxing time.

The room only had a shower, but this was not inconvenient at all since we used the large onsen and open-air onsen. Even if the room had an open-air onsen, we might not have used it because the large onsen and private open-air onsen were so wonderful.

The staff, whether attending to meals or cleaning the inn, served with smiles and made us feel very comfortable. The foreign staff members were likely all highly skilled, speaking both Japanese and English fluently, which was impressive. The Japanese staff were mostly young, eager, and energetic, which was encouraging.

The next day was my husband’s birthday, which we had not mentioned to the inn, but they wrote “Happy Birthday” in chocolate on the dessert plate at the end of dinner. My husband was very happy.

As for the meals, it is a matter of personal taste, but I personally found them enjoyable even if not perfect. Thank you. We would like to visit again next winter.

I had a very satisfying stay. The special plan was reasonably priced, and I had no complaints. We were allowed to check in early, and check-out at 11:00 AM allowed us to relax in the lobby with the all-inclusive service. Although there is nothing around the hotel, we were able to enjoy ourselves comfortably inside.

I stayed here for the first time last year and was impressed that everything about this ryokan was the best I had ever experienced. Because of that, I returned after a year. The onsen, meals, room, and staff service were all excellent… or so I would like to say, but there was one minor issue, so I rated it four stars.

When I went to the large onsen at 5:30 AM, a sign said “Cleaning in progress,” so I returned to my room without checking the schedule. However, when I looked at the guide in the room, it said the bath was available from 5:00 AM. I called the front desk and learned that the sign had simply been left out by mistake. The extra trip up and down so early in the morning was a bit tough. Mistakes happen, but I sincerely hope the staff take pride in the inn and ensure this does not happen again.

Our Complete Ryokan Experience (Standard Plan) at Matsuzakaya Honten was absolutely flawless from start to finish. Every detail was thoughtfully curated and executed to perfection.
The kaiseki dinner was exceptional—beautifully presented, seasonal, and deeply satisfying, followed by an equally memorable traditional Japanese breakfast that balanced elegance and comfort. The private onsen experience was serene and luxurious, offering complete relaxation in a peaceful setting.

Since retiring, I’ve stayed at various places, but this was my first time at this ryokan. The cost performance was very satisfying. As the title says, I made my next reservation during this stay. The onsen quality was excellent, and the meals were delicious.

It would be better if the amenities were of slightly higher quality.

Although I booked directly through the ryokan’s website without using a travel agency, I did not receive a confirmation email, which was a bit disappointing. I hope this can be addressed in the future.

Everything from the meals, onsen, bedding, to the hospitality was excellent, and we were very satisfied.
My companion was also pleased, saying that the fatigue from summer had melted away.
The bus on the way there was quite crowded, so we were a bit worried about the return trip, but a staff member kindly informed us that the Izu Hakone Bus tends to be less crowded than the Hakone Tozan Bus, which allowed us to return comfortably.

I was satisfied with both the content and quantity of the meals, and appreciated the many local specialties offered.
Regarding drinks, I thought it would be nice to have some special options that lift the mood, such as sparkling wine.
Even if limited to one glass, having a special choice would be appreciated.
It would also be convenient if ice could be taken back to the room for drinks.
The onsen was good, but except for one spot in the large onsen, most areas were too hot to stay in for long, which was unfortunate.
Having small towels in addition to bath towels in the onsen area would be even more convenient.
If bath towels were placed within reach inside the bathroom, small towels might not be necessary.
I also felt a bit of stress when locking the room door, as it required moving the door back and forth slightly.
Given the excellent facilities overall, these small inconveniences were somewhat disappointing.

Due to transportation issues, we had to cancel our original travel plans and ended up staying here at the last minute. I had visited over 15 years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by how beautifully the place has been renovated.
The service was courteous, and the warm hospitality made for a very satisfying stay.
Although our room only had a shower, we were able to enjoy the large public onsen, so it was not an issue. The room itself was spacious enough.
