Matsuzakaya was fantastic. I stayed in the Akebono and it lived up to expectations. It had so many amenities and the staff were superb. I would highly recommend this Ryokan to everyone.

Just after the steep switchback hill familiar from the Hakone Ekiden ends, as you head toward the highest point of National Route 1, Ashinoyu appears to float at the very top, separated by clouds, in the Hakone Seven Onsens map from the Edo period.

Nowadays, it’s not inconvenient if you have a car, but from the moment I stepped into the inn at 3 PM until 11 AM the next day, I felt as if I were in a world above the clouds.

The building, facilities, furniture, rooms, meals, onsen, and hospitality—all of them—were never ostentatious, yet I could fully enjoy their supreme quality and relax completely.

Every onsen, filled with abundant yu-no-hana (mineral deposits from the spring), flowed continuously, and the meals were outstanding. I was impressed that authentic materials were used in every detail. The sake tasting set came in three tiers, and the premium class allowed me to taste three ultra-rare, top-grade sake varieties, which was extremely satisfying. This combination in a tasting set is truly on a level that seems impossible elsewhere.

Thanks to the special New Year sale, I was able to stay at this inn for the first time. Since it’s a utopia, I might never get the chance to go again—but I find myself gently lingering on the memory, wishing I could return.

As a suggestion, it would be nice if the website included a floor plan of the inn so that the room layout could be understood in advance.

Our stay was short but we loved every second of it. From the easy check in, to our comfortable stay, the wonderful onsen waters in our room… The dinner and breakfast were also amazing. The facilities were good too (loved the night time self serve bar!). The service, every person we interacted with was really nice and helpful. We really felt well treated in every aspect.

The toilet and living room were on the second floor, while the bed was on the first floor, so moving around at night was difficult.
Also, there was a staircase along the corridor next to the room, and early in the morning, I believe it was a staff member running up the stairs. The noise echoed into the room, waking me up and making it hard to fall back asleep.

Our stay at Matsuzakaya Honten was nothing short of extraordinary. The entire place feels like a hidden gem — a peaceful, magical escape from the city, wrapped in nature and tradition.

The meals were absolutely exquisite, showcasing incredible flavors and attention to detail. Each dish was a culinary delight. The onsens were equally amazing — soothing, serene, and the perfect way to unwind.

I also want to sincerely thank the staff for their kindness and care during a very special moment of our trip. While my proposal wasn’t fully understood, the effort and thoughtfulness were incredibly sweet and made the moment all the more memorable.

The comfort, service, and warm hospitality made this one of the most unique and heartwarming experiences we’ve ever had. I wholeheartedly recommend Matsuzakaya Honten to anyone looking for something truly special.

I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful onsen and delicious meals. This was my first stay at Akebono, but I didn’t use the second floor at all. However, having the bedroom and toilet on different floors was quite inconvenient.

we had a lovely one-night stay (too short... I'd recommend at least two nights). everything was great! we did pre-order some meal "add-ons" which was the only thing that was a bit off, as they really more than doubled the amount of food we were presented with (just too much food to eat). in reality, they should've been meal options, rather than "add-ons."
