A Gentle Onsen and Heartfelt Hospitality
The onsen was gentle as always. Among the many options in Hakone, I especially love the onsen at Matsuzakaya and the Odakyu Highland Hotel (which is currently under renovation). Dinner was a colorful menu that truly captured the essence of spring. I also sincerely appreciate the staff’s thoughtfulness in adjusting the meat portions for me and removing the onsen egg from my breakfast. Every staff member—both the new faces and the familiar ones—greeted me with a smile, making my stay very pleasant. I truly hope the unique hospitality of Matsuzakaya continues for years to come.

What people value when choosing a ryokan differs, but this place is excellent in every aspect, including the onsen quality, rooms, cuisine, and hospitality. I have stayed here several times, and each visit has always been filled with wonderful memories. The subtle fragrance of Shoyeido incense throughout the property is soothing from the moment you arrive. The onsen is rich, yet I have never experienced any discomfort from it, which means it suits my skin perfectly. They also accommodated my dietary dislikes by providing alternatives.

As I enjoy antiques, I also take pleasure in appreciating the space visually. With the onsen, the reading I had been saving, and the delicious meals, it became the perfect weekend retreat.
If I may add one request, it would be nice to see some variation in the breakfast. It is very delicious with plenty of local ingredients, though. The time and space at Matsuzakaya are truly a worthwhile investment. I will visit again to relax.

This time, we decided to stay to celebrate a birthday and to take a break after the New Year holidays.
We enjoyed the onsen, savored the meals, and were comforted by the staff, leaving the mountains feeling refreshed. We have already started planning our next visit.

We had a wonderful time in a beautiful building full of history. The meals were also very delicious. The historical aspects have been well preserved while incorporating modern renovations.

Many of the staff were not Japanese, but all spoke Japanese very well and were full of hospitality, which was impressive. The Japanese staff were, of course, excellent as well.

A minor disappointment was that there seemed to be two women who appeared to be the proprietors, but they gave the impression of “just being there.” Perhaps this is fine, but at other inns of a similar price range, we have had a bit more interaction with the proprietors. The baby bed was also not ideal.

Overall, however, we were very satisfied. We are glad we stayed at this inn.

I had the pleasure of staying at this amazing establishment. The breakfast and dinner was something I’ve never experienced and will never forget! The Kaiseki was fantastic and the service by Matsuda san and Yuki san (sorry might’ve misspelt) was exceptional and they were so attentive! The Onsen experience is something everyone should try here and it was so clean and th facilities were amazing. The room was spacious in the Tamakazura room and I really look forward to coming back in the future! Thank you!!

I was fully satisfied with my stay. Among ryokans in a similar price range, this one ranks at the top. The attentiveness of the staff made the stay very pleasant. Everything was of high quality, which I greatly appreciated. There are many stairs, so I hope to visit again while I am still able to move around comfortably.

This was me and my girlfriend's first time in Hakone and at Matsuzakaya Honten. It was amazing to say the least.

At the inn you feel incredibly taken care of and attended to. The customer service is amazing and they are there to ensure your questions are answered and needs are met.

Our only problem is that we weren't able to stay long enough!

When we first arrived we were greeted with warmth. The attendants thoroughly explained everything to us and showed us to our rooms. The rooms felt cozy, warm, and clean while maintaining the traditional charm that the inn is known for. You can feel the history of the place as you walk around the premise. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, giving you an idea of what a traditional Japanese meal is like. I have a fish allergy and emailed in advance to our booking, a bit worried that they might forget or that I would have to remind them. But upon sitting down they already knew and catered a specific menu that didn't vary to far from the original menus that would include fish. The onsens were amazing - both private ensuite and the onsen you can book for private use.

Getting to the inn is quite straight forward, taking a bus from the station and then a short walk. You feel truly secluded and away from everything.

Would definitely come back!

Stayed here for two nights and it was absolutely fantastic. Staff attended to any and all needs, and were incredibly friendly throughout the visit. Bus from Odawara readily available and easily accessible. Private onsen was very nice and also readily available. Dinner's and breakfasts were highlights of the trip - traditional and delicious. We will absolutely be coming back.

I stayed here for one night over the weekend. The facility, with its nostalgic atmosphere, has a wonderful onsen with great water quality, delicious meals served in perfect portions with thoughtful presentation, and calm and composed service during check-in/check-out and meal service.
The snowfall early the day after my stay added to the charm, and I was able to relax and forget the stresses of daily life.
Due to snow causing disruptions to transportation, I requested a late check-out and was able to relax in the lounge until the taxi arrived. It became a lovely memory.
However, there was one point of concern regarding the private onsen. Used towels, presumably left by the previous guest, were left on the washbasin, and there were no towels provided for us. When I called to request fresh towels, they were handed to me by knocking on the door while I was in the onsen, which I found quite disruptive. This raised doubts about whether proper management was in place.
Aside from this, everything else was really good, and it was a wonderful stay. If this issue is addressed, I would definitely love to return.

Since my birthday was near, I received warm hospitality from all the staff.
I was able to relax and heal from my daily fatigue in the bath, refresh my body with the meal, and spend peaceful time.
On the way home, we talked about "When should we come again?"
