We couldn't recommend this place enough to people who are looking for a relaxing time in the mountains. The accommodation was amazing. From the room to the employees, they provided a great experience that was a highlight to our 2-week trip in Japan. If we had the time, we would have stayed longer here to enjoy the ryokan more and the town. Highly recommend!

After finding a great deal during my stay in January, I made a reservation for March. Above all, the onsen is excellent. I have visited many hot springs, but being able to enjoy free-flowing onsen in the large public onsen, private onsen, and in-room onsen is truly satisfying.

Each room has its own unique atmosphere, and it is also enjoyable to choose which room to stay in next time. The all-inclusive drinks are a great benefit for those who enjoy alcohol, though I felt that a wider selection would be even better. Compared to other ryokan, the additional drinks available for order seemed a bit expensive.

Even so, overall I am very satisfied and would like to stay again.

The attentive and warm hospitality at Matsuzakaya allowed me to truly feel the essence of traditional Japanese hospitality. In short, this is a ryokan I would want to stay at again and again.

The rooms, onsen, and meals were excellent, and the gentle care throughout the stay made me feel refreshed both physically and mentally. Upon departure, the staff saw us off until we were out of sight, which reminded me of the graceful attentiveness taught by a master of ikebana.

I was deeply impressed by the dedication and sincerity of the staff. Thanks to Matsuzakaya, this trip to Hakone became a memorable and truly enjoyable experience. I am sincerely grateful and look forward to returning.

The onsen had plenty of water, and the unique spring quality felt almost like applying lotion. My skin became smooth and hydrated without needing soap. There was much more snow than expected, and the heavy snowfall in the morning completely covered the surroundings, creating an excellent atmosphere. Some areas were not cleared in time, but the staff worked hard.

Inside the room, only air conditioning was available, and there was no humidifier. I also felt that more historical information about the inn could be provided throughout the building. The architecture is traditionally Japanese, yet the hospitality felt similar to that of an overseas hotel.

A year later and I still think about my time at Matsuzakaya Honten often. From the moment I arrived the staff were so welcoming, warm, and professional, I truly felt like a royal. The space was beautiful, the onsen rejuvenating, and I had the most excellent breakfast and dinner courses with local and seasonal ingredients. If I ever return to Hakone I will not hesitate to stay with them again.

We chose Matsuzakaya Honten to celebrate my retirement, and the stay far exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we stepped into the building, the historic and elegant atmosphere combined with the warm hospitality of the staff made us feel completely at ease.

The open-air onsen in our room was exceptional, allowing us to enjoy the famous onsen at any time in complete privacy, which was a true luxury. Each dish was carefully prepared, pleasing both the eyes and the palate, creating a truly blissful experience.

We were also able to feel the excitement of the Hakone Ekiden, fully enjoying the unique atmosphere of Hakone. The farewell with “Have a good trip” made us think, “We will definitely return.” This was truly an outstanding ryokan.

I gifted an onsen trip for my mother’s birthday, and we were able to spend a very meaningful and heartwarming time. Dinner was prepared in a private room included in the package, offering a calm atmosphere reminiscent of dining in the room and a sense of special occasion, which we greatly enjoyed. For breakfast, we changed the setting to a Horigotatsu-style seat, allowing us to enjoy the morning sun while eating, creating a wonderful memory.

In recent years, many onsen inns have foreign staff, but this time we were assisted by experienced staff. My mother said, “Somehow, it feels very comforting.” Although I forgot their name, they were friendly, calm, and attentive, allowing us to spend the entire time in a relaxed atmosphere. We are deeply grateful.

One small request: For foreign guests, it would be helpful to provide more detailed instructions in multiple languages on how to use the onsen. We observed some situations that could inconvenience others, such as speaking loudly or entering the onsen with shoes. We would greatly appreciate your consideration.

The meals, onsen, guest room, and service were all excellent, allowing us to spend a wonderful time.

I was able to relax and refresh myself in the quiet and charming atmosphere, with furnishings that reflected a sense of history.
Many of the staff members were from overseas, but they were all very polite, seemed comfortable with Japanese, and left a great impression.

I thought the garden could have been even better with a bit more maintenance.
Also, since there are many stairs throughout the facility, I was a bit concerned that it might be difficult for elderly guests.

I stayed here for the first time in January this year and was so satisfied with the location, facilities, historic atmosphere, meals, and service. I wanted my family to experience all the wonderful aspects of this ryokan, so I brought them with me for a second stay. Just like the first time, I enjoyed not only the room, meals, and the natural onsen but also the exceptional hospitality and the thoughtful attention given to guests, which made my stay even more enjoyable. My family also loved it, and they were eager to return, which made me very happy as I planned this trip. We are not sure whether our next visit will be with the whole family or just as a couple, but we definitely plan to stay again. I look forward to that and will enjoy the anticipation day by day.

This is my second time staying here. The property is located in a nature-rich area, and the atmosphere of the building is very beautiful. It's my favorite ryokan in Hakone.
The food was delicious, including the additional dishes, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The staff was very kind and attentive, and their dedication was evident.
The onsen was, of course, wonderful, and even after checking out, my feet remained warm.
I was very satisfied with everything and was able to relax peacefully in the building, which has a warm wooden ambiance.

It was surprisingly a ryokan that gave me a sense of the Meiji era.
The room was very comfortable, and I was able to relax with the kotatsu. The private open-air onsen was also amazing.
One thing I noticed was that the light above the washbasin was directed upwards, so it was a bit inconvenient when applying makeup.

I would definitely love to stay again in the future.

My husband was looking for a traditional, historic ryokan, while I was hoping for a ryokan with great onsen. As food lovers, we also had high expectations for the quality of the meals. Since we were paying a reasonable amount, we also expected great service.

Matsuzakaya Honten exceeded all of our expectations. The dinner was absolutely delicious, and we were very satisfied. The onsen were wonderful, and the cleanliness and overall atmosphere of the space made it very pleasant.

We stayed 2 nights and loved the Matsuzakaya. The staff were gracious and lovely, the rooms were bigger and more inviting than we imagined and the onsite onsen, especially the private baths, were particularly welcome. The evening keiseki meals were remarkable and the servers were engaging as they explained each of the many courses the meals entailed. Greet place to reinvigorate while sampling traditional Japanese hospitality and etiquette.

Service was very good. Everyone was polite, friendly and warm. It was great they have a team of people who can speak both English and mandarin which was very helpful.
The dinner was surprising good. Free flow of alcohol drink at the dinner and also the lounge. There were 3 places at least for you to rest and relax around the onsen beside your room.
The room was very clean and modern. Amenities were great as well.
The only downside is that it’s far away from the main train but excellent service, amenities and food makes this onsen stay worthwhile.

It was our child's first stay and experience with an onsen. They seemed to have a great time playing at the children's festival, enjoying the juice, and having fun at the old-fashioned playground.
