Invite Good Fortune on Setsubun!

Ehomaki: The Lucky Sushi Roll of Japan

What is Ehomaki?

Ehomaki is a special, thick sushi roll traditionally eaten on Setsubun, the day before the start of spring in the traditional Japanese calendar (usually February 3rd). Eating Ehomaki is believed to bring good luck, business prosperity, and health for the coming year.

The Three Golden Rules of Eating Ehomaki

To ensure you catch the good luck, you must follow these unique rules!

1. Don't Cut It! Eat It Whole. Ehomaki must not be cut with a knife. Eating one whole, uncut roll symbolizes not cutting ties with good fortune or relationships.

 2. Face the Lucky Direction (Eho). You must face the specific "lucky direction" (Eho) for that year while eating. This direction changes annually based on the zodiac.

The Lucky Direction for 2026 is South-South-East slightly south! Once you start eating, focus on this direction and do not look away until you are finished.

Why 7 Ingredients?

Ehomaki typically contains seven different ingredients. This number is inspired by the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) in Japanese folklore. Rolling seven ingredients together symbolizes "rolling up Good Fortune".

Common Lucky Ingredients & Meanings:

  • Kanpyo (Dried Gourd): Longevity and strong bonds.
  • Shiitake Mushroom: Protection from harm.
  • Datemaki / Tamagoyaki (Omelet): Increasing financial luck (due to its golden color).
  • Eel (Unagi / Anago): Rising up and success in life.
  • Shrimp (Ebi): Longevity (its curved back represents old age).
  • Cucumber: Business prosperity (associated with the word for "nine profits").

Sakura Denbu (Pink Fish Floss): Symbolizing spring and celebration.
