Enjoy Fresh Seafood at a Historic Fishing Port

Discover Odawara Fishing Port near Hakone

Japan, a country surrounded by ocean, has long thrived on its connection to the sea. Just next to Hakone lies Odawara, a city with a rich history of fishing that continues to attract visitors in search of fresh seafood.

Odawara Fishing Port is the second largest in Kanagawa Prefecture in terms of catch volume. A wide variety of fish—such as sardines, bonito, horse mackerel, mackerel, and yellowtail—are landed and auctioned here.

The port faces Sagami Bay, a body of water known for its warm currents and sharply dropping sea floor. These features support an incredibly diverse ecosystem, with approximately one-third of all fish species found in Japan—around 1,300 types—inhabiting this area. It is recognized as one of Japan’s premier fishing grounds.

Many hotels in Hakone receive daily shipments of freshly caught fish from this port, delivering seasonal seafood straight from the ocean to travelers’ dining tables.

Around the fishing port, a variety of restaurants line the streets. Some of the most popular dishes include:

Sushi

Kaisen-don (seafood rice bowls featuring various fish)

Deep-fried horse mackerel (Aji-fry)

Hamayaki (grilled fish and shellfish cooked over open flame)

Access:

Just a 5-minute walk from Hayakawa Station on the JR Tokaido Line.
Tip:

Visit early, especially on weekends, as many restaurants draw long lines during lunch hours.
