Explore the Living Earth at Hakone’s Powerful Volcanic Crater

Owakudani: A Breathtaking Geosite Born from a Volcanic Eruption

Feel the pulse of the Earth at Owakudani

Hakone is known as a popular onsen destination, but among its many attractions lies a place where the power of the Earth can be felt directly—Owakudani. This otherworldly landscape, formed by a major volcanic eruption approximately 3,000 years ago, offers a truly unforgettable experience.

Billowing white volcanic steam rises from the rugged terrain, filling the air with the distinct scent of sulfur. Owakudani is actually the crater left behind by the eruption of Mount Hakone, and even today, volcanic gases continue to escape from the ground—proof that the Earth here is still very much alive. Because of its harsh, dramatic scenery, this area was once called "Jigokudani," or "Hell Valley."
On clear days, the powerful volcanic vents create a dramatic foreground to the majestic view of Mount Fuji—a stunning contrast between Earth’s raw force and serene beauty.

In April 2025, a new interactive observation area, “Chikyu no Tani” (Valley of the Earth), opened. This immersive facility features 360-degree panoramic views and a thrilling glass-floor deck, allowing visitors to feel the scale and energy of the living Earth beneath their feet.

Another must-try at Owakudani is the famous Kuro Tamago, or "black eggs," boiled in the sulfuric hot springs. The shells turn black due to a natural chemical reaction—and according to legend, eating one adds seven years to your life. It’s a unique and tasty souvenir paired with an unforgettable view.

How to Get There: A Scenic Journey Through the Mountains

Start from Hakone-Yumoto Station:

Hakone Tozan Train: Hakone-Yumoto → Gora (approx. 40 min)

Hakone Cable Car: Gora → Sounzan (approx. 10 min)
Hakone Ropeway: Sounzan → Owakudani (approx. 8 min)
The ropeway ride from Sounzan to Owakudani is a breathtaking aerial journey, gliding directly above steaming vents and sulfur fields—an unforgettable thrill high above the crater floor.

Travel Tip:

If traveling from Tokyo (Shinjuku), the Hakone Freepass is a great deal. It includes the Romancecar express train and unlimited use of Hakone’s transport network, including the ropeway and cable car.
