Discover the history and spirituality of Hakone Gora Onsen Daimonji-yaki

Hakone’s Illuminating Tradition: The Splendor of the Daimonji-yaki Festival

A Fiery Midsummer Tradition: Experiencing the Majestic Daimonji-yaki in Hakone

Every year on August 16th, the dark night sky over Hakone is dramatically illuminated by a giant fiery character, "大" (meaning "big" or "great"), carved into the side of the 924-meter-high Mt. Myojogatake. This is the Hakone Gora Onsen Daimonji-yaki, a magnificent midsummer tradition with over a century of history.

Preparations have already begun this June to bring this grand event to life.

Originally created in 1921 to entertain summer visitors, this event also holds a deep spiritual meaning as an Okuribi (bonfire to send off spirits). It is a sacred prayer for the peaceful rest of all souls, lighting up the mountains with gratitude and reverence. Preparations began early in June, with locals carefully gathering materials to ensure the grand fire burns bright.

Where is the best place to watch?

Hakone Gora Park

To fully appreciate the scale of the blazing "大" character and the spectacular fireworks that launch alongside it, the Gora Station area or the elevated Hakone Gora Park offer fantastic viewpoints.

Sounzan Station

For a panoramic vista facing the mountain directly, the terrace at Sounzan Station is highly recommended.

To enjoy this breathtaking event, staying at one of our nearby retreats—Kinnotake Tonosawa, Kinnotake Sengokuhara, or Kinnotake Saryo—provides the ultimate convenience.
