Sengokuhara Grassland Burning

Sengokuhara Grassland Burning – A Fiery Tradition in the Pampas Fields of Hakone

Each year in early spring, the Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields in Hakone are dramatically set ablaze in a centuries-old tradition known as the Yamayaki, or controlled grassland burning. Originally held in the mountains of Sengokuhara, this practice was moved to the pampas fields in 1989 to help control pests and encourage the healthy regrowth of native grasses.

Though it is not a tourist event, this awe-inspiring spectacle attracts many visitors hoping to witness it — as it happens only once a year. When the fire is lit, flames rush up the fields in a powerful wave of orange and red, consuming the dry grass and transforming the landscape within minutes. The intense contrast of fire against the spring sky is unforgettable.

Since the event is highly weather-dependent, dates may vary each year. For up-to-date information, it’s best to check the Hakone Town official website.

If your timing is right, don’t miss this rare chance to see the Sengokuhara grasslands come alive with fire — a living tradition that connects nature, heritage, and renewal.
