How to Bathe Safely in a Japanese Onsen: Yumomi & Kakeyu
Experiencing a traditional onsen is one of the highlights of visiting Japan—but understanding the correct way to enter and adjust to the hot onsen is important for both safety and comfort.
Regulating Onsen Temperature the Traditional Way
Japanese onsen water is naturally hot and rich in minerals. However, adding cold water to cool it down can reduce its therapeutic benefits. Instead, a traditional method called “Yumomi” is used. Yumomi involves using a bucket to stir the water before entering. This process gently lowers the temperature, helps soften the water, and also serves as a light warm-up for the body.
What is “Kakeyu”?
Before fully soaking in the bath, it's customary to practice “Kakeyu”—a traditional, health-conscious way of preparing your body for the hot water. Using a provided bucket or scoop, pour the onsen water over your body starting from the feet and hands, gradually working up to your torso and shoulders. Repeat this about ten times. This helps your body acclimate to the temperature and reduces the risk of dizziness, shock, or cardiovascular strain once you enter the bath.
Taking a moment to practice Yumomi and Kakeyu not only enhances your onsen experience—it also shows respect for Japanese bathing culture and helps you enjoy it more safely and mindfully.
