Chisuji Falls in Hakone

Chisuji Falls: A Light Summer Hike Through Nature in Hakone

A Refreshing Summer Walk in Hakone: Chisuji Falls

Even in Hakone—one of Japan’s most beloved summer retreats—the midday sun can be surprisingly intense. That’s why we recommend exploring the area in the cooler hours of the morning or evening, especially near water or shaded forest trails where nature offers a refreshing escape.

This time, we’re introducing Chisuji Falls, a hidden gem that’s easy to access and perfect for a light, scenic hike.

Surrounded by lush trees, this peaceful waterfall is just a 15-minute walk along a forest path. With a height of about 3 meters and a width of 20 meters, water flows gently down a moss-covered rock wall in thin, delicate streams—hence the name "Chisuji," which means "a thousand threads" in Japanese.

Among the many hiking spots in Hakone, Chisuji Falls stands out for being free, easy to reach, and suitable for casual walkers or those with limited time. A perfect addition to any trip itinerary. Especially in the early morning, before the sun climbs high, the sounds of birdsong and flowing water create a deeply relaxing, multi-sensory nature experience.

Access:

Chisuji Falls is about a 15-minute walk from the “Houraien” bus stop, which is served by bus lines H, U, and Z.

From Ashinoyu (the nearest stop to Matsuzakaya Honten), it takes approximately 6 stops or about 6 minutes by bus to reach Houraien.
