The Lone Cherry Tree—Hakone-en by Lake Ashi
A Century-Old Blossom: Hakone-en
The Lone Cherry Tree of Hakone-en
At the lakeside grounds of Hakone-en, you’ll find a truly iconic sight: a solitary, centuries-old cherry tree standing gracefully against the backdrop of Lake Ashi.

Known as the “Lone Cherry Tree by the Lake”, this majestic tree is over 100 years old, reaching 12 meters high with a broad, elegant canopy spanning 23 meters.

During full bloom, its shape is said to resemble Mt. Fuji, with petals cascading downward like soft pink slopes. The image is breathtaking — not only for its beauty but for its peaceful, almost reverent presence.
This unique tree is also a favorite photo spot, especially because the blossoms bloom all the way down to the base of the trunk. Visitors can capture rare, close-up views of the blossoms and take deeply memorable photos that feel both personal and timeless.
