In 1925, the villa of the Iwasaki family of Mitsubishi Zaibatsu was relocated. The name "Shunpu" is derived from "Shunpu-kan," a dojo opened behind the residence by Tesshu Yamaoka (1836-1888), a shogunate retainer in the late Edo and Meiji periods and one of the Three retainers from the Edo Period (1600 - 1868).
