The service was very attentive, and the food and environment were lovely. I also enjoyed a fabulous spa facial. I highly recommend this resort.

This was my first time visiting, as well as my very first day-trip onsen experience, and I was able to spend a truly wonderful time.

First of all, the solemn atmosphere of the exterior raised my expectations. Beyond the grand door was a refined space filled with a delightful fragrance.

During check-in, we enjoyed a delicious welcome drink and alcoholic beverage in the lounge with a scenic view, which got me excited for the wonderful space that lay ahead.

Entering the room felt like stepping into another world—a magnificent place unlike anything I had experienced before.

The room's open-air onsen, the large bed, and the spacious, comfortable sofa were all incredible.

Although we couldn't stay overnight due to time constraints, the 7-hour stay was thoroughly satisfying.

The multi-course dinner was also absolutely delicious.

If time permits, it was such a wonderful place that I would definitely love to stay overnight next time.

The staff were all very kind and attentive, providing the highest level of hospitality. Thank you so much.

My spouse and I stayed here together. For dinner, we could choose between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM, so we chose 7:30 PM.
Right after check-in, we used the gym. To be honest, I highly recommend the gym. It’s new, clean, and fully equipped with a solid range of machines. We brought our own workout clothes and shoes and really enjoyed it.
After washing off a light sweat in the bath, we had free beer and sparkling wine in the lounge before 5:00 PM while gazing at the bamboo forest.
Returning to our room, we took a relaxing soak in the room’s open-air onsen. After dozing off for a bit, it was time for dinner.
Dinner was a Japanese course with meticulous craftsmanship. The delicate, refined seasoning truly brought out the natural flavors of the ingredients and broth. There were plenty of dishes, and even as a hearty eater, I felt completely full. Drinks ordered at the dining venue are at hotel prices, so keeping them modest and enjoying the room's minibar instead offers great value.
The minibar had two medium bottles of beer, red and white wine, and sake—all completely free, which felt like a fantastic deal.
For breakfast, you choose between Japanese and Western options at check-in. As a couple, we ordered both. In conclusion, I recommend the Japanese breakfast. The Western option was delicious too, but the Japanese one felt more authentic to the ryokan experience.
Overall, the hospitality was attentive and provided a comfortable stay. Since young children cannot stay here, it is very quiet. The architecture and interior design are tasteful, matching the official website photos in the best way possible.
The only issue that concerned me was the ceiling around the lounge air conditioner, which had noticeable dark dirt along the vents and lacked a sense of cleanliness. I was also disappointed to see a few stains on the room walls. For these reasons, I gave 4 stars for facilities only.
There were many guests who seemed to be international travelers, and I feel confident recommending both our facilities, meals, and service as a proud representation of Japanese culture.
While it is not a budget accommodation, I felt it offered exceptional value for the experience provided.

Crossing the suspension bridge was exciting, and the entrance had a wonderful atmosphere. Parking was spacious and easy to use. The staff provided smart, friendly service with a comfortable distance. We also enjoyed the complimentary lounge drinks.

Dinner was beautiful and delicious, highlighting the true flavors of the ingredients. Breakfast (Japanese style) was equally great. The room's open-air onsen was relaxing with a great view, though voices from the neighboring onsen were a bit noisy at night. Overall, it is a great ryokan, and we would love to stay in a different room next time.

I booked this stay to celebrate an anniversary.
Through our email exchanges before our arrival, the staff accommodated our requests perfectly, allowing us to welcome the day of our stay with absolute peace of mind.

As we got off the bus and crossed the bridge, we found a wonderful entrance surrounded by bamboo. The moment the staff standing at the entrance spotted us, they rushed over to welcome us and carried our luggage. We sat on a comfortable sofa in the lobby, enjoyed our welcome drinks, and received a thorough explanation of the facilities during the check-in process. The room was spacious enough for the two of us and exceptionally clean. We also enjoyed our delicious meals in a relaxed atmosphere while looking at the scenery outside.

When we were enjoying the breeze on the sofa outside the lobby before dinner and after breakfast, the staff thoughtfully brought us the complimentary drinks menu, saying, "Would you like something to drink?" Although many of the staff members were from international backgrounds, I was deeply moved by how politely and wholeheartedly every single one of them strove to show us hospitality.

I had seen some other reviews mentioning that international guests were noisy or that the bath was disappointing. However, on the day we stayed, there were many overseas guests, yet everyone was quietly enjoying this wonderful inn. Furthermore, while the bathtub showed a slight sign of aging, such wear and tear over time is perfectly acceptable for natural wood, so I did not experience any discomfort at all.

For us, who simply wanted to do nothing and spend a relaxing time, this stay was well worth more than the amount we paid. My companion was also incredibly happy, saying it was the very first time they had stayed at a hotel where they felt absolutely no disappointments.

I stayed at this ryokan to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. We truly felt the warmth of the staff through various thoughtful touches, such as the lovely towel art in our room, the message plate after dinner, and the gift of incense.
The location was also excellent, being close to Hakone-Yumoto Station with a bus stop right nearby, which made it very convenient. Crossing the suspension bridge to enter the property added even more excitement to our arrival.
The staff responded to us with utmost politeness and care, allowing us to spend a deeply relaxing time.
For our accommodation, we chose the room "Tsuki" on the first floor because the bamboo scenery looked beautiful. The view from the open-air onsen was spectacular, and we were able to enjoy dipping in the hot spring multiple times.
We also utilized the private rental pool and the personal gym, and both facilities were exceptionally clean and wonderful, making our experience highly enjoyable.
Every single dish of the Kaiseki dinner course was delicious, satisfying both our eyes and palate. Furthermore, we had a delightful time chatting with the staff, who willingly took photos for us.
The sparkler fireworks after dinner also became a truly wonderful memory.
It was such a beautiful inn that we felt sad to check out. We would definitely love to stay here again. Thank you very much.

This ryokan is a place I had been wanting to visit for the past 3 or 4 years, and I was finally able to stay here the other day. The moment we crossed the Tonosawa Bridge and were welcomed by two staff members as the doors opened, I could immediately feel an out-of-the-ordinary experience. We enjoyed our welcome drinks and desserts in the lounge and were guided to our room, where we were deeply moved by the sense of luxury. There were also many wonderful surprises during our meals. We ordered the premium sake tasting for both of us and thoroughly enjoyed six different kinds of Japanese sake. A trainee staff member was in charge of our dining service, and thanks to their incredibly polite and attentive hospitality, we had a wonderful and enjoyable dinner time.
Since I want to experience this extraordinary getaway again, I would definitely love to stay here whenever I visit Hakone in the future.

This was sadly the definition of over promise and under deliver. As much as I want to support this hotel and staff I could never in good conscience recommend this hotel.

As other reviewers have noted, the staff seemed to fake hospitality. The rooms were pleasant but wood was old around the Onsen and was not equivalent to a $700/night room.

The premium beef dinner came with 8 small pieces of beef and 4 of those pieces we had to cook ourselves. Half the meal was fish and vegetables. The waiter didn't explain most of the meal. When the whole sweet fish arrived he basically just said to debone the fish with little explanation, which we've never done. We ordered the premium sake option which they forgot to give us and they made it challenging to get a refund even though they didn't serve us the alcohol, which I found kind of funny.

The in room massage was done on our beds, no less. The 2 massage therapists rolled around our bed until my wife eventually had enough and had to tell the therapists to leave. My male therapist was great, but her female barely put any pressure and was basically tickling my wife halfway through.

We spent almost $1800 for 2 nights. We left after the first night and went to Kyoto instead. Their cancelation policy states they will charge a cancelation fee of 80% of the price if canceled with 1 business day notice. They are refusing to refund anything for us after canceling our 2nd night.

It just felt like it was a fake nice hotel and I was ready to leave after our first dinner.

Two years ago, during our first stay, we loved the staff's hospitality, the free-flowing source onsen, and the delicious food. We tried to book again last year, but couldn't make it work due to facility maintenance. This year, there was availability, so this was our second stay.

The staff service remained wonderful and kind as always, which we were happy with. However, it was disappointing that the dinner didn't quite suit my mother and me, although breakfast was as delicious as ever.

What made this stay difficult was that we couldn't book a taxi. Every time we stay, we have a taxi reserved for the next day to take us with our luggage to the Venetian Glass Museum and then to Atami. However, due to the surge in inbound tourists, reservations were unavailable. The hotel staff kindly kept calling to try and make a booking for us until evening, but it was very difficult. Thinking how impossible it would be to board the bus right in front of the inn with my elderly mother and two bags, I spent hours searching for a taxi until late at night. I finally managed to secure a taxi for 12:00 PM the next day around midnight. It was a shame that we couldn't relax properly despite being at an onsen.

The kindness of the staff was our saving grace. Thank you so much!

Since I wanted to surprise him, I exchanged various emails with the staff beforehand, and I am truly grateful that they accommodated all of my requests perfectly. Even when we were running late for our dinner time, they responded flexibly and graciously. The room was also absolutely amazing.

However, it made me feel a bit sad that they forgot to serve us our welcome drinks during the check-in process. Still, everything else was so wonderful that it became a great memory.

It was an inn that made me think, "I want to stay here again." I didn't even want to check out. I will definitely come back to stay again.

When we arrived near the entrance, the staff was already waiting for us to guide us to the parking space, unload our luggage, and carry it all the way to our check-in seats. Their attention to detail and polite service were truly exceptional. The room was just the right, cozy size for the two of us, and we felt incredibly relaxed as the design and color scheme were completely to our liking. The hydrangeas visible from our private open-air bath were so beautiful, offering a unique charm that can only be experienced during this season. Both dinner and breakfast were served thoughtfully course by course, and every single dish utilizing abundant seasonal ingredients was delicate and absolutely delicious.

We even talked to each other about how we would love to visit this hotel in every season—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. We will definitely come back again. Thank you very much for this wonderful stay.

I stayed here to celebrate my husband's birthday.

At the time, I was about three months pregnant, and the staff showed so much care and consideration for my needs, including my meals, which allowed me to spend a very safe and comfortable time. Additionally, they even gifted us a safe childbirth amulet from Hakone Shrine, and their warm hospitality remains deeply impressed in my heart to this day.

Since then, I have overcome threatened premature labor and successfully gave birth to a healthy baby last summer. The consideration and encouragement we received during our stay are precious memories for us as a couple.

From the moment we crossed the breathtaking bridge onto the property to the moment we checked out, we received fantastic attention from the staff and truly felt like we'd been swept away to a place of solitude, peace, and incredible culinary experiences. Our room and private onsen were a lovely respite and we truly felt at one with nature while in the onsen overlooking the forest and serene waters. I first visited in 2025 and found myself back again in 2026. I'm already looking forward to our next visit back (hopefully in the next few years).

My partner and I both talk about Kinnotake being the highlight of our trip - one night is too short, but two nights were perfect. Would highly recommend slotting it in at the end of your Japan experience to maximize the relaxation value :)

The service has been amazing both times - I'm always impressed at how many languages are spoken between all of the staff. I believe I heard Japanese, English, Hindi, Cantonese, and more. It was very easy to converse in English instead of my very broken Japanese!

The Kaiseki meals are SO incredibly beautiful.

Overall, would absolutely not hesitate to stay here again. You won't regret it, just book it.

Highly recommend! Everything was wonderful. The staff was wonderful to deal with, extremely gracious and welcoming. The room was beautiful and we loved the onsen-bath in the room. The food was delicious. It was a wonderful and relaxing stay. They supplied the yukatas and it was very relaxing. It is a great place to step outside of the stress and relax in comfort.
Our special thanks to our waiter/greeter and our dinner waitress. When we got there, our greeter offered us drinks and a sweet while we did the paperwork. He was also our waiter the next morning. For dinner, we were seated in our own area and our waitress was wonderful. We did use our phones for translating and they did not mind. The staff was wonderful!

Everything was absolutely perfect during our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed everything! Every single person was so kind, and the environment of the hotel is very chill and slow-paced. The staff went above and beyond to make my partner's birthday so memorable. There was a cake towel decoration on the bed, and the birthday cake was the cherry on top. I am a returning guest. This time, I visited with my mother to celebrate her birthday. For my mother, who has difficulty with her legs, I requested a safe shower chair, and I also asked for various accommodations regarding her allergies and disliked ingredients. The staff responded promptly and graciously to all our requests, which moved us deeply. (The communication via email was also very polite and truly wonderful.) Additionally, it was our first time trying a late check-out, which allowed us to satisfy our stay even more. I strongly recommend the Kinnotake resort as a once in a life time experience. Coming from California, I wanted to visit the main cities but also absorb the lush greenery and slower pace in the peaceful mountain villages. The Kinnotake resort was absolutely beautiful from the spacious rooms and private onsen to the delicious food presented in the dining room. Additionally, they were graciously willing to modify their menu to support my food allergies. The staff were sincerely kind and warm and went out of their way to make you feel special. Not only were we greeted upon arrival but were waved off upon departure until we crossed the main bridge to catch our bus down to the train station. I truly hope that I am able to return someday but if not I wish that others can experience these special moments in time.

KINOTAKE TONOSAWA is excellent in every possible way. We stayed at many wonderful Ryokans and there were a few that “blew us away”… top notch. But after experiencing KINOTAKE TONOSAWA, my wife and I agree that this is the best Ryokan we ever experienced.

The “ATTENTION TO DETAIL ” from the staff: greeting upon arrival, communicating Check-In policy and assuring our comfort prior to Check-In, Check-In process smooth, informative and complete.
Makes it a point to know our schedule to always be one step ahead in anticipation of our needs/requests.

The ROOM… spacious, clean, beautifully design, view of the greenery and mountain side. Wonderful large Hinoki (Cypress) Open-Air-Bath overlooking the mountain side. Round Fire Pit to enjoy and relax around.
Overwhelming amount of amenities: refrigerator stock with beverages (all free, restocked daily), towels/toiletries, more than you can use in one day and Nespresso Coffee machine.

BREAKFAST and DINNER… Breakfast selection of Western or Japanese meal. Each type of meal is fully thought of and meticulously prepared. Presentation is superb. Taste can only be described as “OISHI” “delicious “. Kaiseki Dinner was great. “ADD ONs” of speciality items takes the set Kaiseki dinner to another level: Awabi (Abalone), wagyu beef, etc.

MUST EXPERIENCE… TEPPANYAKI ZEN. The atmosphere, presentation, taste, quality and quantity
“Excellent”.

ACTIVITIES and SITES… Lots of places to experience. Lots of shops and food places.

We stayed here for one night in between Tokyo and Osaka and were not disappointed. An excellent calm and peaceful setting, with a modern twist on a traditional ryokan. The staff were very pleasant, courteous and professional. The Kaiseki dinner was excellent, especially the steak sushi! The room was very spacious and having a private onsen on your balcony was a great touch. All in all, we were more than satisfied with our stay and experience and if ever we return to the area, we will be sure to stay here again. Highly recommend.

The food taste was not good as it used to be.
Everything was too salty . And food was old style Japanese food. All marinated and pre cooked. You used to have fresh mild food before which made me go to you all the time.
The smell of the restaurant was so terrible I lost my appetite . The tepanyaki style of beef makes the greasy smell linger all day long even in the morning and to the hall. You should open the windows.

Our honeymoon at Kinnotake Tonosawa was incredible. The room and facilities were beautiful and the staff was so lovely! We cannot recommend this hotel enough. Our journey with GB began with the celebration of my 70th birthday. Four months prior to the occasion, my wife and I were driving through Hakone and happened to discuss my upcoming birthday. My wife suggested GB, so I decided to be a bit bold and stop by just to take a look.

The person greeting guests outside was very pleasant and kindly showed us around the interior. The stunning entrance, the lobby, and the wonderful hospitality of the staff impressed me so much that I decided on the spot. Since then, we have visited every year. Any small points of concern I may have had are improved with every visit. I can feel the staff’s friendliness deepening in a truly positive way.

The facilities, the cuisine, the hospitality (including their language skills), and the natural scenery are all exceptional. Personally, the view of the Hakone Tozan Railway, the iron bridge, and the valley from the bridge on the grounds is the absolute best. You can even see the railway's switchback from the lobby. It is no wonder this place is so popular with international travelers!

I am looking forward to seeing you all next year!

We stayed here to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Over the past 20 years, we have visited the Sengokuhara location four or five times. Since we wanted to travel by train this time, we decided to visit Tonosawa for its convenient access from Yumoto.

The bright architecture and hospitality were different from Sengokuhara, and we truly enjoyed ourselves. Being able to receive spa treatments together as a couple was a wonderful memory—I was so relaxed that I fell asleep halfway through.

One slightly disappointing point was that the food did not leave as strong an impression as our previous experiences at Sengokuhara. However, the staff’s bright and fresh energy was lovely. We were also very touched when the staff, upon learning it was our 20th anniversary during conversation, prepared a congratulatory message in chocolate on our dessert plate.

The proximity to Yumoto is very convenient, and it is a place we would like to visit again. It is just a shame that we cannot visit easily as a family because our child is still in elementary school and there are age restrictions.

We had an incredible time here on our travels through Japan. I would highly recommend the facility in general for their hospitality and quality of their rooms. Although the dinner was good, I would be cautious in booking the wagyu beef lover dinner as the dishes mainly focused on seafood instead of beef. Other than the dinner, the overall experience was exceptional and would highly recommend.

Every experience was excellent: a warm, personalized check-in; a very spacious room with a large terrace and a hot open air bath overlooking a bamboo forest; nice amenities; exceptional breakfasts and dinners; extremely friendly, courteous and attentive staff. The location was secluded, but still near bus stops. We used Uber for our trip to the Hakone Open Air museum, which was very easy. Highly recommend Kinnotake Tonosawa resort.

We stayed at the Kinnotake Resort for two nights during our two week honeymoon across Japan and it was absolutely a highlight of our trip. The room was incredible, the staff was so helpful and kind and all the meals were truly events we'll never forget. We had some of the best bites of our trip here. And our time soaking in the beautiful onsen was one of the most relaxing moments I have ever experienced. From the moment you step on the property to the moment you leave, you'll be well cared for here.

The drive to this hotel is worth staying here, you cross the most magical small bridge, neighboring the train tracks above a a narrow creek. The staff are waiting outside to greet you and assist you with your luggage. The rooms are magic, private hot springs onsen and every amenity you could want, facemasks, kimonos to wear to meals, robes, slippers. Etc.

My only negative is the dinner was a bit more ok the traditional seafood than we personally prefer, but perhaps that is out US preferences. The Western breakfast was terrific.

Although the staff were very nice and tried hard, the experience just wasn’t what we expected given the price and what we found at other similarly priced properties around Japan. The property is clearly targeted to westerners who want what they imagine the Japanese experience to be (but it felt off compared to the multiple other properties we had stayed at prior). The food taste and quality was below what would be expected for the price of the room. The fact that the pool and sauna cost an extra price per person to use is odd. The room lighting does not make any sense, so it is very hard to use the rooms for anything other than sleeping, yet there are few amenities on the property itself. It would be nice to be given a better explanation of how to access public transit from the property, given its location. Overall, we used the room as a place to sleep and spent as much time away from the property as possible. The food could be skipped - though the on site teppanyaki restaurant was worth the upgrade (while still obviously targeted at westerners, the food quality and taste were far superior to the dining included with the room).

Hello
from the moment the private car picked us up from the Odawara train station I knew our stay was going to be magical. The kinnotake resort staff met us outside of the door with warm scented hand towels. During our check in process the staff had us sit near a floor to ceiling window viewing the bamboo trees while they explained the layout of resort and all its amenities. The hospitality was 5 plus. The room was huge modern and clean with a picturesque view and the beds were very comfortable. The onsen was wonderful as we used it every night particularly after a day hiking and viewing Mt fuji. Now last but not least, the food was exceptional. I have not had better food at any resort we have stayed and we have traveled to Italy, Africa and Hawaii and more. If you are contemplating western breakfast or Japanese breakfast get the japanese breakfast you can thank me later. Outstanding 5 stars

I visited 3–4 years ago and it was a wonderful inn, so I made a reservation to return for my partner’s birthday.

The room and the food were still wonderful as before,
but the moment we entered the room, we noticed a moldy smell.
Since it was a special day, we tried to overlook it, but it was overwhelming.

Mold was present throughout the building and gave off an unpleasant odor.
It was visible to the eye.
We paid to use the private sauna, but the shower area smelled strongly of mold and the drains were clogged with waste.
At the bar, there was a glass-enclosed wine cellar, but all the wine was covered in white mold. I thought some might be vintage, but they were all young wines, which was surprising. Around the corks, there was also blue mold. As a sommelier myself, I have never seen a wine cellar in such a condition.

Both my partner and I have mild mold allergies.
We ran the air purifier at maximum and opened the windows for ventilation, but our eyes itched, our noses were congested, and it was very uncomfortable. Sleeping at night was difficult.
As someone who chose this inn, I felt very sorry for the situation.

Because the room, onsen, food, and service are so excellent, it was especially disappointing.
Even though we stayed on a special plan, the experience was so uncomfortable that it almost didn’t feel worth the cost.
Considering the price, more attention should be paid to hygiene.

Overall, I was very satisfied. The amenities were well provided, and I was happy that even the haori was cleaned. I often stay at various luxury inns as a hobby, and I found the items and facilities here very clean and well-maintained.

Personally, I would have liked a samue. While it may go against the inn’s concept, I would also have appreciated a trash bin in the room. The meals were delicious and the portions just right. I ordered the Western breakfast, which was comparable to a café in town, but I would have liked some fruit for dessert. Perhaps the Japanese breakfast would have been better.

That said, this ryokan has become one of the places I would like to revisit. Thank you.

I was able to take a day off from work, so I wanted to relax in an onsen and stayed for one night.
We stayed in the “Ten” room, and the atmosphere of the room was very lovely. The amenities, the inclusive items in the refrigerator, the welcome drinks, and the sweets such as strawberries and cheesecake were all delightful.

It was heavy snow on the day of our stay, making travel difficult, but the view from the open-air onsen was truly beautiful and impressive. We also ordered additional dishes of abalone and spiny lobster, making the meal even more luxurious, and everything was delicious.

The staff were kind and attentive, and we were able to enjoy a luxurious and relaxing time. Thank you very much.

We had planned our trip to Hakone for several months, and it was very satisfying.
With a small number of rooms, the inn was quiet and comfortable, even during meals. The room itself was spacious and allowed us to relax comfortably.

What a disappointing end to a phenomenal trip to Japan. We stayed at this hotel for one night, and chose it based on the fact that they have great reviews, serve Wagyu, have a gym, and have a private onsen in each room.

For almost $1k USD per night, we leave feeling ripped off. First: the food. The food was just not good. We paid an extra 33k yen to upgrade to a Wagyu lovers menu. 70% of the menu was seafood, with a few small beef dishes sprinkled in. The main course was only 40g (!) Wagyu each that we had to cook ourselves. The meat was chewy and you could find a better quality from a street vendor. Second: the service. The staff are junior, not helpful, and not welcoming. The service at both dinner and breakfast was deplorable. At dinner, they dropped off dishes like they were from a sushi conveyor belt without any description of the food. They looked at our empty glasses without asking if we wanted any refills. During breakfast, they served the first course before our drinks arrived. They never asked if we wanted coffee and seemed inconvenienced when we asked. They served the egg course at the same time as the prior course and so our eggs were cold by the time we started eating them. It felt like a tasting menu setup with airplane food (and actually worse than airplane service). Third: the tacky upcharges. As other reviews mentioned, they miss no opportunity to try to upsell you. There were laminated cards on dinner tables advertising ice cream and water for extra charge. You received free Peroni and cheap Prosecco, but then the cheapest glass of wine at dinner was $30 USD (and not good wine at that).

I struggle writing a negative review but do so in hopes to save others from making the same mistake we did. The two positives I would highlight is that the private onsen is great and the location is beautiful. But you can find the same at another hotel that is likely cheaper and with level of luxury that is matching the price.

We had a fantastic experience at Kinnotake Tonnosawa! The atmosphere was very special, and the team were extremely kind and friendly, always gentle and helpful. The kaiseki dining experience was wonderful, and we really appreciated how kind the dining team was.
There is only one minor point that I would mention: I would have expected the use of the sauna and pool to be included in the total cost.
Other than that, the overall experience was really nice!

We stayed here over the New Year period. All of the staff were very polite and attentive. The meals were delicious. The breakfast, which included New Year’s soba and osechi-style dishes, gave a special feeling for the year-end. Even though we stayed for two nights, the menu was properly changed each day. The only disappointment was that the large public onsen was removed, as we were looking forward to the onsen. It has been replaced with a gym, pool, and sauna.

My wife and I took a belated honeymoon to Japan; I booked Kinnotake Tonosawa, hoping for a relaxing ryokan experience and a nice onsen soak. I got more than I could have hoped for. From the moment we were walking up the short road to the hotel, a staff members was coming down to welcome us and carry our bags. We were welcomed with coffee, tea, treats, and a very attentive and welcoming staff. We were allowed to check in a bit early for a small fee.

The room was huge and well supplied with amenities. The onsen was already full and piping hot. Yukatas and getas were available, as well as complementary socks. For our dinner, we were driven a short distance and walked into the restaurant, where we had a private teppanyaki chef who prepared a delicious meal.

We had only planned for one night; my only regret is not staying longer. I have never been more relaxed; every staff member was pleasant, kind, and caring. I simply can not recommend this ryokan enough.

We booked the place without any expectation as it was both our first time at a ryokan. When we arrived, the staff was there to receive us, throughout the stay, the staff was very warm and friendly and will do their best to accommodate you. This place really let's you relax.

If I have to really nitpick then it would be that its weird seeing how they provided water kettle and tea leaves but there's only glass in the room( which doesn't seem to be able to be used for hot water). So maybe it'll be better to provide some mugs.

The staff are super friendly and helpful, getting a taxi to train stations can be organized in advance, options for both western and Japanese breakfast plus beautiful scenery. My stay at Kinnotake Tonosawa was truly wonderful. The staff were very friendly and always willing to help. I enjoyed an amazing massage at Moon SPA, and the food at the Teppanyaki Zen restaurant was delicious. The bartender at Bar Bamboo was also very kind and made the experience even nicer. The private onsen was perfect and helped me relax completely. Overall, I had a peaceful, relaxing stay, and I loved every moment.

Everything was absolutely sublime. The rooms, the onsen, the staff and the spa are the best. Rooms were spacious and beautiful with all the amenities we needed plus they have their own original nuts which were absolutely delicious. The private onsen with the view is one of the most relaxing things I've ever done on my life. The staff, always polite, always there to help us with anything that we needed. Finally, the spa, I was sent to another dimension; I didn't know it could be this good. It's definitely a must try for anyone visiting this hotel; it feels like you're being massaged by the divine. It was nice to have a space where we could relax with an all-you-can-drink option. The bar also had a great atmosphere.

Sauna & Pool
I did not use the pool, but the quality of the sauna was sufficient for a small private sauna, and I was satisfied. When moving from the changing room to the sauna, it was visible from the gym, so it would be better if this could be improved so that visitors do not have to worry about what to wear or while returning. There were no people using the gym at the time, but it would be preferable if it were not visible.

Customer Service
All staff were polite and provided excellent service. It was also nice that they placed our luggage first without guiding us to the room immediately, allowing us to move at our own pace without feeling pressured.

The stay was impressive. We loved the open air bathtub with a view of the pond. It was super relaxing. Some people mentioned it was difficult to get from the hotel, but the bus stop is right in front of the property. Also use GoTaxi if you don’t want to take the bus. The food was sublime, and the service was immaculate. We had a wonderful time. My only note is I wish the gym had water and towels.

This was a long-cherished inn for me.
The entire property is filled with the scent of incense, and the lighting is gentle, creating a very relaxing atmosphere.
The Haruka room is quiet, and I could not hear any traffic noise. In the open-air onsen, I could enjoy the beautiful scenery and the sound of birds while bathing.
Both dinner and breakfast were simply exquisite. Seasonal ingredients are used, and the number of dishes is more than sufficient. The staff also greeted me with smiles and attentive eye contact, which moved me deeply. I would love to stay here again.

I stayed 1 night with my friend during our trip to Japan, and it was a much needed for relaxation! The private onsen made it convenient to use whenever you want to, and the bamboo forest surrounding the establishment was very pretty. It was raining as we were arriving, so the employees ran out with umbrellas and to help us with our luggages. It was a nice, warm welcome, especially since we had been traveling all morning! We had the welcome desserts and drinks as we checked in, and the rest of the evening was great. The dinner and breakfast were both delicious, and the servers/staff are very attentive and ensured we had a good experience. They also sort out anything you need for transport away from the ryokan, but we ended up taking the bus, since the stop is right outside the resort. The room was so comfortable, clean, and we enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend!

Honestly was expecting more. Lovely accomodation however some parts werent really thought out properly in terms of design. If this is a modern interpretation of a classic ryokan, certainly several places could have been better especially the smaller details.

Room wise was great, big and spaceous however bath water pressure was bad. Onsen water temp was slightly warm.

Food wise is just bad. Its edible. But definitely not representative of what the best japan have to offer. Restaurant area could do some upgrade in terms of thoughtfulness in terms of design.

Can’t say enough about this hotel. Hidden up in the hillside a short bus ride away from Hakone station. The welcome was nice the hotel is nice and the private onsen was perfect. This is a place you can get away from the concrete jungles and unwind. I’d definitely recommend reserving the spa for an hour too. Staff was friendly and made the stay even more pleasurable.

The perfect place to get away from the crowds and the noise of the big cities for a few days, I would recommend the place to anyone. From the moment we left the inn, we already missed Kinnotake Tonosawa, and my husband and I kept saying to each other, “We want to come back.” That’s how wonderful the experience was for us.

After getting off the bus and crossing the suspension bridge exclusive to guests, our excitement couldn’t be contained.
Before check-in, we were welcomed with drinks and sweets in the lovely lobby, which already made the experience feel special.

There are two main things that stood out most in our memories of this trip.
First, the beautiful room and the open-air onsen.
We’ve stayed at other inns with private open-air onsen before, but the view of the bamboo forest, the sounds, the scent, and the entire atmosphere here made it truly relaxing.

Second, the smiles of the staff.
Every staff member we interacted with was kind and full of hospitality. Even those we didn’t speak with directly greeted us warmly, which made our entire stay incredibly pleasant.

This was our last trip as a couple before the birth of our child, and it became a truly unforgettable memory.
While it may be difficult to visit again with a baby, we hope to make the time to return someday.
It was our best memory of the year.

The other day, I stayed with my daughter.
The room was spacious and clean, and being able to enjoy the open-air onsen whenever we liked made for a truly luxurious experience.
For dinner, we switched to the teppanyaki restaurant “Zen” located on the same property, where the Ishigaki beef was incredibly tender and absolutely delicious.
Breakfast was also stylish and tasty, and we were thoroughly satisfied until the very end.
The peaceful surroundings allowed us to refresh both body and mind, making it a truly wonderful stay. Thank you very much.

We stayed at Kinnotake Tonosawa for our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived at the entrance to when we got on our taxi to depart, everything was absolutely amazing. The team was amazing, especially our sever during dinner on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, we did not get her name, but she made our evening extra special with her exceptional service. The room was amazing, amenities were top notch with nothing to ask for as everything was prepared in the room. When we visited the bar after dinner, we asked the bartender to make a special Japanese style cocktail. He spent some time thinking about what to make and boom, magic happened. He made the best Japanese cocktail and it was by far the best cocktail we’ve ever had! We also booked a massage and it elevated our experience much more. It is highly recommended! We will definitely be visiting again when we return to Japan! Thank you for everything to make our honeymoon feel extra special and memorable!

Right after checking in, we stepped out onto the terrace of our room to take in the atmosphere.
The sound of the wind rustling through the bamboo leaves and the granite open-air onsen made us feel like we were in a completely different world, far from the city.
Then we got into the onsen. The water temperature was just right, and as we gazed at the scenery while soaking, time passed in the blink of an eye.
Meanwhile, my wife experienced the "Moon" spa course (body & facial) and came back feeling refreshed and very pleased.
After dinner, we enjoyed dessert on the lobby terrace along with some sparklers, which was a lovely touch.
Although it rained during the night, even the onsen in the rain had its own charm.
The next morning, we soaked in the open-air onsen again from around 5:30, surrounded by morning mist, and had a delicious breakfast.
Thanks to the rain, the temperature stayed pleasantly cool, and we were very satisfied with our stay.
We would love to visit again.

The room, the open-air onsen, the food, and the staff’s service were all excellent, and I was able to relax and forget about everyday life.
I have one small request for the future. It seems a pool has been built below the guest rooms, and although it was temporary, I was a bit bothered by the loud voices of some women.
I would appreciate it if some reminders or guidance could be given in such situations.

We stay at a new onsen every time we come to Japan (roughly 10 so far) and were very happy with the Kinnotake Onsen. The grounds were very well maintained (might require a refresh soon), food was excellent, and the customer service rivaled 5 star hotels. I thought the Hanabi on the lanai was a nice touch at night. They were also very accommodating to my pregnant wife’s dietary restrictions. Thank you for including a pregnancy pillow in the room. I also very liked the ability to add additional dishes to our dinner.

My only comments other than positive were the mosquitoes near our outdoor bath (1st floor room) and the lack of complimentary food (light bites) that are usually common in onsen.

Overall would highly recommend.

We stayed here to celebrate a family birthday.
Although it is relatively close to Hakone-Yumoto, the hotel is located beyond a bridge, which gave us a nice sense of being away from everyday life.

The variety of food was especially impressive, and we were very satisfied as we felt full from both dinner and breakfast.

All the staff who assisted us were very pleasant, and although there were guests from overseas, everyone provided wonderful hospitality.

I only used the café space after meals, but it was nice to be able to enjoy high-quality offerings all-inclusive. I think those who drink alcohol will especially appreciate this.

The room felt a little dark (which gave it a nice atmosphere), but it was somewhat dim for doing makeup. Overall, the room was spacious and comfortable.

I would like to use this hotel again if I have the opportunity.

We stayed here to celebrate my wife's recovery.
On the way to the facility from the bridge reserved for guests, we could see the mountain railway, which made us feel very excited.
Upon arrival, we were welcomed with delicious drinks and sweets in a very clean lounge.
Overall, the meals were excellent, and the private open-air onsen in our room was wonderful—we were very satisfied with our stay.
If I may offer one small suggestion, having an extra men's yukata and samue available would have made the experience even better.
The drink service in the lounge and the warm hospitality of the staff during dinner and breakfast were also very impressive and made us feel welcome.

The service, the meals, and the rooms are all excellent, and I have stayed here many times.
This time, I visited after receiving a notice for 30% off.
Perhaps due to the discount, the room was a bit smaller than usual, but it wasn’t an issue.
The meals were delicious, but I was disappointed that the rice at both dinner and breakfast was not very good.
During dinner, I was bothered by the loud conversations among some of the service staff.

Up until now, I have always been very satisfied with my stays, and I plan to continue visiting in the future as well.
The chirimen sansho given at checkout was also delicious.

The staff are highly professional, the room was clean, and the atmosphere was very relaxing.
I was very satisfied overall.
If I had to mention two small things:
The rice served at both dinner and breakfast felt a little dry.
Although I cannot speak for the other rooms, I found the layout from the shower room to the open-air bath somewhat inconvenient.
That said, I still believe this is an outstanding ryokan.
I am already planning to visit again in the autumn.

Upon arriving at Kinnotake Tonosawa, we were immediately greeted by incredibly friendly and professional staff. They brought us to the room and we were immediately impressed by the size, cleanliness, and details of the room. The onsen was a treat, as was the comfort of the beds. The bathroom and closet size is incredibly generous as well.

The rest of the property was great -- particularly the included beverage area and dinner. I would highly recommend the restaurant for vegetarians. We had stayed at a different ryokan who prepared fairly bland and lackluster vegetarian food. However, Kinnotake Tonosawa's food was creative, full of flavor, and plentiful.

The gym is fairly small and a bit too warm for our personal taste, but that was our only flaw that we found.

I stayed here because someone I know works at this property.
I was planning to propose, and when I mentioned it to the staff, they gladly supported me and even decorated the room.

I had wanted to visit for some time.
Soaking in the onsen while gazing at the beautiful bamboo forest was the perfect escape from everyday life.
The environment was ideal for enjoying something extraordinary. They were also very considerate and accommodating of our dietary requests.
One small disappointment was that the sauna was fully booked shortly after we checked in, even though we contacted them relatively early.
However, even with that, the open-air onsen, the food, and the relaxing time we spent more than made up for it.

As soon as we entered the building, we were greeted by the pleasant scent of incense.
The room was spacious, still new and clean, and the open-air onsen was larger than it appeared in the photos, which was a nice surprise.

The public onsen has been replaced by a swimming pool, which was a bit disappointing, but soaking in our private onsen under the starry night sky made for a wonderful experience.

We appreciated the afternoon tea service, the thoughtful touches like tidying up the room and lighting the firepit during dinner, and even bringing cake to the room. The meals were plentiful and delightful.

Although a TV set was provided, we had such a peaceful stay that we never even turned it on.

The meals and service were truly excellent.
However, I was disappointed that the sink area was directly visible from the guest room, so brushing teeth and similar activities were fully exposed. Additionally, the shower room had no blinds or curtains, and the glass door made it completely see-through.

I felt that the design did not take privacy into consideration.
This time I stayed with my family, but even among family members, it was uncomfortable.

Since Hakone is nearby, I had never actually stayed overnight before. But this time, I decided to try staying in Hakone for the first time and chose this place based on its great reviews.

Just as the reviews said, it was a truly satisfying experience.

The atmosphere of the inn and the demeanor of all the staff were both excellent. The private onsen in the room had a beautiful view of bamboo and hydrangeas, which created a wonderfully relaxing environment.

I was a bit unsure about using an open-air onsen in the heat of July, but the breeze from the river in the morning and evening made it very comfortable.

This has become a place I would love to visit again in a different season.
