Kuzuryu Shrine—Hidden Dragon God Shrine on Lake Ashi

Kuzuryu Shrine: A Sacred Prayer to the Dragon God Beneath Lake Ashi

A hidden sanctuary of love, prosperity, and ancient myth—only reachable by foot, bike, or boat.

Deep in the mystical forest beyond Lake Ashi lies Kuzuryu Shrine, a spiritual destination wrapped in myth, mystery, and powerful energy.

According to legend, a terrifying nine-headed dragon once lived in Lake Ashi, causing natural disasters and plagues to afflict nearby villages. A revered monk eventually subdued the dragon, transforming it into a guardian deity now enshrined at this sacred site.

Today, Kuzuryu Shrine is known as a “power spot” — a spiritual site where people come to pray for Romantic connection
Financial luck
Business prosperity

Though remote, this hidden shrine continues to draw devoted visitors from across Japan.

What makes Kuzuryu Shrine even more unique is that you can’t drive there.

Access Overview

Walk 30 minutes through forest trails from Hakone-en

Rent a bicycle (about 10 minutes)

Or take a private motorboat from Hakone-en (round-trip ~¥2,200)

On the 13th of every month, something truly special happens: a monthly ritual prayer is held by Shinto priests. On this day, larger sightseeing boats depart from Motohakone Port and Hakone-en Port, bringing worshippers from all over Japan.

This sacred ceremony remains largely unknown to international travelers — making it a perfect off-the-beaten-path experience for those seeking a deeper, more spiritual connection with Japan.
