Everything was amazing, service at reception and meals, dinners were especially great as we were served by the friendliest Japanese lady.

However, room service took one of the welcome sweets the ryokan left for us after they cleaned on the first day. We had kept it as a treat for the 2nd night to find it was gone. This wasn’t an issue as “we’re missing a freebie”, it just left a feeling of insecurity.

Other than that, amazing experience, and we look forward to come back.

I stayed for one night during my visit to Hakone. Everything—the dining, service, and onsen—was exceptional. Receiving such top-tier hospitality made for a magnificent travel memory.

Among all the famous ryokan and hotels I have stayed at in Hakone, this had the absolute best onsen. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the service was good. On the downside, the table in the room felt sticky. Also, since I do not drink alcohol, I wish the room rate were lower. Still, I would love to stay here again for the onsen.

My spouse and I stayed here for one night. It is a wonderful ryokan, and although we travel every month, I felt this building had the most historical charm and character of any place we have visited so far. Keeping up an old structure while making modern updates must be challenging. Honestly, many of the staff members were young or international, which felt slightly out of touch with the traditional atmosphere. Furthermore, there were a few instances where our requests were not conveyed properly. They were not major issues so I did not speak up, but it was a bit disappointing. Still, their dedication was clear, so we did not feel bad about it. The most disappointing part was the food. Some items seemed prefabricated, and the skipjack tuna tataki was of a quality lower than what even a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant would serve, making it our most disappointing dining experience to date. We usually book through Rakuten Travel or Ikyu, but this time I booked an advantageous plan directly on the official website, so I am unsure if that affected the meal menu. Serving sirloin steak alongside seasoned rice also felt like an odd match. Breakfast, however, was generally delicious.

Thank you for taking such good care of us during our two-day stay. As expected, it was an exceptional experience. As a historic ryokan founded in the Edo period in 1662, I felt transported back to the Edo era the moment I stepped into the entrance. The all-inclusive drink service, which included beer, sake, and other alcoholic beverages, was also a deeply appreciated feature. However, it is a great shame that the all-inclusive service will end in October. The complimentary drinks prepared in the room’s minibar were a delightful touch that allowed us to relax in comfort. Being able to enjoy fresh, 100% free-flowing onsen waters in our private room bath whenever we wished was pure bliss. Thanks to the onsen benefits, my body felt thoroughly warmed, and my skin became silky smooth. The free private open-air onsen with free-flowing waters was also a wonderfully cozy space. The public baths left a strong impression as well, conveying an atmosphere reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho eras. No matter which bath we entered, we could fully savor the free-flowing waters and truly feel the incredible benefits of Ashinoyu Onsen. Although the overall structure is historic, the repairs, maintenance, and cleaning are impeccably maintained, making our stay exceedingly comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast utilized local ingredients, and it was evident that everything was carefully selected—fresh and wonderfully seasoned. The Yusakaji (Kamakura Ancient Road) passes right through the ryokan's garden, allowing us to enjoy strolling near Aji-ga-ike Pond and Kumano Shrine while imagining the journeys of ancient travelers. With convenient access from the Tokyo metropolitan area, this is a fantastic ryokan we would

The cuisine was not bad, but it was disappointing that the selection of alcoholic beverages in the free-flow evening service was somewhat lacking. The attending staff were mostly young international employees who were all working hard. However, their service felt overly scripted and a bit insufficient. For a historic, long-established ryokan like this, I believe Japanese guests at least would hope to engage in natural conversation with senior staff members who are well-versed in the history of the property.

I am pregnant and stayed here to create lasting memories during our final trip as a couple before the baby arrives, and I am truly satisfied. First, the quality of the onsen is outstanding, with a lovely sulfur scent. I was amazed by how smooth and glowing my skin felt after bathing—it felt completely refreshed, and I have never experienced such results from an onsen before. Furthermore, thank you for your thoughtful service, including placing a body pillow for pregnant guests on the bed and accommodating my dietary needs. This is a ryokan I would love to visit again and again. We will definitely return.

I had a wonderful stay last time, so I made a reservation hoping to bring my mother this time. We were looking forward to staying in a different room from our previous visit, but upon entering, it smelled moldy, which was disappointing. Even for an older building, that level of mold odor is hard to accept.

This was one of many repeat visits for us. It was our first time staying in August, and we truly enjoyed the wonderful cuisine, featuring dishes we had never tried before. Despite the rainy weather, we were able to enjoy the open-air onsen using the borrowed woven straw hats. The staff's service was as friendly and welcoming as always, allowing us to fully relax. It is disappointing to hear that the all-inclusive service will be discontinued, but we look forward to visiting again.

This was my second stay, following my first visit in July this year. As before, I had a very comfortable time. However, I have a few disappointing points to share (including my suggestions). As a drinker, the all-inclusive service is very welcome, but I heard that drinks will be excluded at the dining venue starting in October. I was relieved to know that the lounge and minibar drinks remain included, though. Another point is that the private open-air onsen, which used to be free, will become a paid service from October. Even if I accept the paid policy, I was shocked by the price—5,500 yen (tax included) for 45 minutes. I hope you will reconsider this. Lastly, regarding breakfast, I heard the menu remains the same throughout the year, but personally, I feel it would be nice to change it seasonally. Despite these negative comments, please continue to be a ryokan loved by everyone.

We stayed here again this year to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We sincerely appreciate the warm and thoughtful service from the staff. Just like last year, we stayed in Gyokosou. However, compared to last year, the room felt darker overall, and there was noticeable humidity. The clothes we hung in the closet felt damp by the next morning. There was also a mix of various odors throughout the room, which was disappointing since it is our favorite room.

The service was top-notch. The international staff were working hard despite being unfamiliar with Japan, and the Japanese staff were flawless.

As for the onsen, being able to use the ultra-luxurious private open-air onsen for free was incredible. As a certified Onsen Sommelier, experiencing a 100% free-flowing sulfur spring with no added water, heating, disinfection, or circulation filtration was absolute perfection.

The meals were packed with nutrition.

I felt as though my body was completely purified in just a one-night stay.

We stayed here for the first time for my partner's birthday trip, and both of us were able to spend a truly comfortable time from beginning to end.

What left the strongest impression on us was the hospitality of all the staff members. Beyond mere politeness, we could genuinely feel a heartful devotion from everyone to make guests feel at home, which made us extremely happy. We felt a warm sense of hospitality throughout the entire ryokan.

The meals were all delicious, the portion size was just right, and we were thoroughly satisfied.

The onsen was also fantastic. In addition to the private open-air onsen in our room, the public bath had a wonderful atmosphere, and the quality of the spring water was so refreshing that we could thoroughly enjoy a relaxing soak.

While the interior retains a charming sense of history, it is also impeccably maintained and clean, offering a calm and comfortable atmosphere.

We would definitely love to visit again.

This was a repeat visit from last year.
This time, we chose a room with an open-air onsen.
One of the main reasons we decided to return was that I have many food dislikes, and the adjusted menu they prepared for us last year was truly delicious. Thank you again for accommodating us so well this time.
The food was delicious, the portion size was just right, and my husband was very satisfied too. The all-inclusive service was also great.
We thoroughly enjoyed all of the onsen baths.

Regarding the private baths, we only realized during this stay that we could make another reservation after using our booked slot.
We wish this had been explained to us at the beginning.
Also, after being served welcome tea and snacks at check-in, we felt we were kept waiting for quite a long time.
Nothing was mentioned about reserving a private bath until we brought it up ourselves. When we asked what times were available, the staff member went to the front desk to check, but upon returning, they simply said, "I will guide you to your room," so we had to ask again, "What happened to the private bath reservation?"
The international staff member had a wonderfully cute smile and a lovely personality, but perhaps they were still new or in training.
We noticed an instructor was shadowing them later, and we felt a bit more guidance on the spot might have been helpful.
During the room orientation, we were told yukata robes were provided. When we asked if samue (casual lounge wear) was available, they said they would bring some right away. However, what they brought was not samue, but likely a tanzen (padded winter coat).
When we called the front desk, they asked if it was under the yukata, and upon checking, we found it there.
It was partly our fault for not checking properly, but there might have been a slight language barrier.
Please note that we do not have a negative impression at all, so please do not scold or blame the staff member.
Despite sharing various details, we truly had a relaxing time. Thank you for taking care of us.

The quality of the onsen and the atmosphere of the large bath are flawless. Located at a high altitude in Hakone, Ashinoyu is a wonderfully cool, quiet, and peaceful spot. However, as the staff members are mostly young, their finer movements lacked refinement—particularly walking heavily on the wooden floors. It felt Japanese on the surface, but lacked the true traditional spirit. On a positive note, having a chair provided near the room's window was very helpful.

We visited again this year following our stay last year. We thoroughly enjoyed the onsen, cuisine, and welcoming staff. As lovers of sake, the all-inclusive service was especially appreciated. Although it rained from the afternoon into the next day, watching the rain from the sofas throughout Matsuzakaya Honten was wonderfully atmospheric, making us want to lounge until checkout. We look forward to returning.

We stayed in the "Tamakazura" room with an indoor bath, which provided a deeply relaxing time. As there is no shower in this room, we used the showers at the private open-air onsen and the large bath. My wife loves this place, and this was our third consecutive year visiting. The staff, including many international members, treated us with great care. We plan to return next year as well. Wishing health and happiness to everyone at Matsuzakaya Honten. Thank you very much.

We stayed here for 2 nights (myself, my husband and our 2 teenage sons). We all loved it! The food was delicious, the room was beautiful And we especially loved our private onsen on our balcony. The kids loved booking the other private onsens onsite (for free) that could fit more people. The location and the beautiful natural surroundings were perfect. We enjoyed spending time in the relaxed library sitting area, enjoying a drink and reading in the peace and quiet. All the staff were so helpful and friendly and the fact that we don't speak Japanese was not a problem at all! Would definitely recommend and return. It's also easy to get a taxi or take the bus (bus stop is just 50 meters away) to get to the Hakone Open Air Museum, the Chisuji Falls, or into town.

While preserving its long history and majestic character, the property has been thoughtfully renovated with modern comforts, making my stay exceptionally comfortable. The onsen, filled with floating mineral deposits, is truly the best in Hakone. My spacious room was well-air-conditioned in every area, ensuring comfort in any season. As a solo traveler, I greatly appreciated the semi-private dining, and above all, the wonderfully welcoming staff made me feel at ease. Since there are various room types available, I look forward to returning and trying a different room next time.

This was our second 3-night stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the high-quality onsen in both the private and large baths.

Since the dining area was so close to our room, we could relax, read, and nap right up until mealtime. The food was excellent, especially the dried horse mackerel—I rediscovered how delicious it truly is. The staff, including the international team, were all very friendly and made us feel welcome.

This will definitely be our regular ryokan. Since we are away during the autumn and winter, we look forward to returning next April.

It is sad to see that the pricing and other aspects have changed to cater to foreign tourists.
Since I wanted to stay as affordably as possible, I waited for this plan to book.
It is my once-a-year reward trip.
I was able to reset in a clean, extraordinary space.

Since I did not encounter other guests in the large bath, I don't think it is necessary to go out of the way to choose a room with an onsen bath.

What impressed me the most at dinner this time was the Kamo eggplant dengaku.
It was delicious, and I ate it all, even the skin.
I hope to encounter this menu again someday.

Since the grand reopening, I have been visiting almost every year.
While the number of international staff has been increasing year by year, I am satisfied with the hospitality.
Not to mention the clean and comfortable facilities, the meals are good, but above all, the onsen is the best.
Even though it is an inn with rich history, I also like that it is not overflowing with people.
I heard that the manager changed this year, so I look forward to the future as well.

We were overwhelmed by the room, which was lavishly spacious for just the two of us, and the vast, magnificent garden that couldn't fit into a single photo.
The facilities and service were meticulous down to every detail, overflowing with a welcoming spirit that made our stay extremely pleasant.

Above all, what deserves special mention is the onsen.
We have visited various onsen across Japan, but the onsen here is on another level.
I cannot express it well due to my limited vocabulary, but it is overwhelming.

We would definitely love to visit again in a different season.
Thank you very much for taking such great care of us.

I stayed here for the first time because of the good reviews. The service was very polite, and everyone greeted us with a smile, which felt great.
Overall, I am satisfied, but I would like to write down a few points that my companion and I noticed.

・Meals Although it was a private room, there was no call bell to order drinks, so we had no choice but to wait for food to be served or open the door and call out loudly, "Excuse me!" It would be even better if this could be improved. As for the portion size, it might feel a bit insufficient for younger people.

・In-house slippers There are many stairs, making them easy to trip on or slip off, so I think another type would be better.
(Many guests are elderly, so I think this would help prevent falls.)

・Room Overall it was clean, but there were several long female hairs on the floor inside the room. Also, if there were a TV near the bed, we could watch it while relaxing.

Since the service and the quality of the onsen were wonderful, we will visit again if we have the chance.
Thank you very much.

I had long wanted to stay at Matsuzakaya, which has a 360-year history in Hakone, and this time we stayed here to celebrate my husband's birthday. Since I had informed them in advance, I was deeply moved by their extremely attentive hospitality, such as a surprise in our room, a dessert plate, and a small gift upon our departure. Thank you as well for accommodating my dietary preferences. I relaxed and took my time soaking in the room's open-air bath while gazing at the trees in the garden. It was very healing.

While I had high expectations due to the good reviews and polite email communications, I was also a bit anxious until we actually stayed, since this trip was a birthday gift for my partner who loves onsen. However, it was a truly wonderful ryokan and we were completely satisfied. All the staff members provided polite service with non-stop smiles. The open-air onsen, private onsen, and room's open-air onsen were all amazing. Even though it was mid-July, being up in the mountains made it cool, and we were able to enjoy the onsen comfortably. We stayed in a room for 2-4 people. It was very spacious and comfortable. The beds were fluffy, allowing for a good night's sleep. Also, every dish for dinner and breakfast was wonderful, and even my partner, who has a discerning palate, praised it as delicious! I don't usually eat breakfast, so I wasn't very hungry and feel sorry for leaving some behind. The food was so delicious that I feel frustrated I couldn't finish it...!! You could tell they used high-quality ingredients. There were many international staff members, but I was surprised by how remarkably fluent their Japanese was. They seemed to coordinate well using earpieces, and I felt they had a solid system in place to respond to guests quickly. We didn't do any sightseeing and spent all our time at the ryokan from check-in to check-out, but it became the best memory. My partner was delighted too, and choosing this ryokan was truly the absolute best decision!

From the staff member who came outside to greet us before check-in when we arrived looking around on our first visit, to the person who escorted us with an umbrella after check-out out of concern for the rain, and the staff member who offered to take a photo of us during our meal—thank you so very much.

It is wonderful how the building has been comfortably renovated while preserving its historic atmosphere and charm.
The onsen felt so comforting to the body. Having walked the Old Hakone Highway that day, I was suffering from muscle soreness and fatigue, but after a good night's sleep, I felt completely refreshed. In particular, the room bath was filled with sulfur-scented steam in a cozy bathroom space, working like a natural sauna that completely revitalized me.
The food was flawless, and I ate everything right down to the final kamameshi (Pot-Cooked Rice). Breakfast made plentiful use of local ingredients and was an energizing menu.
Furthermore, the staff clearly valued heartfelt conversations and explanations, making this a ryokan where the concept of hospitality truly takes shape.

I travel to onsen all over Japan and stay about 40 nights a year, but even in comparison, the service and hospitality here were wonderful.
Alcohol was free in the lounge, but as someone who doesn't drink, it was a bit disappointing. Since the only cold non-alcoholic drinks were sweet juices, I ended up drinking water or putting ice in black tea to cool it down myself.
The onsen water is mildly alkaline, and I think it is one of the best onsen qualities in Hakone.

The bed was also huge, a nice change from the small, city rooms. The food was wonderful. The fish, the vegetables, the meat, were perfect. The presentation was beautiful and the flavors were always great. Additionally, my wife does not like fish. They were so accommodating of her and made her some excellent substitutes. The onsens, both the one in our room and the private one, were a perfect way to relax after a few days in Tokyo. I would recommend Matsuzakaya Honten to anyone looking for an onsen experience Hakone. We stayed here for 2 nights during our trip to Japan for our honeymoon. From the outset the staff is amazing! They are welcoming and informative. Our room was amazing with the private onsen and they’d even left a sweet surprise for our honeymoon in the room.

Meals were delicious (a lot of food at both dinner and breakfast so make sure to show up hungry!). The chefs used many different flavors, and textures, everything was fresh and we left satisfied.

Thank you to all the staff who made our stay so incredible. Will definitely return when we come back to Hakone area!

This is my second visit to this ryokan. My first visit was in February of this year, when I came with my older sister for the very first time. The hospitality, room, bath, and meals were all a perfect score in my book. In particular, the hot spring here is exceptional, filled with plenty of yunohana (mineral bath flowers). I truly think it is rare to find a hot spring of this high quality anywhere else. Because it was so wonderful, I returned this time to make sure my husband could experience it as well.

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by the same service staff member from our last visit. I was incredibly impressed that they remembered my previous stay with my sister, which gave a wonderful impression. The training of the employees is truly magnificent.

Although our room did not have a private hot spring this time, I personally prefer larger baths, so it was not a problem at all. It takes a short walk to get to the large public bath, but even that felt nice as it allowed us to fully savor the traditional atmosphere of Matsuzakaya Honten. The room and the entire facility were thoroughly cleaned down to every corner, allowing us to spend a highly pleasant time.

I was also completely satisfied with the meals and have nothing but praise, but what left a particularly strong impression on me was the opened and dried horse mackerel (Aji no Hiraki) served at breakfast. While it is a staple of a traditional Japanese ryokan breakfast, the one served here is uniquely different and exceptionally delicious. It is a wonderful thing that even a simple, non-flashy breakfast side dish is crafted so beautifully, making Matsuzakaya Honten an inn that truly makes me want to visit again.

Despite the heavy rain, the staff came out to welcome us. They even walked all the way to the parking lot and said, "Please use our umbrella." They were so kind and I was deeply moved.
Also, the check-in process in the lobby was wonderful. The welcome Japanese sweets and green tea were excellent.
The guidance to our room was also full of thoughtfulness, as they carried our suitcases and showed exceptional kindness at every single turn.
When we entered the room, we turned right down the hallway and found a tatami Japanese-style room. It was a bright room with large windows. While I was thinking to myself that this must be where they lay out the futons, they opened the sliding doors in the back. A bed appeared with a big impact. A candle art made of towels to celebrate the birthday was sparkling beautifully. I couldn't help but scream with joy. I was way too happy.
Furthermore, the dinner course meal was so voluminous that we could barely finish it. To my surprise, they made the leftover sea bream rice into rice balls and offered them to us, saying, "Please enjoy this as a midnight snack." I was astonished and so delighted.
From beginning to end, their thoughtfulness was truly wonderful.
The fact that we could utilize five different private rental onsen completely free of charge was also an incredibly generous and pleasant service. The quality was so exceptionally high that I even wondered if they were doing okay offering such premium service.
I have visited many hot spring resorts in Atami and Hakone before, but this inn has suddenly jumped to the absolute number one spot by a landslide. It is a warm, comforting inn that makes me feel like I absolutely want to visit again.

We held a celebration for my Koki (70th birthday). A total of three families—including my two children's families with young toddlers, and my wife and I—booked three rooms and stayed for one night. As a ryokan with historic architecture, we felt a deep sense of historical charm and were able to spend a great time together. I am glad that we were able to enjoy both the onsen in our room and the large public baths, and it seems our four grandchildren had a wonderful time as well.

However, because our dinner start time was late and the Kaiseki dinner menu featured many courses, it took a long time and lasted late into the evening. It seemed that having a meal that extended past 9:00 PM was tough for the toddlers, and some of the children fell asleep halfway through. While I understand the difficulty of meal preparation and serving, I would have appreciated a bit more consideration for the children.

Although it just happened to be my birth month during this trip, when I was shown to my room, there was a birthday cake display made out of bath towels on the bed. While I have taken commemorative photos at other places before, I was deeply moved and thrilled by this kind of celebration, the likes of which I have never experienced. Thank you so very much.

I stayed here to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. We were generally satisfied with the room, onsen, and dining. However, there are three points of dissatisfaction. First, there was no lemon sour included in the all-inclusive drink options during dinner. I wondered why it was available for free at the bar but not at dinner. Second, the variety of yukata was limited. I thought it would be better if there were some brighter designs. Third, the onsen was far away and difficult to find. I would like the map of the inn to be easier to understand. However, about a month has passed since our stay, and my girlfriend and I are still talking about wanting to stay here again. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much for this time.

We had so much fun at this resort. It was so relaxing. The service was top notch and so far the best we’ve experienced in Japan. Our waiters were so personable and made our experience so much better. We LOVED the dinner service but thought the breakfast was a little “out there”. There were only a few things at breakfast that we really enjoyed. I love all the amenities that are included. Either it isn’t posted somewhere, or I missed it, but they have a free drink bar with specific hours, and meals were included. We also were able to get a massage and those were two of the best massages we’ve had! Overall 9.5/10!!

Excellent experience and magnificent rooms. Both Akebono, which had a superb and romantic private rotenburo in front of the bedroom window, and Tokiwa, which had a superlative corner view and a secluded private onsen outside. Service is also amazing. Exquisite Japanese Kaiseki-style breakfast were served, as well as dinners in the restaurant area, but breakfast quality in particular surprised us.

I stayed here to celebrate my husband's birthday. The hospitality was excellent, and we were able to spend a quiet, relaxing time. However, regarding the future, while it may be unavoidable that all alcohol at dinner will become paid, the wine is a bit expensive. I felt the same way at your sister inns in Hakone. I felt that if there were options from a slightly more reasonable price range, we could enjoy them more along with other drinks. Everything else was completely satisfying, so we would love to visit again.

Since the pandemic settled down in the autumn of 2022, I started a journey to go around different 100% free-flowing onsen, beginning from the Tohoku region. I had stayed at this onsen inn twice about 30 years ago and had some complaints back then, but this time was completely different, and the level of quality had improved remarkably. Needless to say, the water quality of the Open-air Onsen in the room was exceptional. The staff's service, the silence and cleanliness of the inn, the fully equipped room amenities, and the morning and evening meals were flawless, ranking it as one of the top-class among all the 100% free-flowing onsen I have visited so far. No matter how many times I went to the large public Open-air Onsen, it was completely private, and I was able to monopolize the wide and deep bathtub. It appeared that about 80% of the guests were international travelers, which ironically worked in my favor. I have added this to my list of inns that I want to visit continuously from now on.

I was able to experience an extraordinary getaway in this historic building. The quality of the onsen was excellent; it relieved my stiffness and allowed me to sleep soundly. The bedding was also very comfortable. Every dish was delicious, and I could feel the chef's dedication to the cuisine. The all-inclusive drinks were a delightful touch. The staff was friendly, making our stay very comfortable. I would love to visit again during the autumn foliage season.

My wife and I stayed here for the first time at the end of April.
The hot springs, meals, and the historic building were just as wonderful as we had expected. It was a place we would love to visit again.
Since more than 80% of the guests seemed to be from overseas, I felt as if I were in another country during dinner (lol). Nevertheless, the staff provided excellent service, so we were able to spend a very pleasant time.

One disappointing thing was that there was no TV in the bedroom of the "Akebono" suite; I felt that even a small wall-mounted one would have been good. Another thing was that the tissues were quite coarse—it has been a long time since I encountered that quality.

Aside from those points, I am very satisfied. This is one of the inns I would definitely want to stay at again if I have the chance. Thank you for everything.

After staying for the first time last year, I was captivated by the hot springs with plenty of "yunohana" (mineral flowers), so I returned again this year. The hot springs are wonderful. However, it was a bit disappointing to find that the selection of drinks in the lounge and during dinner had decreased compared to last year, though I suppose it is unavoidable in this day and age. The staff were all polite and provided pleasant service. I look forward to visiting again next year.

My friend and I agree this is peak luxury when it comes to Ryokans and vacations in general. Our stay was amazing from start to finish with the highest level of customer care and attention. From the onset we were greeted warmly with tea and selected our Yukata's. The facility is sprawling but not overwhelming with relaxing free spaces to read, relax, and enjoy plentiful drinks (alcoholic and non) as well as snacks. But you may not need any snacks as breakfast and dinner are incredibly filling and plentiful! Each meal is made and served with such care and beauty- everything was almost to pretty to eat! They were sensitive to any dietary restrictions and had options for adding on where needed. The Onsens (private and public) were so well maintained and so incredibly relaxing. The location is further from the touristy area so you're truly away from the fray to relax in a quiet environment. That being said, bus access was very easy and nearby are a few beautiful hikes. My only regret was not staying another night to get another dip in the Onsen and experience another incredible meal. Thank you to Matsuzakaya Honten for one of the best getaways I've ever had!

A Gentle Onsen and Heartfelt Hospitality
The onsen was gentle as always. Among the many options in Hakone, I especially love the onsen at Matsuzakaya and the Odakyu Highland Hotel (which is currently under renovation). Dinner was a colorful menu that truly captured the essence of spring. I also sincerely appreciate the staff’s thoughtfulness in adjusting the meat portions for me and removing the onsen egg from my breakfast. Every staff member—both the new faces and the familiar ones—greeted me with a smile, making my stay very pleasant. I truly hope the unique hospitality of Matsuzakaya continues for years to come.

Our family had a lovely time at Matsuzakaya Honten, where we stayed for a couple of nights. The rooms are beautiful, the in-suite mineral spring tub/bath convenient, the staff attentive and friendly, and the hotel served as a great base for exploration of the Hakone area.

The accommodation and the natural environment allowed us to really leave our daily worries behind and switch off and relax.
In the mornings, we could observe birds in the garden while soaking in the onsen water, which was a blessing for the skin and has an excellent temperature.
In the evening, even a small Tankuki visited the garden.
The cuisine was also excellent, with several traditional courses with magnificent presentation and taste.
The staff was attentive, very friendly and spoke good english.
The Ryokan is easy to reach even with public transportation and it takes only a short bus ride to reach the marvelous lake Ashi.

Now that I am over 60 and have more time and financial flexibility, I decided to stay at Matsuzakaya Honten, a place I have wanted to visit at least once for a long time. It was even more wonderful than I expected, and I am very satisfied. First of all, I loved the atmosphere that allowed me to enjoy the excellent hot spring water in such beautiful facilities. I was completely satisfied with the Open-air Onsen in my room, the private open-air baths, and the large public bath. The quality of the meals and the service were also fantastic. The staffs were well-trained, and everyone provided truly wonderful hospitality. I would definitely like to stay here again. Thank you very much.

The onsen is free-flowing directly from the source and is truly wonderful. There was a bath in the room, so I could soak whenever I wanted. I enjoyed the three different types of water in the large public bath, and our whole family had a great time together in the private bath. I was very satisfied. Perhaps because the room we stayed in was old, the sound of the air conditioning and other noises were bothersome when we were trying to sleep. The service and hospitality were polite.

After finding a great deal during my stay in January, I made a reservation for March. Above all, the onsen is excellent. I have visited many hot springs, but being able to enjoy free-flowing onsen in the large public onsen, private onsen, and in-room onsen is truly satisfying.

Each room has its own unique atmosphere, and it is also enjoyable to choose which room to stay in next time. The all-inclusive drinks are a great benefit for those who enjoy alcohol, though I felt that a wider selection would be even better. Compared to other ryokan, the additional drinks available for order seemed a bit expensive.

Even so, overall I am very satisfied and would like to stay again.

We stayed for one night over a weekend in March at Shunpuso Tokiwa with my son, hoping to give my mother-in-law, who lives alone, a relaxing time.

The room was spacious, clean, and calming, and being a corner room surrounded by greenery made it especially wonderful. The indoor open-air onsen was a true luxury, and we could enjoy the mineral-rich water at any time.

The meals were excellent, beautifully presented, and enjoyable to the eye as well. We were able to relax and savor dinner for about two hours while enjoying the complimentary drinks.

We feel fortunate to have had this opportunity to stay at a special New Year appreciation plan.

The staff were warm and welcoming, making our stay very comfortable, and my mother-in-law was very pleased.

I was hesitant because of the “non-refundable” condition and almost lost my preferred dates, but I finally decided on another day and was able to visit successfully.

It was my first time in this room, which had been beautifully renovated. With windows on two sides overlooking the garden, the room felt very spacious and open, allowing me to fully enjoy the view.

The onsen, rich with mineral deposits, was wonderful as always. What made me happiest was becoming familiar with some of the staff, who warmly greeted me with, “We’re happy to see you again.” These interactions made the stay even more enjoyable.

The only minor disappointment was at dinner. I asked for sake to be warmed, but received it cold. When I requested it a second time, emphasizing “please warm it,” I was again served cold sake. The staff member was not Japanese, so I understand mistakes happen, but she has worked at Matsuzakaya for six years. I would have hoped that such a familiar staff member would understand and fulfill this simple request.

Even so, this did not diminish my enjoyment. I just returned, and I already want to visit again.

The rooms, onsen, and meals were excellent, and the gentle care throughout the stay made me feel refreshed both physically and mentally. Upon departure, the staff saw us off until we were out of sight, which reminded me of the graceful attentiveness taught by a master of ikebana.

I was deeply impressed by the dedication and sincerity of the staff. Thanks to Matsuzakaya, this trip to Hakone became a memorable and truly enjoyable experience. I am sincerely grateful and look forward to returning.

Just before my pregnancy, I was thinking it would be nice to take a trip as a couple for one last special memory, when I happened to see this ryokan on TV and immediately made a reservation online.
I had informed them about my pregnancy due to dietary considerations, and they kindly prepared a body pillow in the bedroom and cushions for seating at meals, which was very helpful and thoughtful.

Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious, featuring locally sourced ingredients and carefully designed with health in mind. The seasoning was kept minimal, allowing us to truly savor the natural flavors of each ingredient.

The onsen was, needless to say, exceptional. The temperature was perfect, and it felt so blissful that I used both the large public onsen and the private open-air onsen twice. It was also very convenient that bath towels were provided, so there was no need to bring them each time.

The building preserved its traditional charm while being beautifully maintained, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The greenery throughout the property was also a pleasant visual touch.

The staff provided wonderful service, making our stay very pleasant. The complimentary drinks were also excellent, and I was especially impressed by the milk served in the morning.

What people value when choosing a ryokan differs, but this place is excellent in every aspect, including the onsen quality, rooms, cuisine, and hospitality. I have stayed here several times, and each visit has always been filled with wonderful memories. The subtle fragrance of Shoyeido incense throughout the property is soothing from the moment you arrive. The onsen is rich, yet I have never experienced any discomfort from it, which means it suits my skin perfectly. They also accommodated my dietary dislikes by providing alternatives.

As I enjoy antiques, I also take pleasure in appreciating the space visually. With the onsen, the reading I had been saving, and the delicious meals, it became the perfect weekend retreat.
If I may add one request, it would be nice to see some variation in the breakfast. It is very delicious with plenty of local ingredients, though. The time and space at Matsuzakaya are truly a worthwhile investment. I will visit again to relax.

I used the New Year discount promotion, and I was more satisfied than I had anticipated.
Overall, the property has high potential, and there were hardly any complaints.

I had expected the onsen to be a bit more milky in appearance, but there were plenty of mineral deposits in the water, so I was reasonably satisfied.

Just after the steep switchback hill familiar from the Hakone Ekiden ends, as you head toward the highest point of National Route 1, Ashinoyu appears to float at the very top, separated by clouds, in the Hakone Seven Onsens map from the Edo period.

Nowadays, it’s not inconvenient if you have a car, but from the moment I stepped into the inn at 3 PM until 11 AM the next day, I felt as if I were in a world above the clouds.

The building, facilities, furniture, rooms, meals, onsen, and hospitality—all of them—were never ostentatious, yet I could fully enjoy their supreme quality and relax completely.

Every onsen, filled with abundant yu-no-hana (mineral deposits from the spring), flowed continuously, and the meals were outstanding. I was impressed that authentic materials were used in every detail. The sake tasting set came in three tiers, and the premium class allowed me to taste three ultra-rare, top-grade sake varieties, which was extremely satisfying. This combination in a tasting set is truly on a level that seems impossible elsewhere.

Thanks to the special New Year sale, I was able to stay at this inn for the first time. Since it’s a utopia, I might never get the chance to go again—but I find myself gently lingering on the memory, wishing I could return.

As a suggestion, it would be nice if the website included a floor plan of the inn so that the room layout could be understood in advance.

The tradition, the onsen, and the staff were all excellent. Every time, interacting with the young and energetic staff members gave us real energy. Even though people say “these days…,” it is amazing that such wonderful staff exist.

The onsen had plenty of water, and the unique spring quality felt almost like applying lotion. My skin became smooth and hydrated without needing soap. There was much more snow than expected, and the heavy snowfall in the morning completely covered the surroundings, creating an excellent atmosphere. Some areas were not cleared in time, but the staff worked hard.

Inside the room, only air conditioning was available, and there was no humidifier. I also felt that more historical information about the inn could be provided throughout the building. The architecture is traditionally Japanese, yet the hospitality felt similar to that of an overseas hotel.

Dear Matsuzakaya Honten Team,

We stayed in the Himeshara room for one night (02/06–02/07), and we just wanted to say thank you for such a wonderful experience.

From the moment we arrived, everyone was so kind and welcoming. The staff made us feel very comfortable, and we really appreciated the warm and thoughtful service throughout our stay.

The Himeshara room was beautiful and very peaceful. It was clean, cozy, and had such a relaxing atmosphere. We loved the traditional style and all the small details in the room. It was the perfect place to rest and enjoy our time.

The onsen was amazing. It was so relaxing, and we felt completely refreshed after using it. Spending time there was one of the best parts of our trip.

Dinner and breakfast were also excellent. Every dish was beautifully prepared and delicious. We could see how much care and effort went into each meal, and it made the experience even more special.

If we may share one small suggestion, it would be about the dinner/breakfast time options. There were only two available time slots to choose from. It would be even better if guests could choose dinner times more freely in 30-minute intervals.

Everything about our stay was perfect, and we truly enjoyed every moment. Thank you again for your kindness and for giving us such a memorable stay.

We hope to visit Matsuzakaya Honten again in the future. :)

It may have been after a heavy snowfall, but the temperature difference in the passage from the onsen and the strong ventilation in the onsen made it cold inside. Additionally, it was very regrettable that a foreign guest mistakenly entered the women’s and men’s onsen.

I felt that the staff’s service and hospitality were excellent. I would like to stay again in a different season.

It was my first time staying in the “Kumoi” room, and it was wonderful. The corner room had two spaces, a spacious washroom, and the air conditioning worked perfectly throughout, making it very comfortable.

The onsen was a half open-air onsen-style hinoki tub without window glass, with plenty of water at the right temperature. It is sized for one person, so it may not be suitable for families who want to bathe together, but for us, each of us could relax individually and we lost count of how many times we enjoyed it.

The overseas staff members explained the meals carefully and sincerely, which made us feel warm every time.

The room only had a shower, but this was not inconvenient at all since we used the large onsen and open-air onsen. Even if the room had an open-air onsen, we might not have used it because the large onsen and private open-air onsen were so wonderful.

The staff, whether attending to meals or cleaning the inn, served with smiles and made us feel very comfortable. The foreign staff members were likely all highly skilled, speaking both Japanese and English fluently, which was impressive. The Japanese staff were mostly young, eager, and energetic, which was encouraging.

The next day was my husband’s birthday, which we had not mentioned to the inn, but they wrote “Happy Birthday” in chocolate on the dessert plate at the end of dinner. My husband was very happy.

As for the meals, it is a matter of personal taste, but I personally found them enjoyable even if not perfect. Thank you. We would like to visit again next winter.

The room, meals, and service were all excellent. The onsen was especially wonderful—despite the sulfur scent, it left the skin feeling as soft and moisturized as after applying lotion.

We would like to stay here again.

This time, we decided to stay to celebrate a birthday and to take a break after the New Year holidays.
We enjoyed the onsen, savored the meals, and were comforted by the staff, leaving the mountains feeling refreshed. We have already started planning our next visit.

I stayed here for the first time last year and was impressed that everything about this ryokan was the best I had ever experienced. Because of that, I returned after a year. The onsen, meals, room, and staff service were all excellent… or so I would like to say, but there was one minor issue, so I rated it four stars.

When I went to the large onsen at 5:30 AM, a sign said “Cleaning in progress,” so I returned to my room without checking the schedule. However, when I looked at the guide in the room, it said the bath was available from 5:00 AM. I called the front desk and learned that the sign had simply been left out by mistake. The extra trip up and down so early in the morning was a bit tough. Mistakes happen, but I sincerely hope the staff take pride in the inn and ensure this does not happen again.

We stayed here for my partner’s birthday. We had visited a few years ago, and this time the meals were even more delicious, and it seemed there were more young staff members than before.

The next morning, the fire alarm outside our room went off, but it seems that steam from the indoor bath can sometimes cause a false alarm. I was impressed that this incident was shared with all staff, which reflected the high standards of the inn.

The “Ashibue” room is far from the dining area and lounge, and in winter the hallways are as cold as the outside temperature, so it may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues or elderly visitors. However, given the building’s 360-year history, the coldness also added to its charm.

One point for improvement would be the limited choice of soft drinks. It is appreciated that drinks are included, but the lounge juice was not 100% grape juice, and only three or four options, including oolong tea, were available during meals.

Even if prices were slightly higher, offering non-alcoholic cocktails or higher-quality juices included in the rate would make the stay even more satisfying.

I have stayed here more than 30 times, usually at least once a year. Even after the management changed, improvements have been made every year, making the experience even better. There are quite a few foreign staff members, but I appreciate their sincere and polite service. Their dedication seems to reflect the training and education provided. I am impressed by their hard work. I enjoyed both the large onsen and the room bath, as well as the room itself. The onsen and meals are excellent. I will visit again.
One note: the temperature was around minus 10 degrees Celsius at night, and it seemed there may have been some freezing in the drainage pipes. Near the washing area and bath in the large onsen, water accumulated in some spots. This was the first time I noticed it, and I hope it can be inspected.

Actually, I had to speak firmly to the person in charge. I ordered drinks and called several times, but they were not brought, and within an hour, the food was already served. Since we drink quite a lot, it would have been better if the staff had observed our pace and served accordingly. Of course, we did not only order all-inclusive drinks, and it would be a loss for the inn if they did not manage this properly. We did not intend to linger for a long time. It was a little disappointing that the dishes were served in a mechanical manner. The onsen, however, was excellent.

I am a fan of onsen trips, and this onsen, with its natural flowing water, is truly the best. The room’s open-air onsen was very comfortable, and there were also large onsens and private baths, allowing us to fully enjoy the hot springs, which was very satisfying. The room was also comfortable for relaxing, and the meals were delicious. The grated yam with barley rice for breakfast was excellent.
One point to note: the all-inclusive drinks at meals felt a little limited. It would be nice to have a few more options.

A year later and I still think about my time at Matsuzakaya Honten often. From the moment I arrived the staff were so welcoming, warm, and professional, I truly felt like a royal. The space was beautiful, the onsen rejuvenating, and I had the most excellent breakfast and dinner courses with local and seasonal ingredients. If I ever return to Hakone I will not hesitate to stay with them again.

We stayed here for our parents’ 60th birthday celebration.
They were very pleased with the decorations prepared on the bed, the private dining with a dessert plate, and the ceremonial red vest (chanchanko) provided during dinner.
Above all, the room’s open-air onsen and the large onsen were excellent, allowing us to relax and relieve our daily fatigue.

Some points to note:

There were children running around on the floor above us, which was a bit noisy.

The toothpaste provided in the amenities was somewhat difficult to use.

Although the plan was all-inclusive, there were many paid menu items and some could not be taken into the room.

Considering this was a discounted plan, the overall quality at this price made us feel we would like to stay again. We appreciated all the thoughtful arrangements.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The establishment is old but very well maintained, and it is simply beautiful and fun to wander around. Our room was really spacious and I loved the decoration and the mix of modern and traditional. My favourite thing was the private outdoor onsen for our room - it was so relaxing to soak in the hot tub in the cold weather, we couldn’t get enough.
The staff are so friendly and warm, and they were so helpful for our requests.

Thank you again for your care during our stay.
However, we were concerned that the shower in the large onsen did not get warm enough in the morning, and that the fuel for the irori stove was empty, so we could not enjoy it during our stay.
We are looking forward to visiting again next time.

My family of three arrived here to relax after a week of sightseeing and the hustle and bustle or Osaka and Kyoto. We were greeted upon arrival and give. resort shoes (slides) that we would be using throughout our stay.

During the check-in process, we were given a choice of yukata to wear during our stay. We took off our regular city clothes and remained in the resort wear all throughout the stay.

This is not a modern hotel property, and the facility is not new, by any means. But it has been well maintained and has a lot of modern improvements: in-room bathrooms are large and super clean and modernized. Our room (Gyokoso) had a private Hinoki bath and an outdoor private onsen. The bedroom was large, as well as the indoor sitting area and a lovely outdoor viewing area. Great place to sit and ponder.

The onsen is filled with natural - and incredibly sulphuric water. The smell definitely takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s definitely alll natural.

I cannot say enough about the kind staff who took care of us during our stay. The kaiseki cuisine was elaborate and delicious, and those who attended to us were patient and friendly without being obsequious. Also of note: they were all either very pretty or very good looking, ha!

All in all, a well-preserved and exclusive resort in Hakone. You get a feel for the imperial-ness of times gone by and the attentive service you imagine at a place of this caliber.
