We had an amazing time at this ryokan. Everything was perfect, and we really felt like we had traveled back in time and experienced the traditional life of old Japan. It was truly a dream come true.

It is sad to see that the pricing and other aspects have changed to cater to foreign tourists.
Since I wanted to stay as affordably as possible, I waited for this plan to book.
It is my once-a-year reward trip.
I was able to reset in a clean, extraordinary space.

Since I did not encounter other guests in the large bath, I don't think it is necessary to go out of the way to choose a room with an onsen bath.

What impressed me the most at dinner this time was the Kamo eggplant dengaku.
It was delicious, and I ate it all, even the skin.
I hope to encounter this menu again someday.

Since the grand reopening, I have been visiting almost every year.
While the number of international staff has been increasing year by year, I am satisfied with the hospitality.
Not to mention the clean and comfortable facilities, the meals are good, but above all, the onsen is the best.

My husband and I stayed in the "Senshintei" annex.
We were overwhelmed by the room, which was lavishly spacious for just the two of us, and the vast, magnificent garden that couldn't fit into a single photo.
The facilities and service were meticulous down to every detail, overflowing with a welcoming spirit that made our stay extremely pleasant.

Above all, what deserves special mention is the onsen.
We have visited various onsen across Japan, but the onsen here is on another level.
I cannot express it well due to my limited vocabulary, but it is overwhelming.

We would definitely love to visit again in a different season.

I stayed here for the first time because of the good reviews. The service was very polite, and everyone greeted us with a smile, which felt great.
Overall, I am satisfied, but I would like to write down a few points that my companion and I noticed.

・Meals Although it was a private room, there was no call bell to order drinks, so we had no choice but to wait for food to be served or open the door and call out loudly, "Excuse me!" It would be even better if this could be improved. As for the portion size, it might feel a bit insufficient for younger people.

・In-house slippers There are many stairs, making them easy to trip on or slip off, so I think another type would be better.
(Many guests are elderly, so I think this would help prevent falls.)

・Room Overall it was clean, but there were several long female hairs on the floor inside the room. Also, if there were a TV near the bed, we could watch it while relaxing.

Since the service and the quality of the onsen were wonderful, we will visit again if we have the chance.

You also responded quickly to the air conditioning issue, allowing us to spend a very comfortable time.

This was the best stay of our Japan trip. Customer service was incredible, room was so peaceful and we did feel like we were staying in the middle of a forest. The resort amenities were cute, such as the game room and the library. They were able to accommodate our vegetarian diet and make a wonderful kaiseki meal for us (which even our young kids ate)! I wish we stayed for longer to actually enjoy all the amenities.

I had long wanted to stay at Matsuzakaya, which has a 360-year history in Hakone, and this time we stayed here to celebrate my husband's birthday. Since I had informed them in advance, I was deeply moved by their extremely attentive hospitality, such as a surprise in our room, a dessert plate, and a small gift upon our departure. Thank you as well for accommodating my dietary preferences. I relaxed and took my time soaking in the room's open-air bath while gazing at the trees in the garden. It was very healing.
The staff service was also very polite and pleasant. As a ryokan with rich history, I also learned a lot during our stay. I would definitely love to visit again.

While I had high expectations due to the good reviews and polite email communications, I was also a bit anxious until we actually stayed, since this trip was a birthday gift for my partner who loves onsen. However, it was a truly wonderful ryokan and we were completely satisfied. All the staff members provided polite service with non-stop smiles. The open-air onsen, private onsen, and room's open-air onsen were all amazing. Even though it was mid-July, being up in the mountains made it cool, and we were able to enjoy the onsen comfortably. We stayed in a room for 2-4 people. It was very spacious and comfortable. The beds were fluffy, allowing for a good night's sleep. Also, every dish for dinner and breakfast was wonderful, and even my partner, who has a discerning palate, praised it as delicious! I don't usually eat breakfast, so I wasn't very hungry and feel sorry for leaving some behind. The food was so delicious that I feel frustrated I couldn't finish it...!! You could tell they used high-quality ingredients. There were many international staff members, but I was surprised by how remarkably fluent their Japanese was. They seemed to coordinate well using earpieces, and I felt they had a solid system in place to respond to guests quickly. We didn't do any sightseeing and spent all our time at the ryokan from check-in to check-out, but it became the best memory. My partner was delighted too, and choosing this ryokan was truly the absolute best decision!

It was nice that the room was different from last time and had a slightly different atmosphere.

I was able to enjoy the onsen by taking a private open-air onsen before dinner, the large onsen after dinner, and a private open-air onsen before breakfast.
The retro atmosphere of the large bath was wonderful.

As for the meals, you accommodated my dietary preferences, and I was able to eat delicious food until I was full. Thank you very much.

The two of us are talking about coming back to stay next year, so we look forward to visiting you again.

As this is a historic old ryokan, I was a bit skeptical about the facilities and such, but it had been renovated and exceeded my expectations.

Although my room only had a shower, I was lucky enough to have the large bath all to myself. There were many foreign guests, so perhaps some avoided the large bath due to differences in customs...

Right after returning home, I immediately made a repeat booking for September.

I booked a non-refundable reservation before realizing I was pregnant, and ended up being 5 months pregnant by the time of our stay.
Since it was my first time traveling while pregnant, I was a little anxious, but the staff welcomed us so warmly, and I am truly grateful!

Thank you so much for your extremely attentive hospitality, such as preparing a body pillow in our room, modifying my meals, and switching my tea to barley tea.
Upon check-out, we were even given an amulet for safe childbirth from Hakone Shrine, which left me deeply moved.

This hotel was the best hotel I have ever stayed at. First of all, the hotel room was huge. I booked a room with a private garden and hot spring, and it was the best experience. It was nice to be able to soak whenever I wanted. Dinner was also amazing. Our waiter was so funny and nice, and the food was an immersive experience. I also appreciated the museum within the hotel. My only regret was not booking this for longer. I will definitely be returning next time I visit Japan! Thank you to everyone who works there for making this trip so special.

It is wonderful how the building has been comfortably renovated while preserving its historic atmosphere and charm.
The onsen felt so comforting to the body. Having walked the Old Hakone Highway that day, I was suffering from muscle soreness and fatigue, but after a good night's sleep, I felt completely refreshed. In particular, the room bath was filled with sulfur-scented steam in a cozy bathroom space, working like a natural sauna that completely revitalized me.
The food was flawless, and I ate everything right down to the final kamameshi (Pot-Cooked Rice). Breakfast made plentiful use of local ingredients and was an energizing menu.
Furthermore, the staff clearly valued heartfelt conversations and explanations, making this a ryokan where the concept of hospitality truly takes shape.

It had been a while since my last stay.
I love the quality of the onsen, and it was as amazing as ever.
From the welcome to the service and the explanation of the dishes, I felt high hospitality,

The meals were also extremely delicious,
and the drinks at dinner had changed to all-inclusive,
which made me even more satisfied.
We were given the leftover rice as rice balls for a night snack.

I travel to onsen all over Japan and stay about 40 nights a year, but even in comparison, the service and hospitality here were wonderful.
Alcohol was free in the lounge, but as someone who doesn't drink, it was a bit disappointing. Since the only cold non-alcoholic drinks were sweet juices, I ended up drinking water or putting ice in black tea to cool it down myself.
The onsen water is mildly alkaline, and I think it is one of the best onsen qualities in Hakone.

Matsuzakaya Honten is a truly wonderful and beautiful place that was a highlight of our trip to Japan. The whole property is stunning and our room was spacious and well appointed. The bed was also huge, a nice change from the small, city rooms. The food was wonderful. The fish, the vegetables, the meat, were perfect. The presentation was beautiful and the flavors were always great. Additionally, my wife does not like fish. They were so accommodating of her and made her some excellent substitutes. The onsens, both the one in our room and the private one, were a perfect way to relax after a few days in Tokyo. I would recommend Matsuzakaya Honten to anyone looking for an onsen experience Hakone. We stayed here for 2 nights during our trip to Japan for our honeymoon. From the outset the staff is amazing! They are welcoming and informative. Our room was amazing with the private onsen and they’d even left a sweet surprise for our honeymoon in the room.

Meals were delicious (a lot of food at both dinner and breakfast so make sure to show up hungry!). The chefs used many different flavors, and textures, everything was fresh and we left satisfied.

This is my second visit to this ryokan. My first visit was in February of this year, when I came with my older sister for the very first time. The hospitality, room, bath, and meals were all a perfect score in my book. In particular, the hot spring here is exceptional, filled with plenty of yunohana (mineral bath flowers). I truly think it is rare to find a hot spring of this high quality anywhere else. Because it was so wonderful, I returned this time to make sure my husband could experience it as well.

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by the same service staff member from our last visit. I was incredibly impressed that they remembered my previous stay with my sister, which gave a wonderful impression. The training of the employees is truly magnificent.

Although our room did not have a private hot spring this time, I personally prefer larger baths, so it was not a problem at all. It takes a short walk to get to the large public bath, but even that felt nice as it allowed us to fully savor the traditional atmosphere of Matsuzakaya Honten. The room and the entire facility were thoroughly cleaned down to every corner, allowing us to spend a highly pleasant time.

I was also completely satisfied with the meals and have nothing but praise, but what left a particularly strong impression on me was the opened and dried horse mackerel (Aji no Hiraki) served at breakfast. While it is a staple of a traditional Japanese ryokan breakfast, the one served here is uniquely different and exceptionally delicious. It is a wonderful thing that even a simple, non-flashy breakfast side dish is crafted so beautifully, making Matsuzakaya Honten an inn that truly makes me want to visit again.

Despite the heavy rain, the staff came out to welcome us. They even walked all the way to the parking lot and said, "Please use our umbrella." They were so kind and I was deeply moved.
Also, the check-in process in the lobby was wonderful. The welcome Japanese sweets and green tea were excellent.
The guidance to our room was also full of thoughtfulness, as they carried our suitcases and showed exceptional kindness at every single turn.
When we entered the room, we turned right down the hallway and found a tatami Japanese-style room. It was a bright room with large windows. While I was thinking to myself that this must be where they lay out the futons, they opened the sliding doors in the back. A bed appeared with a big impact. A candle art made of towels to celebrate the birthday was sparkling beautifully. I couldn't help but scream with joy. I was way too happy.
Furthermore, the dinner course meal was so voluminous that we could barely finish it. To my surprise, they made the leftover sea bream rice into rice balls and offered them to us, saying, "Please enjoy this as a midnight snack." I was astonished and so delighted.
From beginning to end, their thoughtfulness was truly wonderful.
The fact that we could utilize five different private rental onsen completely free of charge was also an incredibly generous and pleasant service. The quality was so exceptionally high that I even wondered if they were doing okay offering such premium service.
I have visited many hot spring resorts in Atami and Hakone before, but this inn has suddenly jumped to the absolute number one spot by a landslide. It is a warm, comforting inn that makes me feel like I absolutely want to visit again.

We held a celebration for my Koki (70th birthday). A total of three families—including my two children's families with young toddlers, and my wife and I—booked three rooms and stayed for one night. As a ryokan with historic architecture, we felt a deep sense of historical charm and were able to spend a great time together. I am glad that we were able to enjoy both the onsen in our room and the large public baths, and it seems our four grandchildren had a wonderful time as well.

However, because our dinner start time was late and the Kaiseki dinner menu featured many courses, it took a long time and lasted late into the evening. It seemed that having a meal that extended past 9:00 PM was tough for the toddlers, and some of the children fell asleep halfway through. While I understand the difficulty of meal preparation and serving, I would have appreciated a bit more consideration for the children.

I stayed here to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. We were generally satisfied with the room, onsen, and dining. However, there are three points of dissatisfaction. First, there was no lemon sour included in the all-inclusive drink options during dinner. I wondered why it was available for free at the bar but not at dinner. Second, the variety of yukata was limited. I thought it would be better if there were some brighter designs. Third, the onsen was far away and difficult to find. I would like the map of the inn to be easier to understand. However, about a month has passed since our stay, and my girlfriend and I are still talking about wanting to stay here again. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much for this time.

We had so much fun at this resort. It was so relaxing. The service was top notch and so far the best we’ve experienced in Japan. Our waiters were so personable and made our experience so much better. We LOVED the dinner service but thought the breakfast was a little “out there”. There were only a few things at breakfast that we really enjoyed. I love all the amenities that are included. Either it isn’t posted somewhere, or I missed it, but they have a free drink bar with specific hours, and meals were included. We also were able to get a massage and those were two of the best massages we’ve had! Overall 9.5/10!!

Excellent experience and magnificent rooms. Both Akebono, which had a superb and romantic private rotenburo in front of the bedroom window, and Tokiwa, which had a superlative corner view and a secluded private onsen outside. Service is also amazing. Exquisite Japanese Kaiseki-style breakfast were served, as well as dinners in the restaurant area, but breakfast quality in particular surprised us.

I felt that if there were options from a slightly more reasonable price range, we could enjoy them more along with other drinks. Since the pandemic settled down in the autumn of 2022, I started a journey to go around different 100% free-flowing onsen, beginning from the Tohoku region. I had stayed at this onsen inn twice about 30 years ago and had some complaints back then, but this time was completely different, and the level of quality had improved remarkably. Needless to say, the water quality of the Open-air Onsen in the room was exceptional. The staff's service, the silence and cleanliness of the inn, the fully equipped room amenities, and the morning and evening meals were flawless, ranking it as one of the top-class among all the 100% free-flowing onsen I have visited so far. No matter how many times I went to the large public Open-air Onsen, it was completely private, and I was able to monopolize the wide and deep bathtub. It appeared that about 80% of the guests were international travelers, which ironically worked in my favor. I have added this to my list of inns that I want to visit continuously from now on.

I was able to experience an extraordinary getaway in this historic building. The quality of the onsen was excellent; it relieved my stiffness and allowed me to sleep soundly. My wife and I stayed here for the first time at the end of April.
The hot springs, meals, and the historic building were just as wonderful as we had expected. It was a place we would love to visit again.
Since more than 80% of the guests seemed to be from overseas, I felt as if I were in another country during dinner (lol). Nevertheless, the staff provided excellent service, so we were able to spend a very pleasant time.

One disappointing thing was that there was no TV in the bedroom of the "Akebono" suite; I felt that even a small wall-mounted one would have been good. Another thing was that the tissues were quite coarse—it has been a long time since I encountered that quality.

Aside from those points, I am very satisfied. This is one of the inns I would definitely want to stay at again if I have the chance. Thank you for everything.

After staying for the first time last year, I was captivated by the hot springs with plenty of "yunohana" (mineral flowers), so I returned again this year. The hot springs are wonderful. However, it was a bit disappointing to find that the selection of drinks in the lounge and during dinner had decreased compared to last year, though I suppose it is unavoidable in this day and age. The staff were all polite and provided pleasant service. I look forward to visiting again next year.

My friend and I agree this is peak luxury when it comes to Ryokans and vacations in general. Our stay was amazing from start to finish with the highest level of customer care and attention. From the onset we were greeted warmly with tea and selected our Yukata's. The facility is sprawling but not overwhelming with relaxing free spaces to read, relax, and enjoy plentiful drinks (alcoholic and non) as well as snacks. But you may not need any snacks as breakfast and dinner are incredibly filling and plentiful! Each meal is made and served with such care and beauty- everything was almost to pretty to eat! They were sensitive to any dietary restrictions and had options for adding on where needed. The Onsens (private and public) were so well maintained and so incredibly relaxing. The location is further from the touristy area so you're truly away from the fray to relax in a quiet environment. That being said, bus access was very easy and nearby are a few beautiful hikes. My only regret was not staying another night to get another dip in the Onsen and experience another incredible meal. Thank you to Matsuzakaya Honten for one of the best getaways I've ever had!

The onsen was gentle as always. Among the many options in Hakone, I especially love the onsen at Matsuzakaya and the Odakyu Highland Hotel (which is currently under renovation). Dinner was a colorful menu that truly captured the essence of spring. I also sincerely appreciate the staff’s thoughtfulness in adjusting the meat portions for me and removing the onsen egg from my breakfast. Every staff member—both the new faces and the familiar ones—greeted me with a smile, making my stay very pleasant. I truly hope the unique hospitality of Matsuzakaya continues for years to come.

The senshintei suite offered an extremely relaxing atmosphere. Everything from the climate in the room, the feeling of the tatami mat floor, to the bed and the private outdoor onsen bath contributed. The accommodation and the natural environment allowed us to really leave our daily worries behind and switch off and relax.
In the mornings, we could observe birds in the garden while soaking in the onsen water, which was a blessing for the skin and has an excellent temperature.
In the evening, even a small Tankuki visited the garden.
The cuisine was also excellent, with several traditional courses with magnificent presentation and taste.
The staff was attentive, very friendly and spoke good english.
The Ryokan is easy to reach even with public transportation and it takes only a short bus ride to reach the marvelous lake Ashi.

Now that I am over 60 and have more time and financial flexibility, I decided to stay at Matsuzakaya Honten, a place I have wanted to visit at least once for a long time. It was even more wonderful than I expected, and I am very satisfied. First of all, I loved the atmosphere that allowed me to enjoy the excellent hot spring water in such beautiful facilities. I was completely satisfied with the Open-air Onsen in my room, the private open-air baths, and the large public bath. The quality of the meals and the service were also fantastic. The staffs were well-trained, and everyone provided truly wonderful hospitality. I would definitely like to stay here again. Thank you very much.

The onsen is free-flowing directly from the source and is truly wonderful. There was a bath in the room, so I could soak whenever I wanted. I enjoyed the three different types of water in the large public bath, and our whole family had a great time together in the private bath. I was very satisfied. Perhaps because the room we stayed in was old, the sound of the air conditioning and other noises were bothersome when we were trying to sleep. The service and hospitality were polite.

After finding a great deal during my stay in January, I made a reservation for March. Above all, the onsen is excellent. I have visited many hot springs, but being able to enjoy free-flowing onsen in the large public onsen, private onsen, and in-room onsen is truly satisfying.

Each room has its own unique atmosphere, and it is also enjoyable to choose which room to stay in next time. The all-inclusive drinks are a great benefit for those who enjoy alcohol, though I felt that a wider selection would be even better. Compared to other ryokan, the additional drinks available for order seemed a bit expensive.

Even so, overall I am very satisfied and would like to stay again.

We stayed for one night over a weekend in March at Shunpuso Tokiwa with my son, hoping to give my mother-in-law, who lives alone, a relaxing time.

The room was spacious, clean, and calming, and being a corner room surrounded by greenery made it especially wonderful. The indoor open-air onsen was a true luxury, and we could enjoy the mineral-rich water at any time.

The meals were excellent, beautifully presented, and enjoyable to the eye as well. We were able to relax and savor dinner for about two hours while enjoying the complimentary drinks.

We feel fortunate to have had this opportunity to stay at a special New Year appreciation plan.

The staff were warm and welcoming, making our stay very comfortable, and my mother-in-law was very pleased.

We would love to visit again together.

I was hesitant because of the “non-refundable” condition and almost lost my preferred dates, but I finally decided on another day and was able to visit successfully.

It was my first time in this room, which had been beautifully renovated. With windows on two sides overlooking the garden, the room felt very spacious and open, allowing me to fully enjoy the view.

The onsen, rich with mineral deposits, was wonderful as always. What made me happiest was becoming familiar with some of the staff, who warmly greeted me with, “We’re happy to see you again.” These interactions made the stay even more enjoyable.

The only minor disappointment was at dinner. I asked for sake to be warmed, but received it cold. When I requested it a second time, emphasizing “please warm it,” I was again served cold sake. The staff member was not Japanese, so I understand mistakes happen, but she has worked at Matsuzakaya for six years. I would have hoped that such a familiar staff member would understand and fulfill this simple request.

Even so, this did not diminish my enjoyment. I just returned, and I already want to visit again.

Great traditional ryokan experience. From the moment we arrived everything felt calm, welcoming, and beautifully authentic. The staff were incredibly attentive and made the whole stay feel special.

The facilities were excellent and the atmosphere throughout the ryokan was peaceful and relaxing. The baths were absolutely incredible and the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

If you want a true ryokan experience, this is a must-book. It’s definitely worth paying a little more than a normal hotel because the experience you get is completely unique and unforgettable.

The attentive and warm hospitality at Matsuzakaya allowed me to truly feel the essence of traditional Japanese hospitality. In short, this is a ryokan I would want to stay at again and again.

The rooms, onsen, and meals were excellent, and the gentle care throughout the stay made me feel refreshed both physically and mentally. Upon departure, the staff saw us off until we were out of sight, which reminded me of the graceful attentiveness taught by a master of ikebana.

Just before my pregnancy, I was thinking it would be nice to take a trip as a couple for one last special memory, when I happened to see this ryokan on TV and immediately made a reservation online.
I had informed them about my pregnancy due to dietary considerations, and they kindly prepared a body pillow in the bedroom and cushions for seating at meals, which was very helpful and thoughtful.

Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious, featuring locally sourced ingredients and carefully designed with health in mind. The seasoning was kept minimal, allowing us to truly savor the natural flavors of each ingredient.

The onsen was, needless to say, exceptional. The temperature was perfect, and it felt so blissful that I used both the large public onsen and the private open-air onsen twice. It was also very convenient that bath towels were provided, so there was no need to bring them each time.

The building preserved its traditional charm while being beautifully maintained, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The greenery throughout the property was also a pleasant visual touch.

The staff provided wonderful service, making our stay very pleasant. The complimentary drinks were also excellent, and I was especially impressed by the milk served in the morning.

It was truly a memorable stay that made me want to return with my family once things settle down. Thank you very much for everything.

What people value when choosing a ryokan differs, but this place is excellent in every aspect, including the onsen quality, rooms, cuisine, and hospitality. I have stayed here several times, and each visit has always been filled with wonderful memories. The subtle fragrance of Shoyeido incense throughout the property is soothing from the moment you arrive. The onsen is rich, yet I have never experienced any discomfort from it, which means it suits my skin perfectly. They also accommodated my dietary dislikes by providing alternatives.

As I enjoy antiques, I also take pleasure in appreciating the space visually. With the onsen, the reading I had been saving, and the delicious meals, it became the perfect weekend retreat.
If I may add one request, it would be nice to see some variation in the breakfast. It is very delicious with plenty of local ingredients, though. The time and space at Matsuzakaya are truly a worthwhile investment. I will visit again to relax.

Overall, the property has high potential, and there were hardly any complaints.

The bath itself is not particularly large, but I think it is above average for Hakone.
Dinner was good, but breakfast might benefit from a bit more creativity.

Just after the steep switchback hill familiar from the Hakone Ekiden ends, as you head toward the highest point of National Route 1, Ashinoyu appears to float at the very top, separated by clouds, in the Hakone Seven Onsens map from the Edo period.

Nowadays, it’s not inconvenient if you have a car, but from the moment I stepped into the inn at 3 PM until 11 AM the next day, I felt as if I were in a world above the clouds.

The building, facilities, furniture, rooms, meals, onsen, and hospitality—all of them—were never ostentatious, yet I could fully enjoy their supreme quality and relax completely.

Every onsen, filled with abundant yu-no-hana (mineral deposits from the spring), flowed continuously, and the meals were outstanding. I was impressed that authentic materials were used in every detail. The sake tasting set came in three tiers, and the premium class allowed me to taste three ultra-rare, top-grade sake varieties, which was extremely satisfying. This combination in a tasting set is truly on a level that seems impossible elsewhere.

Thanks to the special New Year sale, I was able to stay at this inn for the first time. Since it’s a utopia, I might never get the chance to go again—but I find myself gently lingering on the memory, wishing I could return.

As a suggestion, it would be nice if the website included a floor plan of the inn so that the room layout could be understood in advance.

The tradition, the onsen, and the staff were all excellent. Every time, interacting with the young and energetic staff members gave us real energy. Even though people say “these days…,” it is amazing that such wonderful staff exist.

While the quality of service in many ryokans seems to decline year by year, this inn and those in Kitagawa Onsen remain precious. I hope you continue to cherish this tradition and maintain a standard that never disappoints.

The onsen had plenty of water, and the unique spring quality felt almost like applying lotion. My skin became smooth and hydrated without needing soap. There was much more snow than expected, and the heavy snowfall in the morning completely covered the surroundings, creating an excellent atmosphere. Some areas were not cleared in time, but the staff worked hard.

Inside the room, only air conditioning was available, and there was no humidifier. I also felt that more historical information about the inn could be provided throughout the building. The architecture is traditionally Japanese, yet the hospitality felt similar to that of an overseas hotel.

We visited during the cold season, and a warm kotatsu was prepared in the room, which was very appreciated. The room had a living area and a bedroom with twin beds, which were very large and comfortable. The refrigerator had several complimentary drinks, and there was a coffee maker, so simply spending time in the room was enjoyable.

The meals combined taste and elegance, and the dishes were carefully selected. We were satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. Inclusive drinks were also available, and juices were provided after using the onsen.

We also used the private onsen, and the large onsen was spacious, allowing us to spend a relaxing time.

We stayed in the Himeshara room for one night (02/06–02/07), and we just wanted to say thank you for such a wonderful experience.

From the moment we arrived, everyone was so kind and welcoming. The staff made us feel very comfortable, and we really appreciated the warm and thoughtful service throughout our stay.

The Himeshara room was beautiful and very peaceful. It was clean, cozy, and had such a relaxing atmosphere. We loved the traditional style and all the small details in the room. It was the perfect place to rest and enjoy our time.

The onsen was amazing. It was so relaxing, and we felt completely refreshed after using it. Spending time there was one of the best parts of our trip.

Dinner and breakfast were also excellent. Every dish was beautifully prepared and delicious. We could see how much care and effort went into each meal, and it made the experience even more special.

If we may share one small suggestion, it would be about the dinner/breakfast time options. There were only two available time slots to choose from. It would be even better if guests could choose dinner times more freely in 30-minute intervals.

It was my first time staying in the “Kumoi” room, and it was wonderful. The corner room had two spaces, a spacious washroom, and the air conditioning worked perfectly throughout, making it very comfortable.

The onsen was a half open-air onsen-style hinoki tub without window glass, with plenty of water at the right temperature. It is sized for one person, so it may not be suitable for families who want to bathe together, but for us, each of us could relax individually and we lost count of how many times we enjoyed it.

The overseas staff members explained the meals carefully and sincerely, which made us feel warm every time.

The room only had a shower, but this was not inconvenient at all since we used the large onsen and open-air onsen. Even if the room had an open-air onsen, we might not have used it because the large onsen and private open-air onsen were so wonderful.

The staff, whether attending to meals or cleaning the inn, served with smiles and made us feel very comfortable. The foreign staff members were likely all highly skilled, speaking both Japanese and English fluently, which was impressive. The Japanese staff were mostly young, eager, and energetic, which was encouraging.

The next day was my husband’s birthday, which we had not mentioned to the inn, but they wrote “Happy Birthday” in chocolate on the dessert plate at the end of dinner. My husband was very happy.

As for the meals, it is a matter of personal taste, but I personally found them enjoyable even if not perfect. Thank you. We would like to visit again next winter.

I had a very satisfying stay. The special plan was reasonably priced, and I had no complaints. We were allowed to check in early, and check-out at 11:00 AM allowed us to relax in the lobby with the all-inclusive service. The small entrance leading to the spacious lobby and public areas was very stylish and beautiful. The meals were elaborate and very satisfying. Above all, the staff’s polite but unobtrusive service made our stay extremely comfortable. Thank you.

We stayed here for my husband’s birthday. When we mentioned it in the reservation notes, three surprises were prepared for us. I stayed here for the first time last year and was impressed that everything about this ryokan was the best I had ever experienced. Because of that, I returned after a year. The onsen, meals, room, and staff service were all excellent… or so I would like to say, but there was one minor issue, so I rated it four stars.

When I went to the large onsen at 5:30 AM, a sign said “Cleaning in progress,” so I returned to my room without checking the schedule. However, when I looked at the guide in the room, it said the bath was available from 5:00 AM. I called the front desk and learned that the sign had simply been left out by mistake. The extra trip up and down so early in the morning was a bit tough. Mistakes happen, but I sincerely hope the staff take pride in the inn and ensure this does not happen again.

We stayed here for my partner’s birthday. We had visited a few years ago, and this time the meals were even more delicious, and it seemed there were more young staff members than before.

The next morning, the fire alarm outside our room went off, but it seems that steam from the indoor bath can sometimes cause a false alarm. I was impressed that this incident was shared with all staff, which reflected the high standards of the inn.

The “Ashibue” room is far from the dining area and lounge, and in winter the hallways are as cold as the outside temperature, so it may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues or elderly visitors. However, given the building’s 360-year history, the coldness also added to its charm.

One point for improvement would be the limited choice of soft drinks. It is appreciated that drinks are included, but the lounge juice was not 100% grape juice, and only three or four options, including oolong tea, were available during meals.

Even if prices were slightly higher, offering non-alcoholic cocktails or higher-quality juices included in the rate would make the stay even more satisfying.

I have stayed here more than 30 times, usually at least once a year. Even after the management changed, improvements have been made every year, making the experience even better. There are quite a few foreign staff members, but I appreciate their sincere and polite service. Their dedication seems to reflect the training and education provided. I am impressed by their hard work. I enjoyed both the large onsen and the room bath, as well as the room itself. The onsen and meals are excellent. I will visit again.
One note: the temperature was around minus 10 degrees Celsius at night, and it seemed there may have been some freezing in the drainage pipes. Near the washing area and bath in the large onsen, water accumulated in some spots. This was the first time I noticed it, and I hope it can be inspected.

Actually, I had to speak firmly to the person in charge. I ordered drinks and called several times, but they were not brought, and within an hour, the food was already served. Since we drink quite a lot, it would have been better if the staff had observed our pace and served accordingly. Of course, we did not only order all-inclusive drinks, and it would be a loss for the inn if they did not manage this properly. We did not intend to linger for a long time. It was a little disappointing that the dishes were served in a mechanical manner. The onsen, however, was excellent.

I am a fan of onsen trips, and this onsen, with its natural flowing water, is truly the best. The room’s open-air onsen was very comfortable, and there were also large onsens and private baths, allowing us to fully enjoy the hot springs, which was very satisfying. The room was also comfortable for relaxing, and the meals were delicious. The grated yam with barley rice for breakfast was excellent.
One point to note: the all-inclusive drinks at meals felt a little limited. It would be nice to have a few more options.

We stayed here for our parents’ 60th birthday celebration.
They were very pleased with the decorations prepared on the bed, the private dining with a dessert plate, and the ceremonial red vest (chanchanko) provided during dinner.
Above all, the room’s open-air onsen and the large onsen were excellent, allowing us to relax and relieve our daily fatigue.

Some points to note:

There were children running around on the floor above us, which was a bit noisy.

The toothpaste provided in the amenities was somewhat difficult to use.

Although the plan was all-inclusive, there were many paid menu items and some could not be taken into the room.

Considering this was a discounted plan, the overall quality at this price made us feel we would like to stay again. We appreciated all the thoughtful arrangements.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The establishment is old but very well maintained, and it is simply beautiful and fun to wander around. Our room was really spacious and I loved the decoration and the mix of modern and traditional. My favourite thing was the private outdoor onsen for our room - it was so relaxing to soak in the hot tub in the cold weather, we couldn’t get enough.
The staff are so friendly and warm, and they were so helpful for our requests.

However, we were concerned that the shower in the large onsen did not get warm enough in the morning, and that the fuel for the irori stove was empty, so we could not enjoy it during our stay.
We are looking forward to visiting again next time.

My family of three arrived here to relax after a week of sightseeing and the hustle and bustle or Osaka and Kyoto. We were greeted upon arrival and give. resort shoes (slides) that we would be using throughout our stay.

During the check-in process, we were given a choice of yukata to wear during our stay. We took off our regular city clothes and remained in the resort wear all throughout the stay.

This is not a modern hotel property, and the facility is not new, by any means. But it has been well maintained and has a lot of modern improvements: in-room bathrooms are large and super clean and modernized. Our room (Gyokoso) had a private Hinoki bath and an outdoor private onsen. The bedroom was large, as well as the indoor sitting area and a lovely outdoor viewing area. Great place to sit and ponder.

The onsen is filled with natural - and incredibly sulphuric water. The smell definitely takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s definitely alll natural.

I cannot say enough about the kind staff who took care of us during our stay. The kaiseki cuisine was elaborate and delicious, and those who attended to us were patient and friendly without being obsequious. Also of note: they were all either very pretty or very good looking, ha!

All in all, a well-preserved and exclusive resort in Hakone. You get a feel for the imperial-ness of times gone by and the attentive service you imagine at a place of this caliber.

We had a wonderful time in a beautiful building full of history. The meals were also very delicious. The historical aspects have been well preserved while incorporating modern renovations.

Many of the staff were not Japanese, but all spoke Japanese very well and were full of hospitality, which was impressive. The Japanese staff were, of course, excellent as well.

A minor disappointment was that there seemed to be two women who appeared to be the proprietors, but they gave the impression of “just being there.” Perhaps this is fine, but at other inns of a similar price range, we have had a bit more interaction with the proprietors. The baby bed was also not ideal.

Overall, however, we were very satisfied. We are glad we stayed at this inn.

We chose Matsuzakaya Honten to celebrate my retirement, and the stay far exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we stepped into the building, the historic and elegant atmosphere combined with the warm hospitality of the staff made us feel completely at ease.

The open-air onsen in our room was exceptional, allowing us to enjoy the famous onsen at any time in complete privacy, which was a true luxury. Each dish was carefully prepared, pleasing both the eyes and the palate, creating a truly blissful experience.

We were also able to feel the excitement of the Hakone Ekiden, fully enjoying the unique atmosphere of Hakone. The farewell with “Have a good trip” made us think, “We will definitely return.” This was truly an outstanding ryokan.

Although there are some steps inside the historic building, the onsen was wonderful, and we were able to spend a relaxing New Year. We were very satisfied that the environment allowed us to enjoy the Ekiden even after checking out.

We had a wonderful, deeply relaxing stay at this property, which offered a truly authentic experience. The service was thoughtful, and the staff were absolutely stellar. We loved having a private pool, though the public pools also looked excellent—just note that the water is very warm. The food was a bit too traditional for my personal taste, but anyone who loves Japanese cuisine will be delighted. Also, there’s no need to pack much clothing, as traditional outfits are provided (although it's chilly in some of the public spaces in winter). Highly recommended.

Our Complete Ryokan Experience (Standard Plan) at Matsuzakaya Honten was absolutely flawless from start to finish. Every detail was thoughtfully curated and executed to perfection.
The kaiseki dinner was exceptional—beautifully presented, seasonal, and deeply satisfying, followed by an equally memorable traditional Japanese breakfast that balanced elegance and comfort. The private onsen experience was serene and luxurious, offering complete relaxation in a peaceful setting.
Service throughout the stay was warm, attentive, and refined, making us feel genuinely cared for at every moment. The atmosphere, food, onsen, and hospitality all came together for an authentic and unforgettable ryokan stay.
Simply put: everything was five stars. An outstanding experience we would wholeheartedly recommend.

I gifted an onsen trip for my mother’s birthday, and we were able to spend a very meaningful and heartwarming time. Dinner was prepared in a private room included in the package, offering a calm atmosphere reminiscent of dining in the room and a sense of special occasion, which we greatly enjoyed. For breakfast, we changed the setting to a Horigotatsu-style seat, allowing us to enjoy the morning sun while eating, creating a wonderful memory.

In recent years, many onsen inns have foreign staff, but this time we were assisted by experienced staff. My mother said, “Somehow, it feels very comforting.” Although I forgot their name, they were friendly, calm, and attentive, allowing us to spend the entire time in a relaxed atmosphere. We are deeply grateful.

One small request: For foreign guests, it would be helpful to provide more detailed instructions in multiple languages on how to use the onsen. We observed some situations that could inconvenience others, such as speaking loudly or entering the onsen with shoes. We would greatly appreciate your consideration.

My husband and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary. This was our second stay, and because we had informed the staff in advance that it was a special occasion, we received thoughtful attention and enjoyed the highest level of hospitality. The indoor onsen was wonderful and provided complete relaxation for both body and mind. Both dinner and breakfast highlighted the natural flavors of the ingredients and were truly delicious. Such a beautiful retreat! We travelled from Tokyo by taking the Shinkansen to Odawara Station and arranged a pick-up and drop-off via the resort. The process was seamless and a lot easier than we anticipated.

Besides the resort being beautiful and tranquil, we cannot express how great the hospitality of the staff is especially during meal service.
The drinks bar open in the morning until 10 am was also one of our favorites. Reserving a private session on the outdoor onsen space is a must.

Matsuzakaya Honten is a beautiful ryokan in a secluded place in Hakone. The silence and solitude make for an excellent place to relax and unwind. Our room was minimal but spacious, great for decluttering the mind. A pair of sliding doors led to a private onsen with a little moss garden as a view.

Dinner and breakfast provided were well thought out, delicious, and seasonally adapted. It felt like we were experiencing Japanese fine dining. There was so much to see within the ryokan itself: different themed rooms that showcased culture, history, and games.

The public baths and private onsen were also available for reservations, which we, regrettably, did not have the time to experience during our short one-night stay. We definitely recommend staying at least two nights to experience the ryokan to the full.

My husband and I loved our stay here! It's a long bus/taxi ride from Odawara station (up to one hour) but well worth it for the peaceful atmosphere, beautiful rooms and excellent staff! We splurged for a spacious room with a private onsen bath and I'm so glad we did. We felt so taken care of from the moment we walked in the door, it was a really relaxing experience and I highly recommend this place. Special shout out to Nono who was our server for both dinners, she is so friendly and kind!

We stayed in the Ashikari-so room with an open-air onsen.
The room was clean, well organized, and very comfortable.
Both dinner and breakfast were delicious.

During check-in, we mentioned that we were visiting for our wedding anniversary, and it seems you remembered. At dinner, a dessert plate arrived with “Happy Wedding Anniversary” written in chocolate on a large plate. I was deeply moved. It was the first time I felt that way since our child’s team qualified for the Spring Koshien tournament.

Every staff member provided such courteous service, and we were able to enjoy a very pleasant stay.

We stayed in the Ashibue room for one night and wish we could stay longer! From check-in to checkout, everything was smooth and the staff were hospitable. We enjoyed the private onsen many times especially since it’s naturally always “on” (no need to manually fill it up / drain it each time). Dinner and breakfast were both delicious and well presented. The space in the room as well as the general premises are beautifully balanced between historic vibe and modern functionality.

I had the pleasure of staying at this amazing establishment. The breakfast and dinner was something I’ve never experienced and will never forget! The Kaiseki was fantastic and the service by Matsuda san and Yuki san (sorry might’ve misspelt) was exceptional and they were so attentive! The Onsen experience is something everyone should try here and it was so clean and th facilities were amazing. The room was spacious in the Tamakazura room and I really look forward to coming back in the future! Thank you!!

It was the best experience I had in years. Matsuzakaya Honten had a really nice onsen and a very friendly team. The room was clean and neat. Food was more like a fine dining.
I've been to many Japanese Ryokan, and by far, this one was the best for foreigners. Every team member could speak English. Also, food and drinks are very well westernized without losing the Japan tradition

We're a group of all 3 women and have anticipated "OMOTENASHI" when we made a reservation at Matsuzakaya Honten.
I have stayed over 40 Ryokans 'cause I love Japanese Ryokan travel so much.
Actually I recommended Matsuzakaya honten because I thought your rich heritage of time guaranteed OMOTENASHI.

But we puzzled first when we entered private bath, because there are just 2 set of towels.
After we made a call to staff, we got towel for 3 of us.

Then we puzzled again, when we entered dinner restaurant.
Female Staff lead us to one room but there were 2 people already eating dinner. All of us were startled and the female staff whispered into her ear set then we were taken into another room.

And we were very disappointed... That room had no view, we couldn't see staff or inside of restaurant, and most of all, there were just 2 set of dinner seat.

We had complained about room condition to staff who was busy to make a seat for 3 person.
Fortunately, Shimizu(清水) Shion (I hope that I don't misspelled) was there, she was the one who introduce Ryokan at first, and she made everything perfect.
She was so thoughtful and kind, apologized for dinner seat, and even offered (maybe from the Matsuzakaya honten) to provide the drinks we ordered for free.

But that's not the end.
In the small lounge,
1 water bottle was empty

next time
2 Hot coffee bottle was empty

That was the time we found out very heavy dust on the `White section` ceiling. But this time, we didn't comment any more.

In this travel, I was reminded once more that the human element is far more important than the physical facilities during travel.

My husband and I stayed at Matsuzakaya Honten for a night on our honeymoon and can't wait to comeback. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, seasonal, and thoughtfully selected. We were surprised by the historical items displayed throughout the ryokan, which made it feel a bit like we were staying in a museum (a feature, not a bug!). Amenities were plentiful and intentionally placed in our room and throughout the premises. Everything we could need was seemingly already anticipated. The other guests were also lovely, warm, and seemed to truly respect and appreciate the unique type of relaxation offered by staying at a ryokan. Next time, I hope we're able to spend more time than just one night. A weekend trip would be ideal. We had the best time!

I was fully satisfied with my stay. Among ryokans in a similar price range, this one ranks at the top. The attentiveness of the staff made the stay very pleasant. I stayed here for the first time through a friend’s recommendation. The room, meals, and the open-air onsen in the room were all excellent. The onsen, in particular, was the best I have ever experienced, and the faint scent of sulfur was delightful. It was a chilly day, and I was able to warm up from the core of my body. I was also surprised to see steam rising from the garden. It was a very satisfying and relaxing adult getaway. Of course, the best part was the hospitality of all the staff.

Thank you to all the staff of Matsuzakaya Honten. It was a wonderful experience beginning to end. Our room was spotless and comfortable, and the bath was amazing. My friend and I both have some dietary restrictions and the kitchen was able to accommodate these for both dinner and breakfast, with the meal being very fresh and delicious. I would happily come and stay here again, I wish I could have stayed longer.
