Matsuzakaya Honten is a beautiful ryokan in a secluded place in Hakone. The silence and solitude make for an excellent place to relax and unwind. Our room was minimal but spacious, great for decluttering the mind. A pair of sliding doors led to a private onsen with a little moss garden as a view.

Dinner and breakfast provided were well thought out, delicious, and seasonally adapted. It felt like we were experiencing Japanese fine dining. There was so much to see within the ryokan itself: different themed rooms that showcased culture, history, and games.

The public baths and private onsen were also available for reservations, which we, regrettably, did not have the time to experience during our short one-night stay. We definitely recommend staying at least two nights to experience the ryokan to the full.

My husband and I loved our stay here! It's a long bus/taxi ride from Odawara station (up to one hour) but well worth it for the peaceful atmosphere, beautiful rooms and excellent staff! We splurged for a spacious room with a private onsen bath and I'm so glad we did. We felt so taken care of from the moment we walked in the door, it was a really relaxing experience and I highly recommend this place. Special shout out to Nono who was our server for both dinners, she is so friendly and kind!

We stayed in the Ashikari-so room with an open-air onsen.
The room was clean, well organized, and very comfortable.
Both dinner and breakfast were delicious.

During check-in, we mentioned that we were visiting for our wedding anniversary, and it seems you remembered. At dinner, a dessert plate arrived with “Happy Wedding Anniversary” written in chocolate on a large plate. I was deeply moved. It was the first time I felt that way since our child’s team qualified for the Spring Koshien tournament.

Every staff member provided such courteous service, and we were able to enjoy a very pleasant stay.

We stayed in the Ashibue room for one night and wish we could stay longer! From check-in to checkout, everything was smooth and the staff were hospitable. We enjoyed the private onsen many times especially since it’s naturally always “on” (no need to manually fill it up / drain it each time). Dinner and breakfast were both delicious and well presented. The space in the room as well as the general premises are beautifully balanced between historic vibe and modern functionality.

I had the pleasure of staying at this amazing establishment. The breakfast and dinner was something I’ve never experienced and will never forget! We're a group of all 3 women and have anticipated "OMOTENASHI" when we made a reservation at Matsuzakaya Honten.
I have stayed over 40 Ryokans 'cause I love Japanese Ryokan travel so much.
Actually I recommended Matsuzakaya honten because I thought your rich heritage of time guaranteed OMOTENASHI.

But we puzzled first when we entered private bath, because there are just 2 set of towels.
After we made a call to staff, we got towel for 3 of us.

Then we puzzled again, when we entered dinner restaurant.
Female Staff lead us to one room but there were 2 people already eating dinner. All of us were startled and the female staff whispered into her ear set then we were taken into another room.

And we were very disappointed... That room had no view, we couldn't see staff or inside of restaurant, and most of all, there were just 2 set of dinner seat.

We had complained about room condition to staff who was busy to make a seat for 3 person.
Fortunately, Shimizu(清水) Shion (I hope that I don't misspelled) was there, she was the one who introduce Ryokan at first, and she made everything perfect.
She was so thoughtful and kind, apologized for dinner seat, and even offered (maybe from the Matsuzakaya honten) to provide the drinks we ordered for free.

But that's not the end.
In the small lounge,
1 water bottle was empty

next time
2 Hot coffee bottle was empty

That was the time we found out very heavy dust on the `White section` ceiling. But this time, we didn't comment any more.

In this travel, I was reminded once more that the human element is far more important than the physical facilities during travel.

My husband and I stayed at Matsuzakaya Honten for a night on our honeymoon and can't wait to comeback. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, seasonal, and thoughtfully selected. We were surprised by the historical items displayed throughout the ryokan, which made it feel a bit like we were staying in a museum (a feature, not a bug!). Amenities were plentiful and intentionally placed in our room and throughout the premises. Everything we could need was seemingly already anticipated. The other guests were also lovely, warm, and seemed to truly respect and appreciate the unique type of relaxation offered by staying at a ryokan. Next time, I hope we're able to spend more time than just one night. A weekend trip would be ideal. We had the best time!

I stayed here for the first time through a friend’s recommendation. The room, meals, and the open-air onsen in the room were all excellent. The onsen, in particular, was the best I have ever experienced, and the faint scent of sulfur was delightful. It was a chilly day, and I was able to warm up from the core of my body. I was also surprised to see steam rising from the garden. It was a very satisfying and relaxing adult getaway. Of course, the best part was the hospitality of all the staff.

I would happily come and stay here again, I wish I could have stayed longer.

Truly wonderful spot. Were greeted by a friendly reception who got us settled in and explained the accommodation.

The communal areas were very nice! Tranquil areas to enjoy relaxed with a drink in hand (beer, sake, Shochu or tea etc) - all of which were inclusive of the package. Was a great bonus to have.

We had a beautiful tree just outside the room showing off its autumn leaves which really added to the aesthetic. Was really not much to fault in this place for the ryokan experience.

Amazing and unforgettable experience! From start to finish, the hospitality was truly 1000/10. We were greeted right at the door and welcomed with tea and a mochi dessert, which set the tone for an incredibly relaxing stay.

The staff and service were absolutely top-notch, going out of their way to make sure we were comfortable at every moment. The food was delicious, and exploring the traditional ryokan in our yukatas was such a unique and enjoyable experience.

Both the private and open-air onsens were wonderfully hot, and even the rain made the atmosphere feel magical. The game room and cozy lounge were lovely touches as well.

I genuinely love this ryokan and will definitely be returning for a longer stay next time!

Tucked just off the main road, this Ryokan is about an hour from Odawara Station. Check-in was seamless - despite arriving early, the staff graciously welcomed me with drinks in their lounge.

I stayed in the Matsukaze room, which was spacious and beautifully appointed. The autumn foliage outside my window - fiery reds and golds - was breathtaking.

The onsen experience was exceptional. The water felt restorative, and my skin noticeably benefited. Private onsen bookings are included, unlike many Rylan’s that charge extra - definitely a perk worth using.

Checkout was smooth and warm. Pro tip: book your taxis in advance as availability is limited.

One of the finest Ryokan stays I’ve had.

We had a lovely, restful stay. Our room was very spacious with a private onsen on the terrace. Lovely amenities in room. We also used the reservable private baths which were excellent and a highlight for us. The food was very enjoyable and we found everything to our tastes. Drinks available from 3-10pm in the lobby which my husband enjoyed. Staff were amazing, very friendly and approachable, often going out of way to help. I am studying Japanese and staff patiently spoke with me a lot which was kind. Location is slightly out of way but close to 2 bus stops. We found being away from cities part of the charm. Very authentic feel and 360 years old so lots of history.

Since retiring, I’ve stayed at various places, but this was my first time at this ryokan. The cost performance was very satisfying. As the title says, I made my next reservation during this stay. The onsen quality was excellent, and the meals were delicious.

It would be better if the amenities were of slightly higher quality.

Although I booked directly through the ryokan’s website without using a travel agency, I did not receive a confirmation email, which was a bit disappointing. I hope this can be addressed in the future.

In March, we took a trip with my mother and nephew to remember my father, who passed away suddenly. We were warmly welcomed by the smiling staff, and even though it was our first visit to this ryokan, we felt a sense of familiarity and warmth. The meals, rich in local vegetables and fish, were deeply flavorful, and for my mother, who is not fond of meat, alternative dishes were kindly provided, which was very helpful. We relaxed in the open-air onsen in our room and reminisced about my father in the large onsen, finding our hearts soothed in a peaceful time. The historical and beautiful exhibits in the ryokan created opportunities to meet other guests in the lounge, and through reflecting on my father’s hardworking life, I felt a profound connection to the present. Thanks to my nephew, who inherited my father’s meticulousness, we were able to enjoy smooth and efficient sightseeing throughout the trip. It was a very memorable journey. Thank you.

My companion was also pleased, saying that the fatigue from summer had melted away.
The bus on the way there was quite crowded, so we were a bit worried about the return trip, but a staff member kindly informed us that the Izu Hakone Bus tends to be less crowded than the Hakone Tozan Bus, which allowed us to return comfortably.

I recently stayed at this lovely hotel in Honkne, Japan, and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. The place is absolutely beautiful, blending traditional Japanese charm with all the modern amenities you could need. The hot springs were a highlight—peaceful, authentic, and just what I needed to unwind. What really stood out, though, was the service. Everything was spotless and smooth, but more importantly, the staff truly cared. I want to give a special thank you to Takahashi-san. Not only was he a great receptionist, but he also helped me through a situation I didn’t expect—handling a car accident that required a police report. He was incredibly patient, kind, and thorough. Thanks to him, what could’ve been a stressful ordeal was resolved quickly and calmly. I’m genuinely grateful for his help. This hotel is more than just a nice place to stay—it’s somewhere you feel supported and welcome. I’d love to come back again.

Thank you for welcoming us back after quite some time. It had been several years since our last visit, and we were pleasantly surprised to see that the large public onsen had been renovated. The previous one had a charming retro atmosphere, but the new changing area is much cleaner, and the larger lockers make it much more convenient to use. The water, as always, was absolutely perfect.

Our room was a spacious detached suite, and we were able to fully enjoy the beautiful, expansive garden. The beds, futons, and linens have all improved significantly since our last visit, which made for a very comfortable stay.

One small suggestion would be to have a stool in front of the double sinks in the washroom. Also, we were a bit surprised to find a large spider in our room on the morning of checkout. While we understand this is part of being in nature, perhaps providing a spider spray could help guests prevent such encounters. We also saw a large, thin spider next to the open-air onsen in the large bath. Some kind of countermeasure might be worth considering.

Ms. Nakayama, who served us during dinner, was especially attentive and kind, which we greatly appreciated. The meals have also improved considerably since our last stay. For Japanese guests of our generation, having a Japanese staff member assist us is often easier, especially when it comes to hearing clearly and making small requests.

One thing we found slightly disappointing was the limited breakfast time options, only 7:30 or 8:00. As we were asked at check-in, we reluctantly chose 8:00, but it felt a bit early for a relaxing onsen stay. However, we did notice that some foreign guests were starting breakfast at 8:30, which left us wondering. Considering the grade of our room, we would have appreciated a bit more flexibility.

That said, all of the staff were cheerful, polite, and made a very good impression.

This was me and my girlfriend's first time in Hakone and at Matsuzakaya Honten. It was amazing to say the least.

At the inn you feel incredibly taken care of and attended to. The customer service is amazing and they are there to ensure your questions are answered and needs are met.

Our only problem is that we weren't able to stay long enough!

When we first arrived we were greeted with warmth. The attendants thoroughly explained everything to us and showed us to our rooms. The rooms felt cozy, warm, and clean while maintaining the traditional charm that the inn is known for. You can feel the history of the place as you walk around the premise. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, giving you an idea of what a traditional Japanese meal is like. I have a fish allergy and emailed in advance to our booking, a bit worried that they might forget or that I would have to remind them. But upon sitting down they already knew and catered a specific menu that didn't vary to far from the original menus that would include fish. The onsens were amazing - both private ensuite and the onsen you can book for private use.

Getting to the inn is quite straight forward, taking a bus from the station and then a short walk. You feel truly secluded and away from everything.

Would definitely come back!

We were lucky to find a last-minute vacancy during a long weekend and made a sudden reservation.
We didn't do any sightseeing — just traveled from home to the inn and back — purely for the onsen.

The toilet and living room were on the second floor, while the bed was on the first floor, so moving around at night was difficult.
Also, there was a staircase along the corridor next to the room, and early in the morning, I believe it was a staff member running up the stairs. The noise echoed into the room, waking me up and making it hard to fall back asleep.

I was able to relax and refresh myself in the quiet and charming atmosphere, with furnishings that reflected a sense of history.
Many of the staff members were from overseas, but they were all very polite, seemed comfortable with Japanese, and left a great impression.

Also, since there are many stairs throughout the facility, I was a bit concerned that it might be difficult for elderly guests.

The open-air onsen in the room is the best. I want to try staying in other rooms, but I always end up choosing Ashibue.
It’s a luxury to be able to soak in the room’s open-air onsen until just before checkout.
Ashibue is close to the large onsen bath but a bit far from the lounge, so some people might find that inconvenient.
The water quality is excellent, and the large onsen bath is often not crowded, making it very comfortable.
If I had one request, it would be to have a shuttle service.

There were plenty of large yunohana (mineral deposits), and the strong sulfur scent really made me feel like I had come to a proper onsen.

Our family of three had the pleasure of staying at this wonderful inn. In addition to the rare onsen, the thoughtful attention provided by the staff made this an exceptionally pleasant trip, for which we are truly grateful.
Although there was a storm with strong winds and rain on the day of our arrival, we were warmly welcomed, starting with the staff who greeted us. During our stay, the staff continued to offer us kind and attentive service, for which we are very thankful.
Inside the inn, we felt completely at ease, a stark contrast to the harsh weather outside.

An old building is being beautifully used in a modern way.
The staff were very kind and polite, which left a good impression.
The room was also lovely, with a heavy, classic atmosphere that felt like stepping back into the Meiji era.
Both the private onsen and the indoor onsen had excellent water quality, which left my skin feeling very smooth.
The draft beer served as a complimentary drink after onsen was very tasty. I enjoyed it at a wonderful bar.
Both dinner and breakfast were healthy and delicious. I would love to visit again.

Since last year, my wife and I have been searching for a regular inn to stay at around the Kanto area.
In about a year and a half, we have visited around 90 places, but only about 10 of them are places we want to visit again.
I saw on YouTube and other sources that Matsuzakaya Honten in Hakone is a historic and renowned inn, so we decided to visit this time.
My impression after staying is that, as others have posted, it is a wonderful inn, but there were several points that did not seem to match its reputation as a prestigious inn, so I would like to mention some areas for improvement.
The biggest issue is that the cleaning was not thorough.
At first glance, it looked clean, but there were several cobwebs and dust in the sliding doors inside the room, and the windows throughout the inn were dirty.
I appreciate that the inn has been renovated over time while maintaining its long history.
However, if cleaning is not thorough, it ruins the dignity and reputation of the inn.
I was generally satisfied with dinner, but the breakfast did not seem to be prepared by the same chef.
Despite the labor shortage at inns everywhere, I was impressed by the attentiveness of the young and foreign staff to even small details.
The onsen was wonderful, and the atmosphere of the inn was excellent, but if the basic things are missing even in small ways, I don’t think guests who expect a true prestigious inn will return.
I would like to stay at the detached annex Senshintei next time, but if the above points are improved, I would like to continue using this inn as a regular lodging.
Lastly, it is not good to keep guests waiting in the lobby for a long time during check-in.
This indicates that the operation is not properly managed.
Since this is not a hotel with hundreds of rooms, guests coming from far away may quickly lose their expectations.
Although I have presented many criticisms, I hope they will be received as constructive feedback with hopes that this historically proud inn continues to be a true representative of Hakone.

I was satisfied with both the content and quantity of the meals, and appreciated the many local specialties offered.
Regarding drinks, I thought it would be nice to have some special options that lift the mood, such as sparkling wine.
Even if limited to one glass, having a special choice would be appreciated.
It would also be convenient if ice could be taken back to the room for drinks.
The onsen was good, but except for one spot in the large onsen, most areas were too hot to stay in for long, which was unfortunate.
Having small towels in addition to bath towels in the onsen area would be even more convenient.
If bath towels were placed within reach inside the bathroom, small towels might not be necessary.
I also felt a bit of stress when locking the room door, as it required moving the door back and forth slightly.
Given the excellent facilities overall, these small inconveniences were somewhat disappointing.

Both the private and large public baths were filled with "yu no hana" (mineral deposits), and the sulfur scent was just right. The quality of the onsen water was excellent, and the scenery and atmosphere of the baths were wonderful.
The quality and volume of the meals, both dinner and breakfast, were impeccable.
The building is rich with a sense of history, and the staff’s courteous service made it a memorable trip for us as a couple.

I was impressed that the historic building, dating back to the Edo period, has been preserved and renovated up to the present day.
On the way to the room, the explanations about the exhibits’ historical background and significance made the experience even more moving.
The onsen water, flowing directly from the source, was filled with countless "yu no hana" (mineral deposits), truly embodying an authentic onsen experience.
However, I was somewhat dissatisfied with the amenities, especially given that this is part of the Kinnotake Group.
I believe at least a bathrobe and razor should be provided.

Due to transportation issues, we had to cancel our original travel plans and ended up staying here at the last minute. I had visited over 15 years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by how beautifully the place has been renovated.
The service was courteous, and the warm hospitality made for a very satisfying stay.
Although our room only had a shower, we were able to enjoy the large public onsen, so it was not an issue. The room itself was spacious enough.
It was a bit disappointing that the bar was closed. It's a lovely space, so I hope it reopens in the future.

I had seen many reviews on YouTube about the rooms, the onsen, and the food, so I had done quite a bit of research before my stay. However, the hospitality of the staff far exceeded my expectations.
The view from the room, especially the garden, was designed to provide full privacy, allowing for a truly relaxing experience.
Although it was around 33°C in the town below, I was able to rest comfortably at the inn, listening to the sound of Odawara wind chimes through the screen door. I really felt like I was in a summer retreat.
Just one thing — I was a bit shocked to see that a last-minute discounted rate appeared on the official website after I had already paid.
That said, I’d love to come back again for a relaxing stay.

It was bright, quiet, and the time passed peacefully — it was perfect.
The scent of sulfur began to fill the room the moment I filled the hinoki bathtub, and the autumn leaves on the large tree outside were stunning.

I stayed here for my wedding anniversary with my wife.
The room was Ashikariso’s Yamaboushi.

The traditional atmosphere of the ryokan was very pleasant.
The open-air onsen in the room was excellent.
The food was delicious.
Since it was all-inclusive, we were satisfied being able to enjoy as much alcohol and juice as we liked.

Our favorite point, for both my wife and me, was the kindness of the staff.

Even with many international guests, the staff, including those from overseas, explained the meals carefully and greeted us with warm smiles. We were truly impressed not only by the ryokan itself but also by the wonderful staff.

This is definitely a ryokan we want to stay at again.

We stayed in the Tokiwa room for our wedding anniversary.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

Highlights:

The quality of the onsen water was excellent.

All the staff were very attentive.

The food was delicious.

The room and facility were thoroughly cleaned and comfortable.

Seasonal flowers and Tanabata decorations in the facility added a charming atmosphere.

There are three relaxing free drink spaces.

The view from the room was very nice.

The room has a double sink which is convenient.

The washing areas in both the private bath and the reserved bath are easy to use.

A few minor disappointments:

It would have been nice to have the option to order sparkling wine by the glass (even if paid) during dinner.

The hand-washing water in the room’s toilet ran for a long time, which was a bit confusing.

This is definitely an inn we would like to visit again.

This time, we stayed as a two-generation family for my grandchild’s onsen debut.
The smiles of the staff were wonderful and eased all the children’s anxieties.

Since this was our first stay after the renovation, we were surprised by how modern the rooms had become. However, we could still relax just as before, and we were impressed that the good parts had been preserved.

Everything—the service, consideration, staff, the inn’s atmosphere, room quality, amenities, spatial design, and the superb onsen quality—was perfect.
The breakfast composition was also good.

However, the disappointing part was the dinner’s seasoning, cooking skills, and overall content.
For an inn of this class, it did not meet expectations.
Even considering overseas tourists, it was not suitable.
Guests of this class from abroad are likely to have dined in places in Tokyo or Kyoto where the quality is higher. This dinner was equivalent to a level two classes lower.
Other than that, everything was five-star.

Only the dinner requires improvement and enhancement.
I sincerely hope this inn becomes even more wonderful.
This part was truly disappointing.
Nonetheless, I had a wonderful time and am grateful.

The hot springs, including the large public onsen and private open-air onsen, were enjoyed a total of four times. After bathing, we relaxed with free drinks while enjoying the garden view and felt the history of the hotel throughout the facility.

The quality of onsen and the private onsen were excellent—my skin felt so smooth, and I’d love to come back for that.

However, considering the room rate, I found the dinner somewhat lacking. At this price range, I expected high-quality ingredients and refined cooking that would offer a dining experience beyond the everyday. The tempura of sillago (kisu) was especially disappointing, as it was something you might find at a chain restaurant. While the sashimi was delicious, the garnishes included dried wakame, which was also a letdown.

Breakfast, on the other hand, was quite good, especially with the inclusion of grated yam (tororo).

Regarding the complimentary drinks at dinner, only orange juice, tomato juice, and oolong tea were available for non-alcoholic options. For guests who don’t drink alcohol, this felt a bit limiting for a place of this level.

The welcome drink and traditional Japanese confection (nerikiri) were both very good.

As for the amenities, the skincare products were from DHC, which was disappointing. These are commonly found in chain hotels and didn’t match the expectations for a luxury inn.

That said, the staff were all very pleasant and made the stay comfortable.

I splurged a bit as a reward to myself by staying at a high-end ryokan, and if the meals had been more enjoyable, I would certainly want to stay again.

Our stay at Matsuzakaya Honten was truly memorable. The setting is peaceful and picturesque, the staff were incredibly kind and attentive, and the onsen experience was both relaxing and rejuvenating. The rooms were immaculate and beautifully designed, blending traditional charm with modern comfort. Every part of the property reflects a rich sense of history and care.

As for the food, while there were some very good dishes that we enjoyed, the overall menu seems tailored to a very specific palate. Guests who are more adventurous with traditional Japanese cuisine will likely appreciate it more than we did.

Despite that, everything else about our experience was exceptional, and we would wholeheartedly recommend Matsuzakaya Honten to anyone looking for a serene and authentic ryokan stay.

We found this place through google reviews and did not know what to expect but it was amazing. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and gave off warm vibes and spa feeling. Service was top tier. We were a group of 6 adults plus one toddler and they were very accommodating. The food was great as well. We stayed for one night only but we will definitely return for a longer stay so that we can enjoy the facility better.

We can’t say enough good things about Matsuzakaya Honten. The hospitality here truly embodies "omotenashi". Every staff member we encountered was kind, warm, and incredibly attentive. Especially in the dining hall, where the service was exceptional.

The kaiseki meals were an unforgettable cultural and culinary experience. Our room had a private onsen, which was magical, and the private spa-style onsen rooms took it to another level of relaxation.

The lounging areas are peaceful and cozy, perfect for sipping complimentary drinks while enjoying views of the gardens. They even have a charming little "game room" filled with traditional Japanese games like Go, Origami, and Ayatori, which added a playful and nostalgic touch.

The inn may feel a bit old-fashioned if you're expecting ultra-modern luxury, but if you’re looking for a place that transports you back to 1662 (in the best way) this is it. It's a place full of soul, tradition, and thoughtful detail.

One small note: the kaiseki cuisine may be a bit adventurous for very picky eaters, but we found it to be a beautiful journey through Japanese seasonal ingredients.

Highly recommended for anyone seeking authenticity, serenity, and heartfelt hospitality.

Location not in proximity to main areas and may be unable to get taxi. Also as not in main areas, no dining options available to walk to outside hotel.
Misleading as private bath/ onsen is outside including shower and our first night was with rainstorm and cold so unable to utilize this shower. Only when able to transfer our concerns to someone who understood , did we learn we could use a private onsen with indoor shower however this was quite a distance away and still has to go outside to get there.

As always, the onsen was outstanding. The food, service, and room were all consistently high quality. If I were to mention something, it would be that the room was very close to the dining area, but I had to go down and back up the stairs, which was a bit inconvenient. In the past, you could go directly to the dining area from the room, so I hope this can be improved. Also, although I requested breakfast at 9:00 AM, I had to wait standing for 10 minutes even though I arrived slightly earlier. I would appreciate it if a bit more flexibility could be offered.

I read in a book by someone who believes, "If it’s not a free-flowing onsen, it’s not a real onsen," and decided to stay here to recover from a trip to Disney.
In short, it was perfect. The hot spring is already well known to be excellent (the best in Hakone), but what impressed me even more were the seasonal azaleas and greenery in the garden, the fresh flower arrangements throughout the inn, the lobby, the lounge, and the free drinks, all of which lifted my spirits.
The meals were thoughtfully prepared—nothing too flashy, but each dish reflected care and creativity. Enjoying them with sake was a moment of pure bliss.
Dessert came with a surprise birthday plate, which made me very happy.
Although I usually dislike natto, the handmade natto served at breakfast was perfect for beginners like me and made me want to give it another try.
The staff were also very considerate, making this a memorable stay for both my heart and my skin. I would love to return during a different season.

I chose the room at the very end of the corridor from the front desk. When I arrived, I thought it might be a bit difficult, but by the time I left, going up and down the stairs was no problem. I unintentionally got some exercise, and it was a satisfying combination of onsen and a workout.
The water dispenser in the changing room of the large bath provides hot water, which was very convenient for me since I don't drink cold water.
The meal portions were moderate, just right, and the seasoning was refined.
I was also impressed with the service. Watching the young staff work cheerfully and energetically lifted my spirits as well.

Our stay was very short (one night), but it was very relaxing and the staff took care of all of our needs.

My only request for improvement is on the cuisine. I’ve been to a few ryokans but I felt the food texture on most of the dishes was too “runny”.
Also, we’ve made a request for vegetarian guest, but it seemed the dinner menu for him was vegan.

Overall, I’d come back and enjoy a longer stay.

My fiancé and I had the most serene stay at Matsuzayaka Honten, and are longing to return here. From the moment we stepped foot into the ryokan to the time we left, we were provided excellent service and hospitality by the staff. We give our special thanks to Genki-san who ensured that our dinner, onsen and other arrangements were met, as well as to Yu-san who gave us a wonderful tour of the 363 year old ryokan. We were thrilled to be given this tour to learn more about the ryokan's history and artefacts, and feel honoured to know that we are guests amongst important Japanese writers, samurais and even members of the imperial family who have stayed here in the past. Despite its long history, the ryokan is well maintained and clean with beautiful zen aesthetics. The onsen experience was simply bliss and we were glad to have booked a private open air onsen at night and in the morning. We hope to come back to Matsuzayaka Honten and stay for more than 1 night on our next visit.

We really enjoyed our time here. They had beautiful facilities. There were some areas of the Ryokan that smelled a lot like smoke, including our non-smoking room. The "private onsen" was just a a bath that only fit 1 person, but you are able to book a private, large onsen for 150 yen. We loved the food - it was amazing and we left very full! Overall, very wonderful place to stay and we will come back!

We stayed in the resort for one night and we booked in advance through the hotel site. The staff was amazing and accommodating for the time of the booking until our final check out. All facilities and experiences were well taken care of. Overall it's an expreicne of a lifetime and the onsen by itself would worth it. However the meals and the room takes the experience to another level. An amazing place to finish your trip in Japan as you unwind from your journey around the country.

From the moment we arrived at the Onsen, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of unparalleled hospitality. The staff were not just friendly; they were genuinely warm and went above and beyond at every opportunity to ensure our comfort and enjoyment. Their attention to detail truly elevated our stay to a "next level" customer experience.

Our room was a haven of tranquility, culminating in the absolute luxury of a private onsen bath. Soaking in the mineral-rich waters in complete privacy after a day of exploring was pure bliss. The entire hotel exuded a sense of calm and refinement, making it the perfect escape.

One minor note for future guests, particularly those staying on the basement floor: while our experience was overwhelmingly positive, we could occasionally hear the footsteps and more energetic movements of guests in the rooms above. This was especially noticeable when they were walking heavily. It didn't significantly detract from our overall enjoyment, but light sleepers in basement rooms might want to bring earplugs just in case.

Despite this small caveat, the Onsen isn't just a place to stay; it's an experience in exceptional service and serene relaxation. We left feeling completely rejuvenated and already dreaming of our return.

Stayed here for two nights and it was absolutely fantastic. Staff attended to any and all needs, and were incredibly friendly throughout the visit. Bus from Odawara readily available and easily accessible. Private onsen was very nice and also readily available. Dinner's and breakfasts were highlights of the trip - traditional and delicious. We will absolutely be coming back.

What a great stay in this ryokan. We loved every minute of it and it was one of the highlights in our 4 weeks stay in Japan. The staff was amazing en really helpfull. The private onsen was a dream and the food was amazing! I will never forget this experience.

I stayed at Ashikari-so Himeshara this time.
The room had a calm atmosphere and was very clean. The private open-air onsen in the room was the best, and it helped me relax and relieve the fatigue from my daily life. The meals were delicious, and the staff was kind and attentive, making it a wonderful experience.
The amenities were well-stocked, and having plenty of bath towels available was very convenient. The only downside was that the water flow in the bathroom sink was poor, and when I turned on the water, it started to accumulate. Other than that, it was truly a wonderful place. I would love to visit again.

I stayed here for the first time in January this year and was so satisfied with the location, facilities, historic atmosphere, meals, and service. I wanted my family to experience all the wonderful aspects of this ryokan, so I brought them with me for a second stay. Just like the first time, I enjoyed not only the room, meals, and the natural onsen but also the exceptional hospitality and the thoughtful attention given to guests, which made my stay even more enjoyable. My family also loved it, and they were eager to return, which made me very happy as I planned this trip. We are not sure whether our next visit will be with the whole family or just as a couple, but we definitely plan to stay again. I look forward to that and will enjoy the anticipation day by day.
This ryokan, which I consider my favorite, has made my memories even more special. Thank you so much for the wonderful time and heartfelt hospitality. I look forward to seeing everyone again soon.

We loved the staff and the room and private onsen with our room. They did inform us though that there was no flexibility for gluten free so people allergies or intolerance be aware. They tried to be helpful but said everything had a little bit of soy sauce with gluten in it. We took the risk which left very upset stomachs. That is in us and would’ve been fine if…a big IF…the food was tasty. It was very strong flavors and with taking the risk to have some gluten we hoped it would’ve at least tasted delicious but they are strong strong flavors.

Again the ryokan and onsen are divine and the staff are wonderful. It is a very traditional Japanese ryokan and onsen and for better or worse traditional food with strong flavors and no food accommodation.

We loved the stay at Matsuzakaya Honten. From arrival to check-out, the experience could not have been any better. Our Rooms, including an indoor and outdoor bath, were gorgeous and we loved the touches the staff did for our honemoon. The public spaces were great to relax. We liked the mix of traditional and modern interieur. Dinner and breakfast were exceptional and the caring staff, especially Ms Yamagishi and Mr Shovan were kind and welcoming and made the experience one we will not forget. Thank you so much! We would love to visit again in the future.

Executive Hanare Annex for 4 people with Open-Air Onsen (Senshintei)

Came to this onsen for my partner's birthday and it was an amazing experience. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and got a surprise bday welcome in our room as well. Service was impeccable, rooms were spotless, food was exceptional and overall, we were highly impressed with our entire stay here.

We booked a room with indoor and outdoor tubs, but didn't realize there was also a separate outdoor private onsen that you could book outside in the main areas. That was a wonderful surprise and added to the whole experience, especially with the hot springs backdropped by the fresh snow.

Highly recommend the stay here and felt we were well looked after the entire time

When I was heading to the ryokan from the bus stop, the staff came running to greet me. During my stay, they provided the best service, maintaining the perfect balance of being attentive yet not intrusive. And, of course, the quality of the onsen water, with its natural flowing source, was amazing! I was relieved to find that it hasn’t changed since my last visit. I will definitely visit again. It’s been a while since my last stay, and I’m happy to see that renovations are progressing. The bath has been beautifully renovated, and the room was very comfortable, allowing me to relax fully. The meals were very healthy, and I could feel that the ingredients were carefully chosen. The staff were all warm and kind, making for a pleasant trip. As always, I believe the onsen’s water quality is the best in Hakone. As I get older, I would greatly appreciate it if handrails were added to the onsen in the future.

I was introduced to this place by a friend and visited for the first time. The traditional building, full of history, had been thoughtfully renovated to provide a comfortable atmosphere. The detached room was also wonderful. The meal, made with traditional Japanese ingredients, was very flavorful and delicious. I enjoyed the onsen, including the private onsen, public onsen, and the open-air onsen in the room. Most of all, the heartfelt hospitality from the staff made my birthday a wonderful memory.
