Our family had a lovely time at Matsuzakaya Honten, where we stayed for a couple of nights. The rooms are beautiful, the in-suite mineral spring tub/bath convenient, the staff attentive and friendly, and the hotel served as a great base for exploration of the Hakone area.

The senshintei suite offered an extremely relaxing atmosphere. Everything from the climate in the room, the feeling of the tatami mat floor, to the bed and the private outdoor onsen bath contributed. The accommodation and the natural environment allowed us to really leave our daily worries behind and switch off and relax.
In the mornings, we could observe birds in the garden while soaking in the onsen water, which was a blessing for the skin and has an excellent temperature.
In the evening, even a small Tankuki visited the garden.
The cuisine was also excellent, with several traditional courses with magnificent presentation and taste.
The staff was attentive, very friendly and spoke good english.
The Ryokan is easy to reach even with public transportation and it takes only a short bus ride to reach the marvelous lake Ashi.

Now that I am over 60 and have more time and financial flexibility, I decided to stay at Matsuzakaya Honten, a place I have wanted to visit at least once for a long time. It was even more wonderful than I expected, and I am very satisfied. First of all, I loved the atmosphere that allowed me to enjoy the excellent hot spring water in such beautiful facilities. I was completely satisfied with the Open-air Onsen in my room, the private open-air baths, and the large public bath. The quality of the meals and the service were also fantastic. The staffs were well-trained, and everyone provided truly wonderful hospitality. I would definitely like to stay here again. Thank you very much.

The onsen is free-flowing directly from the source and is truly wonderful. There was a bath in the room, so I could soak whenever I wanted. I enjoyed the three different types of water in the large public bath, and our whole family had a great time together in the private bath. I was very satisfied. Perhaps because the room we stayed in was old, the sound of the air conditioning and other noises were bothersome when we were trying to sleep. The service and hospitality were polite.

After finding a great deal during my stay in January, I made a reservation for March. Above all, the onsen is excellent. I have visited many hot springs, but being able to enjoy free-flowing onsen in the large public onsen, private onsen, and in-room onsen is truly satisfying.

Each room has its own unique atmosphere, and it is also enjoyable to choose which room to stay in next time. The all-inclusive drinks are a great benefit for those who enjoy alcohol, though I felt that a wider selection would be even better. Compared to other ryokan, the additional drinks available for order seemed a bit expensive.

Even so, overall I am very satisfied and would like to stay again.

We stayed for one night over a weekend in March at Shunpuso Tokiwa with my son, hoping to give my mother-in-law, who lives alone, a relaxing time.

The room was spacious, clean, and calming, and being a corner room surrounded by greenery made it especially wonderful. The indoor open-air onsen was a true luxury, and we could enjoy the mineral-rich water at any time.

The meals were excellent, beautifully presented, and enjoyable to the eye as well. We were able to relax and savor dinner for about two hours while enjoying the complimentary drinks.

We feel fortunate to have had this opportunity to stay at a special New Year appreciation plan.

The staff were warm and welcoming, making our stay very comfortable, and my mother-in-law was very pleased.

We would love to visit again together.

I was hesitant because of the “non-refundable” condition and almost lost my preferred dates, but I finally decided on another day and was able to visit successfully.

It was my first time in this room, which had been beautifully renovated. With windows on two sides overlooking the garden, the room felt very spacious and open, allowing me to fully enjoy the view.

The onsen, rich with mineral deposits, was wonderful as always. What made me happiest was becoming familiar with some of the staff, who warmly greeted me with, “We’re happy to see you again.” These interactions made the stay even more enjoyable.

The only minor disappointment was at dinner. I asked for sake to be warmed, but received it cold. When I requested it a second time, emphasizing “please warm it,” I was again served cold sake. The staff member was not Japanese, so I understand mistakes happen, but she has worked at Matsuzakaya for six years. I would have hoped that such a familiar staff member would understand and fulfill this simple request.

Even so, this did not diminish my enjoyment. I just returned, and I already want to visit again.

Great traditional ryokan experience. From the moment we arrived everything felt calm, welcoming, and beautifully authentic. The staff were incredibly attentive and made the whole stay feel special.

The facilities were excellent and the atmosphere throughout the ryokan was peaceful and relaxing. The baths were absolutely incredible and the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

If you want a true ryokan experience, this is a must-book. It’s definitely worth paying a little more than a normal hotel because the experience you get is completely unique and unforgettable.

The attentive and warm hospitality at Matsuzakaya allowed me to truly feel the essence of traditional Japanese hospitality. In short, this is a ryokan I would want to stay at again and again.

The rooms, onsen, and meals were excellent, and the gentle care throughout the stay made me feel refreshed both physically and mentally. Upon departure, the staff saw us off until we were out of sight, which reminded me of the graceful attentiveness taught by a master of ikebana.

Just before my pregnancy, I was thinking it would be nice to take a trip as a couple for one last special memory, when I happened to see this ryokan on TV and immediately made a reservation online.
I had informed them about my pregnancy due to dietary considerations, and they kindly prepared a body pillow in the bedroom and cushions for seating at meals, which was very helpful and thoughtful.

Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious, featuring locally sourced ingredients and carefully designed with health in mind. The seasoning was kept minimal, allowing us to truly savor the natural flavors of each ingredient.

The onsen was, needless to say, exceptional. The temperature was perfect, and it felt so blissful that I used both the large public onsen and the private open-air onsen twice. It was also very convenient that bath towels were provided, so there was no need to bring them each time.

The building preserved its traditional charm while being beautifully maintained, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The greenery throughout the property was also a pleasant visual touch.

The staff provided wonderful service, making our stay very pleasant. The complimentary drinks were also excellent, and I was especially impressed by the milk served in the morning.

It was truly a memorable stay that made me want to return with my family once things settle down. Thank you very much for everything.

What people value when choosing a ryokan differs, but this place is excellent in every aspect, including the onsen quality, rooms, cuisine, and hospitality. I have stayed here several times, and each visit has always been filled with wonderful memories. The subtle fragrance of Shoyeido incense throughout the property is soothing from the moment you arrive. The onsen is rich, yet I have never experienced any discomfort from it, which means it suits my skin perfectly. They also accommodated my dietary dislikes by providing alternatives.

As I enjoy antiques, I also take pleasure in appreciating the space visually. With the onsen, the reading I had been saving, and the delicious meals, it became the perfect weekend retreat.
If I may add one request, it would be nice to see some variation in the breakfast. It is very delicious with plenty of local ingredients, though. The time and space at Matsuzakaya are truly a worthwhile investment. I will visit again to relax.

I used the New Year discount promotion, and I was more satisfied than I had anticipated.
Overall, the property has high potential, and there were hardly any complaints.

I had expected the onsen to be a bit more milky in appearance, but there were plenty of mineral deposits in the water, so I was reasonably satisfied.
The bath itself is not particularly large, but I think it is above average for Hakone.
Dinner was good, but breakfast might benefit from a bit more creativity.

Just after the steep switchback hill familiar from the Hakone Ekiden ends, as you head toward the highest point of National Route 1, Ashinoyu appears to float at the very top, separated by clouds, in the Hakone Seven Onsens map from the Edo period.

Nowadays, it’s not inconvenient if you have a car, but from the moment I stepped into the inn at 3 PM until 11 AM the next day, I felt as if I were in a world above the clouds.

The building, facilities, furniture, rooms, meals, onsen, and hospitality—all of them—were never ostentatious, yet I could fully enjoy their supreme quality and relax completely.

Every onsen, filled with abundant yu-no-hana (mineral deposits from the spring), flowed continuously, and the meals were outstanding. I was impressed that authentic materials were used in every detail. The sake tasting set came in three tiers, and the premium class allowed me to taste three ultra-rare, top-grade sake varieties, which was extremely satisfying. This combination in a tasting set is truly on a level that seems impossible elsewhere.

Thanks to the special New Year sale, I was able to stay at this inn for the first time. Since it’s a utopia, I might never get the chance to go again—but I find myself gently lingering on the memory, wishing I could return.

As a suggestion, it would be nice if the website included a floor plan of the inn so that the room layout could be understood in advance.

This is our third stay.

The tradition, the onsen, and the staff were all excellent. Every time, interacting with the young and energetic staff members gave us real energy. Even though people say “these days…,” it is amazing that such wonderful staff exist.

While the quality of service in many ryokans seems to decline year by year, this inn and those in Kitagawa Onsen remain precious. I hope you continue to cherish this tradition and maintain a standard that never disappoints.

The onsen had plenty of water, and the unique spring quality felt almost like applying lotion. My skin became smooth and hydrated without needing soap. There was much more snow than expected, and the heavy snowfall in the morning completely covered the surroundings, creating an excellent atmosphere. Some areas were not cleared in time, but the staff worked hard.

Inside the room, only air conditioning was available, and there was no humidifier. I also felt that more historical information about the inn could be provided throughout the building. The architecture is traditionally Japanese, yet the hospitality felt similar to that of an overseas hotel.

We visited during the cold season, and a warm kotatsu was prepared in the room, which was very appreciated. The room had a living area and a bedroom with twin beds, which were very large and comfortable. The refrigerator had several complimentary drinks, and there was a coffee maker, so simply spending time in the room was enjoyable.

The meals combined taste and elegance, and the dishes were carefully selected. We were satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. Inclusive drinks were also available, and juices were provided after using the onsen.

We also used the private onsen, and the large onsen was spacious, allowing us to spend a relaxing time.

We stayed in the Himeshara room for one night (02/06–02/07), and we just wanted to say thank you for such a wonderful experience.

From the moment we arrived, everyone was so kind and welcoming. The staff made us feel very comfortable, and we really appreciated the warm and thoughtful service throughout our stay.

The Himeshara room was beautiful and very peaceful. It was clean, cozy, and had such a relaxing atmosphere. We loved the traditional style and all the small details in the room. It was the perfect place to rest and enjoy our time.

The onsen was amazing. It was so relaxing, and we felt completely refreshed after using it. Spending time there was one of the best parts of our trip.

Dinner and breakfast were also excellent. Every dish was beautifully prepared and delicious. We could see how much care and effort went into each meal, and it made the experience even more special.

If we may share one small suggestion, it would be about the dinner/breakfast time options. There were only two available time slots to choose from. It would be even better if guests could choose dinner times more freely in 30-minute intervals.

It may have been after a heavy snowfall, but the temperature difference in the passage from the onsen and the strong ventilation in the onsen made it cold inside. Additionally, it was very regrettable that a foreign guest mistakenly entered the women’s and men’s onsen.

It was my first time staying in the “Kumoi” room, and it was wonderful. The corner room had two spaces, a spacious washroom, and the air conditioning worked perfectly throughout, making it very comfortable.

The onsen was a half open-air onsen-style hinoki tub without window glass, with plenty of water at the right temperature. It is sized for one person, so it may not be suitable for families who want to bathe together, but for us, each of us could relax individually and we lost count of how many times we enjoyed it.

The overseas staff members explained the meals carefully and sincerely, which made us feel warm every time.

The room only had a shower, but this was not inconvenient at all since we used the large onsen and open-air onsen. Even if the room had an open-air onsen, we might not have used it because the large onsen and private open-air onsen were so wonderful.

The staff, whether attending to meals or cleaning the inn, served with smiles and made us feel very comfortable. The foreign staff members were likely all highly skilled, speaking both Japanese and English fluently, which was impressive. The Japanese staff were mostly young, eager, and energetic, which was encouraging.

The next day was my husband’s birthday, which we had not mentioned to the inn, but they wrote “Happy Birthday” in chocolate on the dessert plate at the end of dinner. My husband was very happy.

As for the meals, it is a matter of personal taste, but I personally found them enjoyable even if not perfect. Thank you. We would like to visit again next winter.

I had a very satisfying stay. The special plan was reasonably priced, and I had no complaints. We were allowed to check in early, and check-out at 11:00 AM allowed us to relax in the lobby with the all-inclusive service. The small entrance leading to the spacious lobby and public areas was very stylish and beautiful. The meals were elaborate and very satisfying. Above all, the staff’s polite but unobtrusive service made our stay extremely comfortable. Thank you.

We stayed here for my husband’s birthday. When we mentioned it in the reservation notes, three surprises were prepared for us. The first was in the room, the second during dessert at dinner, and the third at checkout. Both of us were very moved, and my husband was delighted that it became a memorable birthday. The room, meals, and service were all excellent. The onsen was especially wonderful—despite the sulfur scent, it left the skin feeling as soft and moisturized as after applying lotion.

I stayed here for the first time last year and was impressed that everything about this ryokan was the best I had ever experienced. Because of that, I returned after a year. The onsen, meals, room, and staff service were all excellent… or so I would like to say, but there was one minor issue, so I rated it four stars.

When I went to the large onsen at 5:30 AM, a sign said “Cleaning in progress,” so I returned to my room without checking the schedule. However, when I looked at the guide in the room, it said the bath was available from 5:00 AM. I called the front desk and learned that the sign had simply been left out by mistake. The extra trip up and down so early in the morning was a bit tough. Mistakes happen, but I sincerely hope the staff take pride in the inn and ensure this does not happen again.

We stayed here for my partner’s birthday. We had visited a few years ago, and this time the meals were even more delicious, and it seemed there were more young staff members than before.

The next morning, the fire alarm outside our room went off, but it seems that steam from the indoor bath can sometimes cause a false alarm. I was impressed that this incident was shared with all staff, which reflected the high standards of the inn.

The “Ashibue” room is far from the dining area and lounge, and in winter the hallways are as cold as the outside temperature, so it may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues or elderly visitors. However, given the building’s 360-year history, the coldness also added to its charm.

One point for improvement would be the limited choice of soft drinks. It is appreciated that drinks are included, but the lounge juice was not 100% grape juice, and only three or four options, including oolong tea, were available during meals.

Even if prices were slightly higher, offering non-alcoholic cocktails or higher-quality juices included in the rate would make the stay even more satisfying.

I have stayed here more than 30 times, usually at least once a year. Even after the management changed, improvements have been made every year, making the experience even better. There are quite a few foreign staff members, but I appreciate their sincere and polite service. Their dedication seems to reflect the training and education provided. I am impressed by their hard work. I enjoyed both the large onsen and the room bath, as well as the room itself. The onsen and meals are excellent. I will visit again.
One note: the temperature was around minus 10 degrees Celsius at night, and it seemed there may have been some freezing in the drainage pipes. Near the washing area and bath in the large onsen, water accumulated in some spots. This was the first time I noticed it, and I hope it can be inspected.

Actually, I had to speak firmly to the person in charge. I ordered drinks and called several times, but they were not brought, and within an hour, the food was already served. Since we drink quite a lot, it would have been better if the staff had observed our pace and served accordingly. Of course, we did not only order all-inclusive drinks, and it would be a loss for the inn if they did not manage this properly. We did not intend to linger for a long time. It was a little disappointing that the dishes were served in a mechanical manner. The onsen, however, was excellent.

I am a fan of onsen trips, and this onsen, with its natural flowing water, is truly the best. The room’s open-air onsen was very comfortable, and there were also large onsens and private baths, allowing us to fully enjoy the hot springs, which was very satisfying. The room was also comfortable for relaxing, and the meals were delicious. The grated yam with barley rice for breakfast was excellent.
One point to note: the all-inclusive drinks at meals felt a little limited. It would be nice to have a few more options.

We stayed here for our parents’ 60th birthday celebration.
They were very pleased with the decorations prepared on the bed, the private dining with a dessert plate, and the ceremonial red vest (chanchanko) provided during dinner.
Above all, the room’s open-air onsen and the large onsen were excellent, allowing us to relax and relieve our daily fatigue.

Some points to note:

There were children running around on the floor above us, which was a bit noisy.

The toothpaste provided in the amenities was somewhat difficult to use.

Although the plan was all-inclusive, there were many paid menu items and some could not be taken into the room.

Considering this was a discounted plan, the overall quality at this price made us feel we would like to stay again. We appreciated all the thoughtful arrangements.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The establishment is old but very well maintained, and it is simply beautiful and fun to wander around. Our room was really spacious and I loved the decoration and the mix of modern and traditional. My favourite thing was the private outdoor onsen for our room - it was so relaxing to soak in the hot tub in the cold weather, we couldn’t get enough.
The staff are so friendly and warm, and they were so helpful for our requests.

My family of three arrived here to relax after a week of sightseeing and the hustle and bustle or Osaka and Kyoto. We were greeted upon arrival and give. resort shoes (slides) that we would be using throughout our stay.

During the check-in process, we were given a choice of yukata to wear during our stay. We took off our regular city clothes and remained in the resort wear all throughout the stay.

This is not a modern hotel property, and the facility is not new, by any means. But it has been well maintained and has a lot of modern improvements: in-room bathrooms are large and super clean and modernized. Our room (Gyokoso) had a private Hinoki bath and an outdoor private onsen. The bedroom was large, as well as the indoor sitting area and a lovely outdoor viewing area. Great place to sit and ponder.

The onsen is filled with natural - and incredibly sulphuric water. The smell definitely takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s definitely alll natural.

I cannot say enough about the kind staff who took care of us during our stay. The kaiseki cuisine was elaborate and delicious, and those who attended to us were patient and friendly without being obsequious. Also of note: they were all either very pretty or very good looking, ha!

All in all, a well-preserved and exclusive resort in Hakone. You get a feel for the imperial-ness of times gone by and the attentive service you imagine at a place of this caliber.

We had a wonderful time in a beautiful building full of history. The meals were also very delicious. The historical aspects have been well preserved while incorporating modern renovations.

Many of the staff were not Japanese, but all spoke Japanese very well and were full of hospitality, which was impressive. The Japanese staff were, of course, excellent as well.

A minor disappointment was that there seemed to be two women who appeared to be the proprietors, but they gave the impression of “just being there.” Perhaps this is fine, but at other inns of a similar price range, we have had a bit more interaction with the proprietors. The baby bed was also not ideal.

Overall, however, we were very satisfied. We are glad we stayed at this inn.

We chose Matsuzakaya Honten to celebrate my retirement, and the stay far exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we stepped into the building, the historic and elegant atmosphere combined with the warm hospitality of the staff made us feel completely at ease.

The open-air onsen in our room was exceptional, allowing us to enjoy the famous onsen at any time in complete privacy, which was a true luxury. Each dish was carefully prepared, pleasing both the eyes and the palate, creating a truly blissful experience.

We were also able to feel the excitement of the Hakone Ekiden, fully enjoying the unique atmosphere of Hakone. The farewell with “Have a good trip” made us think, “We will definitely return.” This was truly an outstanding ryokan.

We had a wonderful, deeply relaxing stay at this property, which offered a truly authentic experience. The service was thoughtful, and the staff were absolutely stellar. We loved having a private pool, though the public pools also looked excellent—just note that the water is very warm. The food was a bit too traditional for my personal taste, but anyone who loves Japanese cuisine will be delighted. Also, there’s no need to pack much clothing, as traditional outfits are provided (although it's chilly in some of the public spaces in winter). Highly recommended.

Our Complete Ryokan Experience (Standard Plan) at Matsuzakaya Honten was absolutely flawless from start to finish. Every detail was thoughtfully curated and executed to perfection.
The kaiseki dinner was exceptional—beautifully presented, seasonal, and deeply satisfying, followed by an equally memorable traditional Japanese breakfast that balanced elegance and comfort. The private onsen experience was serene and luxurious, offering complete relaxation in a peaceful setting.
Service throughout the stay was warm, attentive, and refined, making us feel genuinely cared for at every moment. The atmosphere, food, onsen, and hospitality all came together for an authentic and unforgettable ryokan stay.
Simply put: everything was five stars. An outstanding experience we would wholeheartedly recommend.

I gifted an onsen trip for my mother’s birthday, and we were able to spend a very meaningful and heartwarming time. Dinner was prepared in a private room included in the package, offering a calm atmosphere reminiscent of dining in the room and a sense of special occasion, which we greatly enjoyed. For breakfast, we changed the setting to a Horigotatsu-style seat, allowing us to enjoy the morning sun while eating, creating a wonderful memory.

In recent years, many onsen inns have foreign staff, but this time we were assisted by experienced staff. My mother said, “Somehow, it feels very comforting.” Although I forgot their name, they were friendly, calm, and attentive, allowing us to spend the entire time in a relaxed atmosphere. We are deeply grateful.

One small request: For foreign guests, it would be helpful to provide more detailed instructions in multiple languages on how to use the onsen. We observed some situations that could inconvenience others, such as speaking loudly or entering the onsen with shoes. We would greatly appreciate your consideration.

My husband and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary. This was our second stay, and because we had informed the staff in advance that it was a special occasion, we received thoughtful attention and enjoyed the highest level of hospitality. The indoor onsen was wonderful and provided complete relaxation for both body and mind. Both dinner and breakfast highlighted the natural flavors of the ingredients and were truly delicious. Such a beautiful retreat! We travelled from Tokyo by taking the Shinkansen to Odawara Station and arranged a pick-up and drop-off via the resort. The process was seamless and a lot easier than we anticipated.

Besides the resort being beautiful and tranquil, we cannot express how great the hospitality of the staff is especially during meal service.
The drinks bar open in the morning until 10 am was also one of our favorites. Reserving a private session on the outdoor onsen space is a must.

Matsuzakaya Honten is a beautiful ryokan in a secluded place in Hakone. The silence and solitude make for an excellent place to relax and unwind. Our room was minimal but spacious, great for decluttering the mind. A pair of sliding doors led to a private onsen with a little moss garden as a view.

Dinner and breakfast provided were well thought out, delicious, and seasonally adapted. It felt like we were experiencing Japanese fine dining. There was so much to see within the ryokan itself: different themed rooms that showcased culture, history, and games.

The public baths and private onsen were also available for reservations, which we, regrettably, did not have the time to experience during our short one-night stay. We definitely recommend staying at least two nights to experience the ryokan to the full.

My husband and I loved our stay here! It's a long bus/taxi ride from Odawara station (up to one hour) but well worth it for the peaceful atmosphere, beautiful rooms and excellent staff! We splurged for a spacious room with a private onsen bath and I'm so glad we did. We felt so taken care of from the moment we walked in the door, it was a really relaxing experience and I highly recommend this place. Special shout out to Nono who was our server for both dinners, she is so friendly and kind!

The room was clean, well organized, and very comfortable.
Both dinner and breakfast were delicious.

During check-in, we mentioned that we were visiting for our wedding anniversary, and it seems you remembered. At dinner, a dessert plate arrived with “Happy Wedding Anniversary” written in chocolate on a large plate. I was deeply moved. It was the first time I felt that way since our child’s team qualified for the Spring Koshien tournament.

Every staff member provided such courteous service, and we were able to enjoy a very pleasant stay.

We stayed in the Ashibue room for one night and wish we could stay longer! From check-in to checkout, everything was smooth and the staff were hospitable. We enjoyed the private onsen many times especially since it’s naturally always “on” (no need to manually fill it up / drain it each time). Dinner and breakfast were both delicious and well presented. The space in the room as well as the general premises are beautifully balanced between historic vibe and modern functionality.

We're a group of all 3 women and have anticipated "OMOTENASHI" when we made a reservation at Matsuzakaya Honten.
I have stayed over 40 Ryokans 'cause I love Japanese Ryokan travel so much.
Actually I recommended Matsuzakaya honten because I thought your rich heritage of time guaranteed OMOTENASHI.

But we puzzled first when we entered private bath, because there are just 2 set of towels.
After we made a call to staff, we got towel for 3 of us.

Then we puzzled again, when we entered dinner restaurant.
Female Staff lead us to one room but there were 2 people already eating dinner. All of us were startled and the female staff whispered into her ear set then we were taken into another room.

And we were very disappointed... That room had no view, we couldn't see staff or inside of restaurant, and most of all, there were just 2 set of dinner seat.

We had complained about room condition to staff who was busy to make a seat for 3 person.
Fortunately, Shimizu(清水) Shion (I hope that I don't misspelled) was there, she was the one who introduce Ryokan at first, and she made everything perfect.
She was so thoughtful and kind, apologized for dinner seat, and even offered (maybe from the Matsuzakaya honten) to provide the drinks we ordered for free.

But that's not the end.
In the small lounge,
1 water bottle was empty

next time
2 Hot coffee bottle was empty

That was the time we found out very heavy dust on the `White section` ceiling. But this time, we didn't comment any more.

In this travel, I was reminded once more that the human element is far more important than the physical facilities during travel.

My husband and I stayed at Matsuzakaya Honten for a night on our honeymoon and can't wait to comeback. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, seasonal, and thoughtfully selected. We were surprised by the historical items displayed throughout the ryokan, which made it feel a bit like we were staying in a museum (a feature, not a bug!). Amenities were plentiful and intentionally placed in our room and throughout the premises. Everything we could need was seemingly already anticipated. The other guests were also lovely, warm, and seemed to truly respect and appreciate the unique type of relaxation offered by staying at a ryokan. Next time, I hope we're able to spend more time than just one night. A weekend trip would be ideal. We had the best time!

I stayed here for the first time through a friend’s recommendation. The room, meals, and the open-air onsen in the room were all excellent. The onsen, in particular, was the best I have ever experienced, and the faint scent of sulfur was delightful. It was a chilly day, and I was able to warm up from the core of my body. I was also surprised to see steam rising from the garden. It was a very satisfying and relaxing adult getaway. Of course, the best part was the hospitality of all the staff.

Truly wonderful spot. Were greeted by a friendly reception who got us settled in and explained the accommodation.

The communal areas were very nice! Tranquil areas to enjoy relaxed with a drink in hand (beer, sake, Shochu or tea etc) - all of which were inclusive of the package. Was a great bonus to have.

We had a beautiful tree just outside the room showing off its autumn leaves which really added to the aesthetic. Was really not much to fault in this place for the ryokan experience.

Amazing and unforgettable experience! From start to finish, the hospitality was truly 1000/10. We were greeted right at the door and welcomed with tea and a mochi dessert, which set the tone for an incredibly relaxing stay.

The staff and service were absolutely top-notch, going out of their way to make sure we were comfortable at every moment. The food was delicious, and exploring the traditional ryokan in our yukatas was such a unique and enjoyable experience.

Both the private and open-air onsens were wonderfully hot, and even the rain made the atmosphere feel magical. The game room and cozy lounge were lovely touches as well.

I genuinely love this ryokan and will definitely be returning for a longer stay next time!

Tucked just off the main road, this Ryokan is about an hour from Odawara Station. Check-in was seamless - despite arriving early, the staff graciously welcomed me with drinks in their lounge.

I stayed in the Matsukaze room, which was spacious and beautifully appointed. The autumn foliage outside my window - fiery reds and golds - was breathtaking.

The onsen experience was exceptional. The water felt restorative, and my skin noticeably benefited. Private onsen bookings are included, unlike many Rylan’s that charge extra - definitely a perk worth using.

Checkout was smooth and warm. Pro tip: book your taxis in advance as availability is limited.

We had a lovely, restful stay. Our room was very spacious with a private onsen on the terrace. Lovely amenities in room. We also used the reservable private baths which were excellent and a highlight for us. The food was very enjoyable and we found everything to our tastes. Drinks available from 3-10pm in the lobby which my husband enjoyed. Staff were amazing, very friendly and approachable, often going out of way to help. I am studying Japanese and staff patiently spoke with me a lot which was kind. Location is slightly out of way but close to 2 bus stops. We found being away from cities part of the charm. Very authentic feel and 360 years old so lots of history.

Since retiring, I’ve stayed at various places, but this was my first time at this ryokan. The cost performance was very satisfying. As the title says, I made my next reservation during this stay. The onsen quality was excellent, and the meals were delicious.

It would be better if the amenities were of slightly higher quality.

Although I booked directly through the ryokan’s website without using a travel agency, I did not receive a confirmation email, which was a bit disappointing. I hope this can be addressed in the future.

In March, we took a trip with my mother and nephew to remember my father, who passed away suddenly. We were warmly welcomed by the smiling staff, and even though it was our first visit to this ryokan, we felt a sense of familiarity and warmth. The meals, rich in local vegetables and fish, were deeply flavorful, and for my mother, who is not fond of meat, alternative dishes were kindly provided, which was very helpful. We relaxed in the open-air onsen in our room and reminisced about my father in the large onsen, finding our hearts soothed in a peaceful time. The historical and beautiful exhibits in the ryokan created opportunities to meet other guests in the lounge, and through reflecting on my father’s hardworking life, I felt a profound connection to the present. Thanks to my nephew, who inherited my father’s meticulousness, we were able to enjoy smooth and efficient sightseeing throughout the trip. It was a very memorable journey. Thank you.

Stayed 1 night but wished we were there longer. Peaceful setting in an historic building. The staff were professional, helpful & friendly. We booked the larger private onsen beneath the stars which was lovely and our room also had a smaller bath on our deck outside - also great. The set evening meal was delicious. The traditional breakfast was huge - I couldn’t finish it all but my son did! Would stay again

Everything from the meals, onsen, bedding, to the hospitality was excellent, and we were very satisfied.
My companion was also pleased, saying that the fatigue from summer had melted away.
The bus on the way there was quite crowded, so we were a bit worried about the return trip, but a staff member kindly informed us that the Izu Hakone Bus tends to be less crowded than the Hakone Tozan Bus, which allowed us to return comfortably.

I recently stayed at this lovely hotel in Honkne, Japan, and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. The place is absolutely beautiful, blending traditional Japanese charm with all the modern amenities you could need. The hot springs were a highlight—peaceful, authentic, and just what I needed to unwind. What really stood out, though, was the service. Everything was spotless and smooth, but more importantly, the staff truly cared. I want to give a special thank you to Takahashi-san. Not only was he a great receptionist, but he also helped me through a situation I didn’t expect—handling a car accident that required a police report. He was incredibly patient, kind, and thorough. Thanks to him, what could’ve been a stressful ordeal was resolved quickly and calmly. I’m genuinely grateful for his help. This hotel is more than just a nice place to stay—it’s somewhere you feel supported and welcome. I’d love to come back again.

We've stayed 2 nights in Matsuzakaya Honten and it was truely wonderful experience.
It's a peaceful and relaxing traditional Japanese architecture ryokan with excellent facilities, great staff that is always willing to help and above all here you can really try the tastes, sturctures, colors and presentation of traditional japanese cuisine.
I will definetly come back to Matsuzakaya Honten.

Thank you for welcoming us back after quite some time. It had been several years since our last visit, and we were pleasantly surprised to see that the large public onsen had been renovated. The previous one had a charming retro atmosphere, but the new changing area is much cleaner, and the larger lockers make it much more convenient to use. The water, as always, was absolutely perfect.

Our room was a spacious detached suite, and we were able to fully enjoy the beautiful, expansive garden. The beds, futons, and linens have all improved significantly since our last visit, which made for a very comfortable stay.

One small suggestion would be to have a stool in front of the double sinks in the washroom. Also, we were a bit surprised to find a large spider in our room on the morning of checkout. While we understand this is part of being in nature, perhaps providing a spider spray could help guests prevent such encounters. We also saw a large, thin spider next to the open-air onsen in the large bath. Some kind of countermeasure might be worth considering.

Ms. Nakayama, who served us during dinner, was especially attentive and kind, which we greatly appreciated. The meals have also improved considerably since our last stay. For Japanese guests of our generation, having a Japanese staff member assist us is often easier, especially when it comes to hearing clearly and making small requests.

One thing we found slightly disappointing was the limited breakfast time options, only 7:30 or 8:00. As we were asked at check-in, we reluctantly chose 8:00, but it felt a bit early for a relaxing onsen stay. However, we did notice that some foreign guests were starting breakfast at 8:30, which left us wondering. Considering the grade of our room, we would have appreciated a bit more flexibility.

That said, all of the staff were cheerful, polite, and made a very good impression.

This was me and my girlfriend's first time in Hakone and at Matsuzakaya Honten. It was amazing to say the least.

At the inn you feel incredibly taken care of and attended to. The customer service is amazing and they are there to ensure your questions are answered and needs are met.

Our only problem is that we weren't able to stay long enough!

When we first arrived we were greeted with warmth. The attendants thoroughly explained everything to us and showed us to our rooms. The rooms felt cozy, warm, and clean while maintaining the traditional charm that the inn is known for. You can feel the history of the place as you walk around the premise. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, giving you an idea of what a traditional Japanese meal is like. I have a fish allergy and emailed in advance to our booking, a bit worried that they might forget or that I would have to remind them. But upon sitting down they already knew and catered a specific menu that didn't vary to far from the original menus that would include fish. The onsens were amazing - both private ensuite and the onsen you can book for private use.

Getting to the inn is quite straight forward, taking a bus from the station and then a short walk. You feel truly secluded and away from everything.

Would definitely come back!

We were lucky to find a last-minute vacancy during a long weekend and made a sudden reservation.
We didn't do any sightseeing — just traveled from home to the inn and back — purely for the onsen.

The toilet and living room were on the second floor, while the bed was on the first floor, so moving around at night was difficult.
Also, there was a staircase along the corridor next to the room, and early in the morning, I believe it was a staff member running up the stairs. The noise echoed into the room, waking me up and making it hard to fall back asleep.

The meals, onsen, guest room, and service were all excellent, allowing us to spend a wonderful time.

I was able to relax and refresh myself in the quiet and charming atmosphere, with furnishings that reflected a sense of history.
Many of the staff members were from overseas, but they were all very polite, seemed comfortable with Japanese, and left a great impression.

I thought the garden could have been even better with a bit more maintenance.
Also, since there are many stairs throughout the facility, I was a bit concerned that it might be difficult for elderly guests.

The open-air onsen in the room is the best. I want to try staying in other rooms, but I always end up choosing Ashibue.
It’s a luxury to be able to soak in the room’s open-air onsen until just before checkout.
Ashibue is close to the large onsen bath but a bit far from the lounge, so some people might find that inconvenient.
The water quality is excellent, and the large onsen bath is often not crowded, making it very comfortable.
If I had one request, it would be to have a shuttle service.

Escaping the heat of Tokyo, I had a very pleasant stay at Hakone Matsuzakaya Honten. I’m truly grateful.

There were plenty of large yunohana (mineral deposits), and the strong sulfur scent really made me feel like I had come to a proper onsen.

We’ve experienced many different onsen, but the quality of the water here was the best.
The water was soft and felt very pleasant.

The food was also excellent.

This was our second time staying here as a couple.
Our first visit was six months ago, and both my wife and I had such a memorable experience at Matsuzakaya Honten that we decided to return.
We came to Hakone specifically to stay at Matsuzakaya Honten.
The dinner and breakfast were both excellent, and the tea and sweets served at check-in were also very delicious.
We were able to spend a truly pleasant time.

Our family of three had the pleasure of staying at this wonderful inn. In addition to the rare onsen, the thoughtful attention provided by the staff made this an exceptionally pleasant trip, for which we are truly grateful.
Although there was a storm with strong winds and rain on the day of our arrival, we were warmly welcomed, starting with the staff who greeted us. During our stay, the staff continued to offer us kind and attentive service, for which we are very thankful.
Inside the inn, we felt completely at ease, a stark contrast to the harsh weather outside.

An old building is being beautifully used in a modern way.
The staff were very kind and polite, which left a good impression.
The room was also lovely, with a heavy, classic atmosphere that felt like stepping back into the Meiji era.
Both the private onsen and the indoor onsen had excellent water quality, which left my skin feeling very smooth.
The draft beer served as a complimentary drink after onsen was very tasty. I enjoyed it at a wonderful bar.
Both dinner and breakfast were healthy and delicious. I would love to visit again.

Since last year, my wife and I have been searching for a regular inn to stay at around the Kanto area.
In about a year and a half, we have visited around 90 places, but only about 10 of them are places we want to visit again.
I saw on YouTube and other sources that Matsuzakaya Honten in Hakone is a historic and renowned inn, so we decided to visit this time.
My impression after staying is that, as others have posted, it is a wonderful inn, but there were several points that did not seem to match its reputation as a prestigious inn, so I would like to mention some areas for improvement.
The biggest issue is that the cleaning was not thorough.
At first glance, it looked clean, but there were several cobwebs and dust in the sliding doors inside the room, and the windows throughout the inn were dirty.
I appreciate that the inn has been renovated over time while maintaining its long history.
However, if cleaning is not thorough, it ruins the dignity and reputation of the inn.
I was generally satisfied with dinner, but the breakfast did not seem to be prepared by the same chef.
Despite the labor shortage at inns everywhere, I was impressed by the attentiveness of the young and foreign staff to even small details.
The onsen was wonderful, and the atmosphere of the inn was excellent, but if the basic things are missing even in small ways, I don’t think guests who expect a true prestigious inn will return.
I would like to stay at the detached annex Senshintei next time, but if the above points are improved, I would like to continue using this inn as a regular lodging.
Lastly, it is not good to keep guests waiting in the lobby for a long time during check-in.
This indicates that the operation is not properly managed.
Since this is not a hotel with hundreds of rooms, guests coming from far away may quickly lose their expectations.
Although I have presented many criticisms, I hope they will be received as constructive feedback with hopes that this historically proud inn continues to be a true representative of Hakone.

I was satisfied with both the content and quantity of the meals, and appreciated the many local specialties offered.
Regarding drinks, I thought it would be nice to have some special options that lift the mood, such as sparkling wine.
Even if limited to one glass, having a special choice would be appreciated.
It would also be convenient if ice could be taken back to the room for drinks.
The onsen was good, but except for one spot in the large onsen, most areas were too hot to stay in for long, which was unfortunate.
Having small towels in addition to bath towels in the onsen area would be even more convenient.
If bath towels were placed within reach inside the bathroom, small towels might not be necessary.
I also felt a bit of stress when locking the room door, as it required moving the door back and forth slightly.
Given the excellent facilities overall, these small inconveniences were somewhat disappointing.

Both the private and large public baths were filled with "yu no hana" (mineral deposits), and the sulfur scent was just right. The quality of the onsen water was excellent, and the scenery and atmosphere of the baths were wonderful.

The building is rich with a sense of history, and the staff’s courteous service made it a memorable trip for us as a couple.

I was impressed that the historic building, dating back to the Edo period, has been preserved and renovated up to the present day.
On the way to the room, the explanations about the exhibits’ historical background and significance made the experience even more moving.
The onsen water, flowing directly from the source, was filled with countless "yu no hana" (mineral deposits), truly embodying an authentic onsen experience.
However, I was somewhat dissatisfied with the amenities, especially given that this is part of the Kinnotake Group.
I believe at least a bathrobe and razor should be provided.

Due to transportation issues, we had to cancel our original travel plans and ended up staying here at the last minute. I had visited over 15 years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by how beautifully the place has been renovated.
The service was courteous, and the warm hospitality made for a very satisfying stay.
Although our room only had a shower, we were able to enjoy the large public onsen, so it was not an issue. The room itself was spacious enough.
It was a bit disappointing that the bar was closed. It's a lovely space, so I hope it reopens in the future.
