Had we realised that the earliest we could check-in was at 5pm, we would not stay here. Having travelled from Tokyo, we had planned to go easy the first day but ended up having to wander around town until check-in time. The hotel itself was well situated and comfortable, just a five minute walk from Hakone Yumoto station. There used to be an onsite restaurant but that has since closed.

It's a great stay with multiple supplies including entertainment and various amenities, making us satisfied and would like to choose it again. Sadly, due to water shortage in Hakone, we had limited time to take a shower and didn't have enough time to enjoy hot springs. Such a pity. The staff here is hospitalised and helpful and patient to offer help. We feel welcomed during the stay. It's not the traditional onsen hotel if you are looking for one( the big pool of onsen, outdoors kind and pure onsen water). But for people who want privacy and enjoy your own time, it might be a great choice for you.

We booked 3 rooms for family of 6 adults. Location ++++. Easy access to hakone tonzen train which is gateway to ropeway, lake Ashi , open air museum and “black egg “ valley & greysers…hot wooden tub in private rooms is neat although not a truly onsen experience…polite staff…bed is comfy & room is big enough for short gathering after outdoor attractions.

The room was beautiful and comfortable. Staff was accomodating and very helpful. The private onsen was fantastic, and we regret only that we could not stay longer. On-site restaurant was closed, so can’t really comment on the food.

Our stay at Zagakukan was a dream. My husband and I stayed for two nights and we wish it had been longer. We booked the room with the private rooftop Onsen and I can say it was a heavenly way to start and end each day. We enjoyed ourselves during the entirety of the stay. The staff was attentive, kind, and friendly. It was definitely the highlight of our entire Japan trip and if we are able to in the future, we would book here in a heartbeat. Loved it and thank you to the staff! It was a beautiful stay!

Such a stunning hotel! It feels both modern and traditional. The room itself is just amazing, I only regret that room with outdoor terrace was not available, but nonetheless, it was a perfect stay. It was our favorite hotel out of all the ones we stayed in over our 2 weeks vacation in Japan.

Nothing to fault with this hotel. Everything was great. Other reviews were faulting it being too dark but the room was very brightly lit and we had no problems at all. My only suggestion would be with such a quiet town (everything closes early), would be great if they offered a way to cast from phone/tablet to the screen for visitor to enjoy movie.

The room and open-air onsen were very clean, and I was able to stay while relaxing.
Shampoos at accommodations tend to leave my hair feeling rough, but the ones at Zagakukan made my hair smooth, which I really appreciated.
Also, having two bath towels per person was a great point.
The open-air onsen was on the rooftop, and I could adjust the temperature myself, so I was able to soak slowly and comfortably.
It was a very satisfying room.

We stayed for 2 nights, hotel appears a bit too dark and moody in the entrance and corridors but room was nice, although had a very confusing lighting set up that we hadn't figured out by the time we left. The rooftop onsen was good but looking a bit dated and had more of a Swedish spa feel than onsen with all the timber. Good location walking distance to main street and train station. Biggest downer for us was the 5pm check-in time, which despite being told our room was actually cleaned and ready we were not allowed to check in, so basically had to walk around waiting, which was bizarre because I would imagine most people would check out in the morning so the rooms are actually ready.

Was an amazing stay and experience that exceeded all of our expectations, the pictures don't do it justice. The ambience is so serene and feels like luxury right from the front door. The room was immaculate and large, with so many amenities provided. The private rooftop onsen was a highlight of our whole trip, it was incredible to be able to sit in the onsen and enjoy the night air or even the occasional bit of snow. The sushi restaurant attached was divine. Can't recommend enough.

We really enjoyed our stay at Zagakukan. The room was designed beautifully and felt very cosy and private. The tub was also quite large and deep which makes it great for soaking in the onsen water. The hotel provided all sorts of amenities which was so helpful! And the location was just a short walk from Hakone Yumoto train station, so it was close to lots of shops as well. We loved it and felt it was good value for the price!

Purpose of Stay
I stayed for the first time as the conclusion to my Tokyo trip.

Arrival
I checked in just before 11 PM, and when I arrived at the front desk, the staff immediately came to assist me, providing detailed instructions on where to park.

During the Stay
I wasn’t bothered by the noise from neighboring rooms or ambient sounds, and the view from the open-air onsen was perfect. I was fortunate with the weather — the stars were beautiful at night, and in the morning, the refreshing winter cold and the warm sunlight made it comfortable to enjoy sunbathing on the bed in front of the open-air onsen bath.

Amenities
At the front desk, there were amenities like toothbrushes, hair ties (rubber bands and clips), lip balm, and facial masks. In the room, I had 2L of water, two bags of drip coffee, and tea bags. There were two bath towels provided per person, one for use after showering in the room and the other for use after the rooftop outdoor bath. The room also had a television, and I could watch fairly recent movies.

Improvements
If I had to suggest an improvement, it would be the parking. While it’s about a 5-minute walk from the accommodation, the sloping hill made it quite challenging to walk up with a suitcase.

The service from the staff was excellent, and there was an outdoor onsen on the upper floor of the room, where I was able to enjoy the hot springs in a relaxed and peaceful setting.

More than expectation. Every detail of the design of the room were thought. High tech with smart TV and lighting controls. Fusion between modern Scandi meets Japan interior. The amenities were top notch. Words aren’t enough to describe how much we loved the space along the rooftop private bath. Wish we had booked a longer stay. Very quiet. Immaculate sound proofing.

My wife and I were here for a one night stay in Hakone as part of our Honeymoon in Japan. Our stay here was pretty amazing (we loved the happy honeymoon decoration that was provided!) other than 3 small comments.

1. Consider changing the fragrance used at the main walkway/lobby area. It’s a very odd rustic wood smell that both me and the wife didn’t find very pleasant.

2. Do consider having English interface option for your software installed in your smart television. We managed to get by using google translate but would have appreciated the option.

3. We had a few queries regarding the PPV programmes provided on the smart television. Unfortunately the front desk staff (we mainly dealt with the Indian staff as the Japanese staff was unable to speak much english) was not able to provide a definite answer to our query. Perhaps further English language training can be considered especially if trying to cater for a more international audience.

Excellent hotel and very central. Rooms were very well designed in a traditional style. Restaurant at the hotel was outstanding. The chef was very accommodating regarding food restrictions and we had two of the best meals in Japan!

The room and onsen are nice, but having a scenic rooftop instead of a completely enclosed space would enhance the experience.

The location is conveniently close to the train station.

However, I was very disappointed with the sushi restaurant that I wanted to ask for a refund. While the food quality was decent, the service was extremely slow. We waited for 25 minutes without being served because there was only one chef attending to another couple. We spent over two hours there, and the number of dishes was quite limited, leading us to fall asleep a few times. It took them 10 minutes to serve each sushi and 20 minutes just to prepare some fruit. Overall, it was a frustrating experience that felt like a significant waste of time. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend their sushi restaurant, but everything else was satisfactory.

The atmosphere was calm, and although the bathroom in the room was compact, we were able to enjoy the hot spring. The staff were from overseas but gave clear instructions in Japanese, which made us feel comfortable. The room’s facilities were modern and very comfortable. I would love to stay again.

Our room was a surprise! It was clean, bed very comfortable, quaint set up in the traditional Japanese Onsen style with modern facilities. We enjoyed the hot spring water soaking in the wooden bathtub.
This hotel is a walkable distance to the station- 5 mins with a medium suitcase. Customer service was excellent as they warmly greeted us despite turning up late for our check in time~9pm. We had a wonderful and relaxing stay even for a night.

Perhaps because the number of guests is limited, we were able to spend our time in a very peaceful environment. The room had a calming light, and we were able to relax and enjoy our time. However, due to the rain, the stairs leading to the rooftop outdoor bath and the sofas on the rooftop were wet. The footing was slippery, and there was no place to put our change of clothes. It would be greatly appreciated if a movable roof or some other solution could be provided for rainy days.

I found this inn while searching for rooms with outdoor baths, and it was even more wonderful than I imagined. The open-air onsen was spacious enough for two people to relax comfortably, and adjusting the temperature was easy with just one button, making it very pleasant. Both the open-air onsen and the room were very clean, and I could relax without my shoes on, making it perfect for a cozy stay. The access was also great, as it was just a short walk from the station. I definitely want to visit again.

I visited because I really like modern and calm atmospheres. The entire ryokan, the room, and the private open-air onsen were all even more beautiful than I imagined. With the checkout time being at noon, I was very satisfied to be able to relax in the onsen in the morning as well. The staff were all very warm and handled everything with care throughout my stay.

I was staying during a birthday trip, and it seems they noticed my birthday from the guest list and prepared a surprise gift, which greatly touched me. Thank you very much for the lovely gesture. I would definitely like to stay here again.
